However, I think that Starmer has been incredibly stupid and/or very badly advised over this expenses issue. He has done nothing wrong, but his behaviour is not what he led us to believe he would do, and I am incredibly exasperated and disappointed.

In my opinion, he should admit that he made a massive misjudgement, and agree to take no more freebies from now on.

Apart from anything else anything which allows people to say "They are all as bad as each other" (they aren't) is a distraction from the real issues the country faces. He should be laser focussed on repairing the damage caused by 14 years of Tory misrule. Not scrambling around dealing with peripheral stuff.
Starmer-say sorry. Don't do it again. And get back to work.

Why is it unreasonable to then ask why people who are equally incensed at this behavior weren't when the Tories were/are doing it?

@iwishihadknownmore

There are plenty of regular Labour supporters on mn who haunted political threads, constantly criticising Tories and pouncing on anyone who defended them. Why aren’t they equally incensed now Labour are doing it?

Araminta1003 · 21/09/2024 20:11

@CurlewKate - OK so show me a similar country in which the Left Leaning party attend the football etc as much as possible? Haven’t seen Biden do much of it. They will hold themselves out as the more intellectual/morally superior party etc and they will keep themselves safe and busy, in the interests of the country as a whole.
I wonder if this was more political advice to get down with the people. Because of the populist threat, who actually knows?!

Ummm yes i was would have been one of them.

did you read my post where i said i was incensed?

On the regular Starmer/Labour thread, every single Labour supporting poster is very pissed off at Starmer et al.

Good question, would pp like Keir, Reeves and Rayner to repay the £ for glasses, clothes and NYC?

yes they should. Anyone on MPs salary should be able to buy their own work clothes.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 21/09/2024 22:03

Can we just agree that the Tories were no better BUT but voting Labour in on a platform of integrity and doing things differently we hoped all this grubby freebie taking behaviour would cease.
In my opinion it's the rules that need to change, no freebies - ever. Then no one can misinterpret rules or miss 'deadlines'. Both Tories and Labour sign up to that, wipe the slate clean, stop harping on about what went on in the past and focus on running the country with some semblance of competence.

Nordione1 · 21/09/2024 22:30

There's so much weird stuff that's going on right now! The Civil Service seems to be in revolt and are saying that Starmers government is"fundamentally dysfunctional" and he's got four weeks to sort it out. Or what, I wonder? This is all very strange.

That seems very unlikely. I suspect that’s an over-excited journo or one under instruction to hype everything up.

I thought the Head of the Civil Service had resigned over Sue Gray and several members of Keir's office have also resigned. And Starmer's popularity is now -26 (worse than Rishi, would you believe). So things aren't going swimmingly. Anyway we shall see.

Ukhotelsareshit · 21/09/2024 23:02

It is also being reported that Angela Rayner (she who shouted loudest about Matt Hancocks affair) took MP Sam Tarry, her affair partner, with her to Lord Ali’s £2.5m apartment in manhattan for New Year. Which she declared at £250 per night. After she claimed she broke up with him in the November.
None of them have an ounce of integrity.

Good - rightly so.

This is just the start, so you might be in for the long haul.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 22/09/2024 00:07

So it seems that after things blew up about clothes, having freebie tickets, holidays etc last week, Freebie Keir the. took a gift of a private box to watch the football from Tottenham themselves last Sunday 🤦‍♀️Lammy was there too.
Apparently Keir’s had over £40,000 of free football tickets since 2019. Calls into jeopardy Labours impartiality in appointing a new football regulator, (which would have the power to stop teams joining breakaway leagues and to block investment from controversial countries) when one of those teams involved are providing the freebies.

Radio 4 saying a source has said Starmer has 4 weeks to get his house in order or face rebellion plus the Raynor "friend" issue with heavy emphasis on "friend".
They are simply hypocrites and I hope all the rabid Labour supporters who were so vile to anyone criticising Labour during and straight after the election are now regretting their language and vehemence that Labour are holier than thou.
Hoisted by their own petard indeed.

Interesting.

Rayner was always going to prove a liability, given she is in hock to the unions and a self-confessed ‘gob’. Look forward to that story.

Agree, their arrogance has been breathtaking.

I think they are doing a great job to be honest, shaking up the rental market is a good move. I've seen so many people evicted under section 21 and people are then left relying on state emergency accommodation at great cost to the tax payer.

Met a couple yesterday who were served a section 21 because the land lord had raised the rent to 900 per month in Leicester....two bed home. They ended up in emergency accommodation which costs the tax payer over 700 pounds a week.

Landlords are crying right now because they have been caught red handed ripping people off....it's pay back time

Are you forgetting Boris or the private jets...it's amazing how people forget what the Tories were like

MoneyNeverSleeps · 22/09/2024 07:47

Starmers personal approval rating has fallen below Sunaks - suffering a 45 point drop since winning the election, so few agree with you I’m afraid.

Nah.

Theyre leaving the market because of CGT etc-
better to exit now before 30 October if possible.

Hence the S.21’s

A very tight rental market is coming.

No, the exodus from the rental market started after the proposed changes to EPC ratings, but then dropped, followed by interest rate hikes & Sunaks changes to allowances.

Those on interest only mortgages just cannot afford them anymore.

Changes to the base rate CGT? thats only been rumoured very recently.

Tight rental market???? where have you been for the last 2 years???

There now no problem that Tories wont get put at Labours door.

No.

Alignment of CGT is a nailed on cert - and the markets are reacting to the rose garden speech. When I say tight, I mean you haven’t see anything yet. Demand for guarantors etc. The counterparty risk will be way too high.

Forget the obsession with the Tories - Labour are in power for the moment, and boy aren’t they abusing it. Lots of lovely freebies.

FFS.

The constant whining about Boris is a simple distraction/deflection attempt rather than taking ownership.
