I am a Labour voter, a Labour supporter and I do not regret my vote.

However, I think that Starmer has been incredibly stupid and/or very badly advised over this expenses issue. He has done nothing wrong, but his behaviour is not what he led us to believe he would do, and I am incredibly exasperated and disappointed.

In my opinion, he should admit that he made a massive misjudgement, and agree to take no more freebies from now on.

Apart from anything else anything which allows people to say "They are all as bad as each other" (they aren't) is a distraction from the real issues the country faces. He should be laser focussed on repairing the damage caused by 14 years of Tory misrule. Not scrambling around dealing with peripheral stuff.
Starmer-say sorry. Don't do it again. And get back to work.

I can’t say I’m much impressed by the crop of Tories in Parliament still standing after the election. But I doubt Labour are somehow gleeful at a right-leaning Tory being the next leader, rather than a left-leaning one, whoever it is.

The Tories lost on the basis of failure to deliver and of sleaze, not for being too extreme.

The Tories’ fortunes are mostly in Labour’s hands, or at least linked to Labour’s own political fortunes, anyway.

As people, Labour ministers are already widely disliked after three months. If the economy tanks, they’ll be out whoever they face.

Of the two left in the running, I’d like to see Badenoch win. Jenrick would have to be ditched within two years. He seems talentless, uninspiring and unsuited to bashing the government from opposition.

Oops I didn't see that. Sorry if it smarts (twice!)

Not at all.

See Rummly’s post above. Why would there be Labour glee at a potential right wing leader over a left wing one?

DuncinToffee · 09/10/2024 17:26

Sorry, but Cleverly is left wing?

CurlewKate · 09/10/2024 17:53

@DuncinToffee "Sorry, but Cleverly is left wing?"

Compared to Badenoch and Jenrick he is certainly on the left of the right.

Left leaning I should have said - at least more than the other two

Because neither of them is electable as a future PM. The electorate is generally Centre Right and they are both way too far right. People vote on more than the economy.

Interesting you say that. I wondered what the verdict was as I missed the speeches

I agree generally. It’s easier for whoever gets it if Starmer keeps losing on ratings

In what way is Badenoch “too far right” for the average voter?

The Tories didn’t lose the last elections because they were more to the right that centre right.

If anything they lost because they were to the left, as evidently the votes they lost to Reform.

And we see a swing to the Right pretty much everywhere in Europe. The UK is an outlier now. In five years time the swing to the Right will be even bigger.

Nordione1 · 09/10/2024 18:41

Agreed. Kemi Badenoch is in no way "far right". Be good to have some clear water between Labour and the Conservatives. As Labour are the nasty party these days that can only be a good thing.

Badenoch can out nasty anyone! I’m looking forward to an avalanche of maternity pay style gaffes.

Terminology. Too right wing. Not literally far right. Thought that would be obvious.

Not "far right" but too right wing? For who? For someone who votes Labour?

I personally don't have a helpful view on who Labour should have as leader once Sir K gets the boot as I'm not left wing so wouldn't know what appeals to a Labour voter.

TizerorFizz · 09/10/2024 19:20

@CurlewKate Where I live all y6 are entered for the 11 plus unless parents withdraw them. Yes, the FSM dc do require lower scores. You are therefore wrong on both counts. Eg a very sought after girls grammar keeps 12 places for PP/LAC dc. They need to score 115 not 121 everyone else has to score.

She's not in government so it doesn't really matter for the next five years what her talk is on maternity pay. It's just talk.

Labour however are actually walking the walk on being nasty. Shame.

TizerorFizz · 09/10/2024 19:23

@Nordione1 You do! It’s something for nothing. Making others pay. Taking from people who actually create jobs and being jeolous of people who do well.

TizerorFizz · 09/10/2024 19:29

I also think the cons will have to stop the splits, reflect on policies and stop being like Reform. That means loss of votes to Reform though. They aren’t attracting young people and their voter base is dying out.
