They know we are broke

Why don’t they remember that we are broke? When this new government started, they warned us that there was no money and we would have to be frugal for a few years.
They said there was an undisclosed debt of £22bn. The Nhs needed several billions of pounds to improve.
The Chancellor said that we are so short of money that they needed to take the £200 Winter Fuel Allowance from pensioners to pay the railway workers.
Now they are going to give away the Chagos Islands along with at least £90m per annum as a present. They are considering paying over £2bn in reparations to IRA terrorists and gangsters, I think it is for hurt feelings.
Please try and convince your MP that they are wasting our money and they should get a grip on the problems and work out how to encourage growth in the economy.

Oh dear. Dont believe politicians. They have no idea about growth! So asking for it is a waste of time.

CharlestheBold · 11/02/2025 15:29

@TizerorFizz Yes but they have made growth a priority have they not?
It may be the topic that hangs them.

@CharlestheBold Sayjng something and doing it are two different things. The rhetoric is a hook. The actual economic policy is what will matter. Higher taxation on business will not produce growth. The debt was partly of their own making and interest on our borrowing is now significantly worse. The black hole is substantially bigger! So its cuts or more tax. More tax never grows the economy. Growth forecasts have just been halved. 0.75% and I bet that will be optimistic.

CharlestheBold · 11/02/2025 15:51

@TizerorFizz I agree with you about how impossible it is to grow in this tax regime. At the weekend there was a comment that Starmer was surprised there was no plan waiting for him in No10.
What has surprised me is that they are not working for us. The Attorney General, David Lammy and Ed Milliband seem to be working for some kind of 'Common Good', they are not working to make the British people great again.

Well, that’s one way of describing it 🙄

Make the British people great again?

We stole them and used them to our own ends. And even now this deal won't allow the people of Diego Garcia to return to their home after being chucked off in the 1960s and 70s. And will still mean a continued UK/US presence there for another 99 years.

You mean lease payments for the military airbase?

TizerorFizz · 11/02/2025 16:10

These payments are of course massive. I think it’s very difficult to know what’s right. Empires exist - we were just better at it. Russia was pretty good. China has influence over countries and threatens others. Now USA doing the same. I’m not losing any sleep about our ancestors going out into the world. Many nations did the same. We need to think about the here and now.

CharlestheBold · 11/02/2025 16:11

Yes lets have a government that wants to improve our way of life and improve our individual prosperity.
The present Chagos policy will benefit someone else and diminish us. If it is only £90m pa, think what that money could do for hospitals in Hartlepool next year. Next year schools on Shropshire; and so on. We need that money.

Agree with this.
Britain is not exactly in a good position to be offering out money we don’t have.
They have already refused compensation to waspie’s yet now they seem to have found enough to comp another group

CharlestheBold · 11/02/2025 16:21

Thank you I had not mentioned The WASPI, we should be paying the Sub Post masters by now, It is a disgrace they are still wating. Give a £100,000 each on account now, total will be about a Million each.

TizerorFizz · 11/02/2025 16:25

We should not be paying the women. I’m one and I knew. The post office scandal is taking a while because every claim has different aspects. It’s not straightforward. There should be regular reports on progress though.

nearlylovemyusername · 11/02/2025 16:34

£90m to Chagos is loose change.
Wait until they start paying reparations for slave trade, Lammy was very supportive of this. I might be wrong but it seems it's £300bn they are asking for.

TwentyKittens · 11/02/2025 17:13

The vast majority of WASPI women had plenty of notice, so I don't agree with compensation for women who opted to ignore it for years.

Walkden · 11/02/2025 17:24

"Why don’t they remember that we are broke? When this new government started, they warned us that there was no money and we would have to be frugal for a few years."

Well it was the will of the people to vote for Brexit which is apparently costing 100bn a year so it's a bit unreasonable to blame the politicians for it now.

Stole the uninhabited islands in the middle of nowhere from who?

And those people that live on them now don't want their islands to be given to Mauritius. Do Labour believe in democracy?

Another rubbish decision encouraged by a corrupt AG.

TheNuthatch · 11/02/2025 21:51

This government couldn't run a bath I'm afraid. It's gonna be a long 4.5 years. They have zero clue about economic growth. The country can't afford winter fuel payments for pensioners, yet they spend billions on stupid vanity projects.

genesis92 · 11/02/2025 22:58

Welcome to socialism.

We're all in managed decline for next few years at least. What a time to be alive eh

Newsflash .

Not like the conservatives grew the economy which has largely flatlined since 2008. The country and economy had been declining for the best part of 20 years and the public accelerated that voting for Brexit.

The most ridiculous thing I've read in a while.

Labour hasn't been remotely "socialist" since the 1980s, and this lot are indistinguishable from the Tory party of 15 years ago.

"Socialism" 😂

upinaballoon · 14/02/2025 19:05

'Make the British people great again'?

We sure as hell don't need to be starting a daft cliche like that.

I’m not sure what you consider plenty of notice. After the 1996 changes I should have received my pension in 2014, suddenly in 2011 it got pushed back again to 2017. It certainly didn’t feel like plenty of notice to me. Not that I ever expected any compensation anyway. I hope some of you will remember your lack of support for other women the next time the government - of whatever colour - shits on women who might include you.
