So if you watch the video with sound Musk first clutches his heart then outstretches his arm to the crowd saying "My heart goes out to you "

news.sky.com/story/donald-trump-inauguration-us-president-white-house-washington-return-sky-news-live-biden-blog-13209921?postid=8967266#liveblog-body

His message is clear and to attempt to deliberately misinterpret this as some kind of Nazi salute is a bit sad and desperate.

If you want to criticise Trump or Musk then do it on actual policies as @user22446688 suggests in her posts, not on deliberate misinterpretation.

2dogsandabudgie · 21/01/2025 12:15

He touched his heart and said my heart goes out to you and then extended his arm gesturing this. That's what I saw and I'm not a fan of Musk.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 21/01/2025 12:16

Much like Hitler sending love out to the crowds at the Nuremburg fucking rallies in fact

Yeah - offensive to people with Asperger's. They're not morons with a weird form of Tourette's. Musk's too smart for that.

The more it goes, the more I'm reminded of Dr Strangelove... and to think it's only Day 2...

SerendipityJane · 21/01/2025 12:20

If you are in a position where your innocent action can be interpreted as a Nazi salute, then maybe you really need to consider your position.

TorroFerney · 21/01/2025 12:05

Not commenting on whether it was or not but does he have a frozen shoulder as he had to move his whole body backwards to elevate his arm. Reminds me of when my husband would be asked pre surgery to lift his arm above his head and he’d do something similar and then get stuck (in the consultants rooms not live tv).

Yes, almost definitely a frozen shoulder.
Hiltler had one as well.

crumblingschools · 21/01/2025 12:21

I think it is worrying when it is then coupled with his message - the future of civilisation is assured

Except Hitler didn't first clutch his heart and say my heart goes out to you did he?

Seriously if you want to criticise Trump and Musk feel free to crack on - there's enough there to discuss. But this deliberate misinterpretation is coming across as a bit sad and desperate.

At least history will judge them. It’s just about the only comfort right now. That and knowing there are still enough good people who will resist.

They're all just fucking desperate to be allowed to say the N word again and are working their way up to it incrementally.

...desperate to be allowed to say the N word again

With a hard 'R' too.

What's it like being a Nazi apologist? Muslim, Jew, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, no faith and others, we must unite and speak out against evil!

You are right about one thing though: his message is clear as day.

I just want to say, since my post is being responded to, that I wasn't exactly saying that, although it was part of my point.

My bigger point is that Nazi salute or not, Musk has the power and the platform to clarify, but he's choosing not to. Making the choice to create confusion and uproar is part of their mission. They want the support of both the white nationalists and the people who believe they were going to make eggs more affordable.

They got the support of the people who wanted affordable eggs by making them believe that immigrants were a large part of the reason they couldn't afford eggs/houses/medical care because it deflects from their policy goals (to deregulate everything so the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and more pliable). They need to keep that support, but many of those people are uncomfortable with the fascist overtones. At the same time, they also need the support of the Richard Spencer acolytes, who are there specifically for the white supremist fascist overtones.

And, if people are distracted by this, they're not focussing on what's going to happen when H5N1 fully makes the jump to humans and we have an administration that is unprepared and anti-science (just to name one of many issues).

I've never seen anything so cringeworthy as Musk in that video. Regardless of the arm gesture, the whole video just makes me think of an over excitable child or David Brent.

Cattreesea · 21/01/2025 12:31

I was listening to LBC radio this morning and someone phoned in from Germany to say that people there were appalled about Musk's behaviour, that everyone was talking about it and agreed that he had made two nazi salutes. I think they know one when they see one...

I can't believe that some people on this thread are trying to pretend Musk gesture was anything but.

whereaw · 21/01/2025 12:32

@SerendipityJane that is a line of reasoning that does make sense. But the majority of arguments in this thread do not because no one can say what his intentions were, making for a long and pointless thread.

Again, it's fully in his power to clarify his intentions. He's choosing not to.

I would imagine that for every person who thinks it was a Nazi salute there will be just as many who think it wasn't of you listen to what he was saying at the time.

theDudesmummy · 21/01/2025 12:40

By his failure to respond immediately to the impression that it was a Nazi salute (and of course his wholehearted support for actual fascists) he has made his intentions perfectly clear. How much more information do you need? (My son is very autistic, and dyspraxic. Somehow he manages to avoid making Nazi salutes. Or tweeting support for Tommy Robinson).

Earlgreygirl · 21/01/2025 12:42

Nope, don’t think it was a nazi salut! Tho some will enjoy thinking he did.
It was nothing more than a heart felt emotional gesture of the occasion, he was excited!

I thought Musk had given his opinion on it.

It's possible I've missed further clarification from him, but I don't think this clears things up much (from Time).

Musk did not directly address the controversy Monday night, though he replied to a number of posts on X about it—thanking the ADL, mocking Ocasio-Cortez, and agreeing with a post that said: “Can we please retire the calling people a Nazi thing? It didn’t work during the election, it’s not working now, it’s tired, boring, and old material, you’ve burned out its effect, people don’t feel shocked by it anymore, the wolf has been cried too many times.”
Musk also reposted a video clip of his rally remarks that included the moment he made the questionable gesture, commenting: “The future is so exciting!!”
