Elon Musk to give $100m to Reform

The Sunday Times reported that Elon Musk is considering giving $100M to Nigel Farage as a political donation.

Is this even legal? The Trump team got huffy because a bunch of Labour party members went over to volunteer for Harris. This would be a whole other level of outside interference.

I’m not at all pleased with the Labour government, but this seems wrong as a matter of principle.

There are restrictions on amounts of money that can be donated and also who can donate. I would hope this would mean it’s just not possible.

CloudPop · 02/12/2024 11:35

But reform isn't a party, it's a company. So I imagine they can do some sort of deal which will get round the restrictions.

It does seem very much like what Elon wants, Elon gets

Elon is a twat

Reform is a political party registered with the electoral commission. The fact that it is internally constituted as a limited company is irrelevant.

Donation from Tesla or Starlink, which are UK-registered companies which are incorporated in the UK and carries out business in the UK.

In summary he can do this (UK political funding laws are incredibly weak) and no doubt will.

The real worry is that a cash donation of $100m is relatively insignificant, compared to putting a thumb on the scales of the Twitter algorithm. Which it's clear Space Karen is already doing in favour of his preferred right wing parties and candidates.

Reform will win loads of seats at the next GE with this kind of financial support and the SM manipulations

I predict a massive backlash against him from the traditional right wing press here. They are seeing their political influence being eroded by the day and they really don’t like it.

A week is a long time in politics. Four and a half years is an eternity.

Do you really see Reform fading out within four years? the Conservatives keep extending their ongoing leadership car-crash, western politics isn't showing much of a slowdown in the rise of alternative right-wing parties. I'm not convinced that the west has yet hit the bottom of the barrel. It's cheaper/easier for the tabloid media to shout inaccurate/incomplete stories to stir up emotions than it is for them to explain that things are complicated, and not every story is a binary Right vs. Wrong.

Whaaaaaat!!!

Please no.

Why doesn't he fuck right off

Duc · 02/12/2024 12:57

I doubt there is any truth in this, so I bet it’s fake news!

caringcarer · 02/12/2024 12:59

This story was on the radio this morning and they had Nigel Farage in and he said he's heard this rumour but Musk has ever mentioned to him anything about giving him or Reform UK money. He did say Musk liked his policies though and they are both friends of Donald Trump.

His money, his choice. All political parties are corrupt as hell and get their millions donated under the counter/off the books. It's going to worry the main parties though and the lefties. So many people disenchanted with both Labour and Tories, and the only barrier to Reform doing better is insufficient funding. Let's have a level playing field and see how it plays out.

I doubt it. At the GE the Tories were at a historic low point not seen in generations. Labour were hardly convincing either, and yet all Reform managed to achieve was 5 seats. This will represent their high point.

The support just isn’t there. If it wasn’t at this election, it certainly won’t be by the time the TP are able to regroup. I know many quite RW indeed Tories, and none of those would lend their support to Farage the slimy opportunistic grifter- they see him for who his is.

FiveFoxes · 02/12/2024 13:28

In four and a half years, I am not sure they'll be anyone left on Twitter in the UK who isn't already a potential Reform voter.

Every year there's a crop of new voters eligible to vote for the first time.

Reform has been very good at targeting young people before they're eligible to vote, using social media channels less commonly used by adults. It's a tactic that other right-wing parties are using. When you look at the demographics of the popularity of Reform, AfD, etc. it's really quite worrying the inroads they're making in the <18 age ranges.

RedToothBrush · 02/12/2024 13:40

Musk would be best building a factory in each constituency that voted heavily reform. His money would be more useful and it would cost him less. And he'd get something out of it in return. All these areas that are heavily reform have a massive issue with lack of opportunities and jobs. He just would have to stand next to Farage then.

But he wouldn't do this. Ironically.

Elon Musk is not a UK citizen - this must be il
which must be illegal, surely. If not the some new law to need to amended introduced to prevent this. This like a very sick joke.

See the links above. Any company operating in the U.K. can donate to political parties. Musk owns several U.K. companies so can just funnel donations through them.

This is really scary, actually. This country is properly starting to go down the toilet. It’s like we are sleep walking into something awful.
