With recent news on GDP and job vacancies, do you think Labour's actions are about to trigger a recession?

to the same extent as the Conservatives?

XmasAlone · 15/12/2024 22:37

Yawn

PaleAzureofSummer · 15/12/2024 22:39

No. The tories have made the economy 5% smaller with their idiotic brexit idea which will affect us for many years

Ja428 · 15/12/2024 22:39

I think the economy will go down the shitter, it will just go slowly there. A lot of the idiotic stuff Labour have done will take a while to fuck things up, rather than it being instant.

Have you just rejoined us after being lost in the jungle for many years?

TY78910 · 15/12/2024 22:41

I don't think an economy crashes in a matter of months or even a couple of years. This is something that's been brewing up over a much longer period of time

Kandyfloss10 · 15/12/2024 22:45

Probably. Their pathetic policies will kill whatever ambition anyone had left in this country.

What’s worse is they have even managed to alienate their own voters. Nigel Farage will be the pm next time around and where’s that going to leave us?!

Hope all the Labour voters are happy and enjoy getting poorer and watching the pensioners freeze this winter.

StarDolphins · 15/12/2024 22:46

I don’t think they have yet but it coming, slowly.

hattie43 · 15/12/2024 22:49

Labour have never run the economy well . It'll be Reform next giving it a go .

mumda · 15/12/2024 22:49

I'm still waiting to hear about their policies for growing the economy. Building houses without builders/brickies/chippies is not going to happen. The Nimbys usually have a point - and more so now there are so few GP appointments etc.

They've effectively pushed inflation one way and the cowardly bank of england are going to keep rates low so people can keep on the debt merry-go-round.

Mass migration (not the illegal sort, but that doesn't help, hotel prices mean less tourism perhaps) has a complicated effect on housing, and all the other essential services that are needed by humans are beyond breaking point.

This lazy accusation of being a Tory bot or similar - again. I suggest you report any posts you suspect aren’t from genuine mumsnetters to MNHQ, rather than throwing these silly accusations about.

Yes, I remember Liz truss fuckign things up. That doesn’t mean this Labour lot are wonderful. They can all be shit you know.

Plus I am old enough to remember the last Labour government. I was in hospital in 2008. Utterly terrifying re lack of staff and lack of beds. You’re on crack if you think that conservatives took over a wonderful thriving country in 2010. Why did Labour get voted out if all was great?

Perhaps you've forgotten that the was a global economic crash in 2008 which massively impacted the UK.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 15/12/2024 23:08

Yes. They absolutely have. No one in the current government has ever run a business or has any clue about business. They’ve spent so long in opposition, when they can say they will do anything without actually having to do it that they have no idea actually HOW to do it. It’s a cluster fuck and whilst I hope things will improve, I can’t see how they will.

Not saying the Torys were any better, but the most terrifying thing is that Nigel Farrage is looming 🤦‍♀️

DancingFerret · 15/12/2024 23:10

Not yet, but if the reports of the rapid decline in job vacancies are true it won't be long before it does. The reaction of private employers was entirely predictable. The hike in their NI contributions together with the proposed legislation to increase workers' rights means no business owner in their right mind is going to take on new staff - and it's not just small businesses; the likes of Tesco and M&S have said they're rethinking their employment strategy.

Renamed · 15/12/2024 23:11

No.

BunfightBetty · 15/12/2024 23:13

Well it certainly wasn't a budget to stimulate growth, was it?

Painful on top of the damage the Tories already did.

Thatcastlethere · 15/12/2024 23:18

Oh for goodness sake.
The economy hasn't crashed.
There's more of a focus on public services and there's a bit of reaction from businesses. But there needed to be a focus on public services because of the absolutely dire state they were in. The NHS, social care.. the railways (now supposedly coming into public ownership)
You can harp on about business all you want but we were facing a massive crisis in our public services.. particularly with social care. I'm glad this is being prioritised. I'm glad the country isn't being looked at like a giant business. People are dying in hospital corridors. I think that needs to be addressed. The government aren't ceos they are supposed to be taking care of the country and the people in it. Not just trying to make busineses money.

AntiHop · 15/12/2024 22:57

You said conservatives wrecked anything. What did they have to do with 2008 crash?

unclemtty · 15/12/2024 23:24

You're fucking kidding me?!?
After what the Tories have done to this country?

DancingFerret · 15/12/2024 23:26

The point of business is to make money on which they pay taxes to the Government. It follows, I think, that a shrinking jobs market means less money in the Government's coffers which means they'll have less money to invest in public services.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/12/2024 23:27

No @Dbank.

Flyhigher · 15/12/2024 23:31

Omfg. Cannot cope with this.

JingleB · 15/12/2024 23:32

Labour? Are you mad? Have you forgotten who was responsible for Brexit?

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 15/12/2024 23:33

@Dbank , mumsnet is very left wing generally so I would bear that in mind when perusing the responses to your question.
Quite clearly the fiscal response to Labour’s actions has not been positive. I feel quite concerned for our future.
