The private sector has also shrunk. More job losses and less money to pay for the huge state.

This is the key problem. It’s the private sector that pays for the public sector. Shrink the former and it inevitably becomes problematic. All the ideology of labour just goes up in smoke if you create job losses and lack of investment in the private sector the wealth creators.
