Playing Trump like a fiddle, knowing his weakness for flattery and star power. Starmer begins by presenting a letter of invitation from Charles III.

What is really cringeworthy is that apparently Charles has been writing to Trump for the last four years

I hope so. I hope they’ve built up a ‘friendship’ which enables Charles to at least attempt to appeal to his better nature… if there is one at all.

BIossomtoes · 01/03/2025 19:02

It seems highly unlikely in light of how impressed Trump was with his letter from the King on Thursday.

Yes, it was a good meeting overall (well right until the meeting with Zelensky when the orange twat just kicked off) but isn't it sad that the only thing we can offer to the US is not an impressive technology or a lucrative trade deal but a pompous staged dinner?

No, because Trump already has money. The ultra rich have always been desperate to hobnob with Royalty as its the only privilege that money cannot buy.

Horses7 · 01/03/2025 20:09

I hope after Friday his invitation is cancelled.

It's going to be delayed when Charles isn't washing his hair. No date is ever attached to them for this reason.

sleepwouldbenice · 01/03/2025 20:13

Actually it was more than the state visit, it was being in Scotland to plan it, and KC showing an interest in that, rather like he's doing on Sunday

The state visit will only be special in Donald's head

I thought Starmer did a great job, AND it was embarrassing. Just the reality of being a small country with a big past and an uncertain future. But also the nature of diplomacy and democracy. If a major power votes for someone, however unpredictable, we've got to find some kind of connection.

@MsAmerica I wish I still felt the same about visiting America, we'd planned a big trip in 2026 but I just don't want to do it at the moment. Still love so much about the US in general though.

Go to Canada, I think they will welcome you with open arms.

That's a very interesting take.
But we could also say: All some places can offer is the nuts-and-bolts of deal-making, but the U.K. showcases the value of tradition, culture, and civility.

We really would love a trade deal but the USA doesn’t seem interested - America first trumps trade deals. More likely to have tariffs imposed!

We really aren't that desperate. And musk supports Tommy. Really don't bother

I despise Trump (and his sidekick Chump). I imagine will enjoy his carriage ride and the state toadying. Then he'll do the dirty on us. This might placate him today but I think all he's really interested in is the bottom line.

Completely agree with this he is a man who thrives in Chaos. Not playing on an even playing field or by the rules. Like many disrupters he wouldn’t be in seat if he actually had the rules applied he would be screwed so of course he doesn’t play by the rules and will do a U turn when it suits him.

I heard a joke that the King became an anti-monarchist after he signed the invitation letter 😂

TizerorFizz · 02/03/2025 09:20

The king has to act in our best interests. We don’t have anything else to offer. We would like to ensure our safety and peace as far as we can and we have hoops we need to go through. Might be distasteful but we cannot ignore the USA .

Jacquettes · 02/03/2025 05:12

Very unlikely since a letter Prince Charles, as he was sent a letter to DT in the 1990s and he was gong to publish it - against the Kings wishes as a private letter. He is therefore unlikely to have been sending letters to the very same person.

Whats more Trump tried desperately to woo Diana, the Kings late wife although DT rejects this claim. Diana was bombarded with floral gifts from Trump?

bombastix · 02/03/2025 12:27

Charles is known for his unusual correspondence- I can well believe he's been writing to Trump. He writes a lot of interesting letters.

Dervel · 02/03/2025 12:33

I think we need to tread very very carefully. Putin is the bigger danger than Trump. We need to fix relations with the EU, and ensure a security shield around. We all need Ukraine as much as they need us. In fact if anything as they are fighting they are keeping us safe and giving us time to plug NATO resource shortfalls.

I think this diplomatic deployment with our PM, King Charles is all we can do for the time being to try and lessen the impact, Macron played a blinder too with Trump. However these measures are only going to buy us time. We have to get our ducks in a row and learn to rely on America less and less.

I’m very sad to see it, as America was a nation founded on some solidly noble values, but in some ways it has become a victim of its own success, but a lot of those principles have become lost now or at best largely misunderstood.

it is a solemn and weighty thing to see liberty die in America, but those values are alive in the nation of Ukraine and Europe. That is where we must place our hopes and support in the immediate future.

I’m actually really glad it’s Starmer in charge at the moment, whatever you think about him at least he is measured in his responses and won’t go making any rash decisions and maybe he’ll be able to restore some sort of dialogue between Ukraine / US.

This is exactly what I think too.

Dervel · 02/03/2025 12:57

I’ve always liked Starmer, though I think he has an almost impossible job to do both domestically and abroad.

Me too - agree that a calm measured lawyerly approach is what we need. I also agree that his job is very very hard right now. Some of the media have acknowledged that, others haven't. People don't have to agree with his every move but they could admit there is no great solution to any major problem at the moment and give his approach a chance.
