Letting electorates off the hook

17.4 million Brexit votes in Britain, millions around the world voting for so-called strongmen like Erdogan, Orban etc. Millions of Russians perfectly happy with murder torture, illegal invasion and mass loss of their own soldiers in Ukraine. 80 million voters in America happy to vote for a convicted felon, patholigical liar and adjudicated rapist who was a failed previous President and failed businessman. All the media all seem to do is say, ooh we need to understand these. people, we need to go and talk to thick ignorant people and let then spoil this regurgitated drivel. Perhaps its time to accept that a lot of people are in fact stupid, ill-informed and don't give a toss about anyone except themselves..

I would agree. One of the most idiotic exculpations for these voters is that they only vote like this because people call them stupid, which kind of proves the point.

No. Where the countries you list are democracies, and so we have a system where we have decided to let people choose their governments, we may disagree with their choice, but we have agreed the system and have to accept the outcome. Otherwise we are effectively overthrowing our democratic system.

I think we can however criticise the Democrats in this instance for their failure to offer a more attractive option. It’s their fault they didn’t understand what people wanted, or persuade them that their approach and candidate was better.

Oh so it wasn't rampant misogyny with a side order of racism (before you start with the Obama line to deny the latter- its perfectly possible America has descended further into the sewer of racism since 2012, or that they'll tolerate a black man but. not a black woman). Who the hell were they supposed to out up anyway? It seems that what people wanted was to be lied to by an adjudicated rapist. So there you are. Goodnight America

‘Risk to Democracy’ was cited as a strong factor in driving votes in America in exit polls - voting against the Democrats. Posts like OPs that show why.

The criticism of glibly writing off a large proportion of the country as thick etc, has been discussed at length on other threads.

And it is far more nuanced that you describe in the opening post.

And fomenting division, and rejecting communication between those of opposing views, strikes me as a recipe for strife and even disaster.

Is there anything at all that could emerge that would turn people against Trump? Could he literally do anything at all and they'd still support him?

'the greatest argument against democracy is to spend 5 minutes with the average voter.'

For many possibly not, but he didn’t win the election because of those voters. He won because people who swing between republican and democrat voted for him.
