According to the latest yougov poll, 73% of the general public are in favour of this bill. Why is it that I hear politicians are against it. They are elected to represent their constituents. yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/50989-three-quarters-support-assisted-dying-law

If they could articulate beliefs that were compatible with the needs of their constituents and the population as a whole, that would be fine.

They were not elected on the basis of religious belief, were they?

So you don't mind what they vote, just why they vote that way?

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 25/11/2024 19:27

Once you get the bishops out of the house of lords then you can maybe get a shot at secular politics.

Yup, they should go first. Followed by morning prayers in the HoC.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 25/11/2024 19:41

But it might not be religious beliefs that are making them hesitate in voting for assisted dying.

user942557 · 25/11/2024 20:10

Because laws aren't based off YouGov polls?

It is a conscience vote, they have to live with their conscience not yours.

This. It's fine for them to be cautious, allowing deliberate killing of people is a huge deal.

1457bloom · 25/11/2024 20:49

Should they vote for what they think is right or vote for what their constituents believe is right? To what extent should they represent their constituents?

They should take all arguments into consideration and vote based on their analysis.

They're voted for by their constituents to make decisions that take everyone into account.

A ridiculous thing to say. Our democracy is flawed. But there is far more openness and accountability in the UK than in many other countries and regimes.

What countries do you think are doing it better than us?

Other countries? What about them. Openness and accountability? You are fooling yourself.

I would like you to tell us which country you think does it better. Because although the UK is flawed, we are in a better position, and our government is more accountable, than many other countries. Tell us what it should look like?

Kwiaenrker · 26/11/2024 08:30

Tell me how and when the government is held to account?

Every five years when we get to choose who governs us. By the opposition who challenge it continuously. By the media on a daily basis.

Ilovetowander · 26/11/2024 08:54

This recent poll does not necessarily reflect popular opinion. I hope the bill is not passed as can see people being pressured to end their life for the sake of others, I also think the law would be relaxed over time. I believe many people think this way but initially the sway of opinion was that you were unreasonable to disagree.

Kwiaenrker · 26/11/2024 08:56

Do you really believe that every 5 years we have a democratic vote? 33% of the voters chose Labour. Its a joke. By the opposition? Before the election Labour went on and on about winter fuel allowance.....yet one of the first things they did was get rid of it. How can you trust what they say in opposition?

Noras · 26/11/2024 08:58

I think that the only people who should vote are those with experience of watching dying first hand. The rot talked about re better palliative care as if that is a magic cure whilst several parts of your body are literally rotting away and you smell like meat gone off and left out of the fridge too long- sure a bit or morphine helps as you intestines shrivel up and organs fail.

My impression is that few MP have hands on end of life experience.

I suspect you are right, as having gone through the end of life process three times now, it nearly broke us doing it on top of full time work, and you could not possibly do it and be an effective MP.

So you are anti Labour. But what are you for? How would you fix the system?

Where did they go on about winter fuel allowance before the election?

Kwiaenrker · 26/11/2024 09:17

I am not anti/for Labour..that isn't what I said. I said we have a party with a large majority in power with a very small % of the vote. I would like to see a system of PR. In the WFA allowance for example...I am shocked Labour cancelled it given everything they said when in opposition. Actually I think it did need to be looked but what they did shocked me. So despite everything they said, general condemnation and it not being in the manifesto they are doing it.

Ilovetowander · 26/11/2024 09:19

Everyone has a a right to a view - the points about the only people who should be allowed to vote are those of experience could be applied to any bill. Perhaps only those who have children should be able to vote on bills around children, or those who are teachers be allowed to vote on school issues and those in who work in social care only vote on that
