Just that.

Imagine Mr. Trump is not a happy bunny today.

Perhaps Biden is in fact no longer with us and is a carboard cut out/hologram.
Its beyond embarassing.

An actor was voted into office previously - Ronald Reagan. Precedent already set.

Regan was Governor of California first, he didn't go from the studio to the White House.

Trump wasn't governor of anywhere first. He went straight from being a failed business man to the White House.

Yes but I don't think "It worked for Trump" is a strategy the Democrats will want to follow!

I don't follow US politics closely but they can surely find someone in their existing ranks.

Newbutoldfather · 12/07/2024 08:24

Michelle Obama is the only democrat who consistently polls to beat Biden in a head-to-head. She is currently fourth in the betting at about 30/1.

She has consistently said she is not interested, but how many have said that before?!

She knows how to campaign and what being president entails. If anyone can be parachuted in last minute, I think she is the one.

Newbutoldfather · 12/07/2024 08:25

To beat Trump.

Must be evidence of impending senility!

She would have to start from scratch for campaign money wouldn’t she?

No idea how much Biden / Harris have or if it’s doable to get the amount needed

Although he didn’t move from actor to President, as he was Governor of California
in between.

He has no political experience. What makes him fit to run for President??

Is being "suitable" a qualification the US people require from their candidates?

I don't think so. Biden isn't the official candidate until the DNC (Democrat National Convention) in (I think) September. Until then they can choose another candidate.

The White House resident elected in 2016 would indicate it’s not.

outdamnedspots · 12/07/2024 09:08

Huh, clearly not, @puffinfoot. It should take more than just money to become President, though!!

That is the hard deadline for the candidate but the money is a bit different

This covers the options for the $91m campaign fund and who can use if

’her husband’
So we get Obama pulling the strings and puppet wife ruling the world??? How can anyone think this isn’t bonkers???

Though isn't this the current situation re Jill Biden and a past situation with Nancy towards the end of Reagan's presidency?

(I don't think Michelle could be tempted to stand. But I did really really appreciate the Keanu Reeves comment 😂)

PeasfullPerson · 12/07/2024 09:28

So much damage has been done to entire groups of people, by leaders who cling onto their own power at any cost.

I wish he would step down. It might be that because of his apparent decline in cognitive abilities, and the discomfort of accepting it’s time to pass the baton on, that he really can’t see what’s happening.

The consequences of this are huge. In the absence of Joe Biden being able to understand the situation, the people around him really need to step in, for his own sake, and for everyone that will be impacted if Trump wins, which is a wide net of people.

This is scary.

BIossomtoes · 12/07/2024 09:32

If Biden doesn’t step down they might as well scrap the election and just let Trump walk into the White House unopposed. The whole thing terrifies me. I wish Michelle Obama would change her mind.

Highly recommend today’s TRIP US podcast, though it was recorded before last night’s gaffes.

Both Katty and Mooch think Biden will be gone before too long, whether that is step aside entirely - giving Kamala a massive leg up as she’d go into the election as the incumbent - or see out his term and endorse someone as his successor.

Both say they are in contact with Democratic Party/White House insiders who are absolutely adamant that Biden must go but that currently he’s surrounded by people who have a vested interest in him staying <cough> Hunter <cough>

As they also point out, Trump wants Biden to run - he thinks he can beat him. A younger, fresher candidate is an unknown to him and could mean game over.

There's rumours they'll parachute Michelle Obama in last minute. Her husband still meets with world leaders on the down low regularly.

She’s said she would never run for office. Sadly. She’d be fabulous. I think this is wishful thinking. But I’ll keep everything crossed just in case.
