Elon Musk to give $100m to Reform

The Sunday Times reported that Elon Musk is considering giving $100M to Nigel Farage as a political donation.

Is this even legal? The Trump team got huffy because a bunch of Labour party members went over to volunteer for Harris. This would be a whole other level of outside interference.

I’m not at all pleased with the Labour government, but this seems wrong as a matter of principle.

Yet another reason why billionaires shouldn't exist. Now there's enough incalculable rich people who could theoretically just buy up politics and get a party to do anything they (let's face it, he) want once in power.

Given Musk's beliefs about breeding he'd probably back ending contraception and abortion and every woman not married and with kids by 25 being forced into marriage with an assigned single bloke.

This could be exactly the kind of horrific dystopian future, that we might be sleep walking into.

I'm surprised Farage hasn't resigned as MP yet. He must be very bored with it already.

EmpressoftheMundane · 02/12/2024 17:25

I’d imagine the prospect of £76m would keep him engaged for a while.

Do you really see Reform fading out within four years? the Conservatives keep extending their ongoing leadership car-crash, western politics isn't showing much of a slowdown in the rise of alternative right-wing parties. I'm not convinced that the west has yet hit the bottom of the barrel. It's cheaper/easier for the tabloid media to shout inaccurate/incomplete stories to stir up emotions than it is for them to explain that things are complicated, and not every story is a binary Right vs. Wrong.

I don't see them fading out but nor do I see them gaining enough traction to form a government in 5 years time. I suspect the Tories will bring back Boris by then.

Edited

The greater risk is that Farage does a deal to fold Reform into the Conservatives and achieves his lifelong ambition to lead a major political party. You wouldn't expect the Conservative members to countenance such an outcome, but they've been steadily driving out the moderates for a while now.

Lonelycrab · 02/12/2024 19:32

but they've been steadily driving out the moderates for a while now.

Including their voter base too.
Hence the massive LD win in the southeast and Home Counties.

Abhannmor · 02/12/2024 19:41

Apparently he can do it because the Tories left a loophole in the legislation. All he needs is a UK based company to handle it. Tories like foreign money. But it could be the ruin of them. And British democracy. So ironic - they sold Brexit as getting rid of foreign interference.

icelolly12 · 02/12/2024 20:10

This is terrifying. As well as their hatred towards immigrants, Reform hate the state. I can imagine Farage cutting public sector by 50% and reducing public sector pensions etc...some will say that sounds great but in reality will decimate services and increase unemployment and poverty.

We are definitely sleepwalking into a crisis and hope something is put in place to ensure he can't do this.

I can see a reform and conservative coalition in the future bearing in mind the Tories are moving to the right. Scary times ahead.

Reform will win loads of seats at the next GE with this kind of financial support and the SM manipulations

Remember when everyone was up in arms about billionaire Silicon Valley tech giants funding the democrats and suppressing information on their platforms? Then leaving the platforms in disgust?
Me neither.

Elon was not always a republican supporter but you’d think he was from some of the comments on here.

What does this have to do with a foreign billionaire funding a U.K. party to the tune of £75M? I would expect exactly the same outrage if it was the other way round and a U.K.-based billionaire was bankrolling a US party.

The membership would certainly get behind this but it would never happen as all the leadership wannabes in the parliamentary party would never permit it. You don’t invite Mr Fox into the farmyard when you are aiming to be the king/queen of the (much reduced) dung pile.

So it’s okay for billionaire Bill Gates recently at Downing Strret but not for the billionaire you don’t agree with. Got it.

His money, his choice. All political parties are corrupt as hell and get their millions donated under the counter/off the books. It's going to worry the main parties though and the lefties. So many people disenchanted with both Labour and Tories, and the only barrier to Reform doing better is insufficient funding. Let's have a level playing field and see how it plays out.

Exactly..

But reform isn't a party, it's a company. So I imagine they can do some sort of deal which will get round the restrictions.

It does seem very much like what Elon wants, Elon gets

Reform might be a company but it's registered as a political party....so the rules what ever they are willing apply.

As for my opinion....foreign donations should be banned full stop. The consequences of allowing such donations are horrific and that is clear for all to see ...

Musk is entitled to his opinions but it might be time for the British government to start blocking X from British internet hubs and filtering YouTube content

China style state control over information?

Littlemissgobby · 03/12/2024 20:03

Reform are the biggest hypocrites going. Old Richard tice on radio very happy gor a foreign national to give them money and interfere in our politics yet him and farage was bleating on about Obama and everyone else that they didn't agree with.
Apparently celebrities according to 30 p Lee shouldn't have opinions tet its fine now that elon is slagging off labour.
Fuck these fake Russian backed patriots that are going with their chums trump and elin take down the west and putin is one happy man

username299 · 03/12/2024 20:07

I don't see Clacton voting Farage back in.

Unfortunately, they probably will. It's the demographic.

Hope they get it in time for the Christmas dinner dance.

ThereIsALifeOutThere · 03/12/2024 20:41

My understanding is that government is putting something in place to avoid anything like this happening.

Which is as it should be.
Musk has tendencies associated with being a dictator and being used to get his own way.

Elon Musk has also been to Downing Street as a guest of the previous prime minister - and that is absolutely fine.

What is not ok is foreigners making donations to political parties - it's actually illegal.

dubsie · 06/12/2024 08:03

I wonder why people find reform so appealing, I'm sure most of its supporters have read it's manifesto or contract as they call it.

Private healthcare levy being the biggest clanger, that will see Brits paying astronomical sums for insurance otherwise they will face a very basic care under charity hospital trusts.

British people need to realise you can't have your cake and eat it for nothing. If you think America is so great look at the thousands being denied healthcare provision or the people who thought they were insured only to have claims denied.... thousands have died as a result.

Farage is a liar and he's a con man. He's selling immigration but what he's not advertising is all the other stuff that comes with the package. Cuts, private trusts, bon fire of employment rights, health and safety laws scrapped, scrapping of our environmental commitments...

Immigration is top of the list of most people's list but think long and hard about what these populists are really offering. The people funding Farage are absolute crooks, Aaron Banks being one of them....a non dom with no regard for our democracy implicated in money laundering and modern day slavery, bloody diamonds....

I think a lot of people these days don't read the details....you buy a new car and the deal looks too good to be true....fact is it probably is too good to be true.
