Suella: no thank you!

She seems pleased as punch by the GE result. Might alienate her MP colleagues (if indeed they can be alienated further from her than they already are). Does she not realise that there is zero general appetite for her divisive, aggressive approach to politics, or that Farage would eat her chickens if she lets him in the hen house. Can't see her winning a leadership contest because it would be the beginning and end of the Tory campaign in 2029. Interested to know what others think?

I share your view @mybeesarealive . I don't understand why
Cruella seems to think far right is the way to go to win an election. Obviously, there's some appetite, hence the number of Reform votes, but I don't think it's most people. It's when the parties are positioned more centrally that they usually win ...

The last time in the UK right wing parties won more than 50% of the vote was 1931.

Braverman's ambition/competence axis is going to either send her on the same trajectory as Liz Truss or alienate the Tories sufficiently for her to be rejected.

Perhaps her plan B if the Tories won't bend to her will is to join Farage.
Will Reform have disgraced themselves to such an extent that they become a non entity before Braverman jumps?

ageratum1 · 08/07/2024 10:28

Reform is her natural political home.I suspect she will jump if she gets nothing in the Tories

mybeesarealive · 08/07/2024 11:02

Interesting. So the trajectory is this:

  1. Leadership ambitions fail to take off.
  2. Return to back bench embittered.
  3. Self sabotage at some point be going off message.
  4. Lose whip.
  5. Join Reform.
  6. Fall out with Farage.
  7. Booted out of Reform.
  8. Unseated at the next election.

Ideally yes. And looking likely.

Has Badenoch been demoted in the shadow cabinet? Can't help but think that shadow levelling up is a non job compared to business secretary.

There's no Levelling Up person in the actual cabinet anymore so I guess there can't be one in the shadow cabinet.

Hmm I just checked and Badenoch does seem to be Shadow Levelling Up even though apparently that bit has been ditched from the name in the actual cabinet.

BIossomtoes · 08/07/2024 23:33

What’s really joyous is that she’s shadowing Rayner.

Sadly the people of Fareham think she's marvellous. I think she will let someone else take all the flack now. She's a disruptor, just like Farage. None of them actually want to get their hands dirty.

I am in Braverman's Fareham constituency. Unfortunately tactical voting did not work: more votes were split between labour and Lib Dem so instead of assuming we are all her fans, look at how we are stuck cringing at her 'Tofu eating, Guardian reading Wokerati' rubbish. Fareham has been Tory since around 1800s; many here would vote for my cat if I put a blue rosette round her neck.

LightandAiry · 09/07/2024 09:14

Dearover · 07/07/2024 18:35

There's no immigration problem in Fareham or most of the towns on the south coast. The Tories on the New Forest side are old school, with labour and lib dems surrounding. I just don't understand what her attraction is.

No immigration issues at all, in fact workers are needed for elderly care as there's a shortage of people. There are people around here who are worried about their pension pots under labour (nothing other than self interest and unfounded) and they liked Brexit. Her seat was actually under threat but as I said above, the opposition was split.

If she joins Reform there's a good chance she will lose her seat as a large proportion of voters in Fareham are true blue tory.

mybeesarealive · 09/07/2024 10:14

Yes. A bit different to Lee Anderson's constituency, where there is more voter volatility.

What I want most from political leaders now is truth and honesty, not banging on about "woke" this or that just to get an audience. It's tiring and we're all done with this dishonest populist shit.

mybeesarealive · 09/07/2024 15:29

Here's hoping that by the time of the next election That's Braverman's name is heard about as often as you hear people talking about Rebecca Long Bailey (remember her)?

She'll be running some kind of underground resistance group.

She’s still a backbencher, she won with a 15k majority on 4 July.

Thanks @BIossomtoes she was so high profile for a while, wasn't she? I wonder if it was her choice to take a lower profile.

She was sacked from the shadow cabinet a few years ago for something to do with antisemitism. I can't remember the details, I think it involved an article, but I don't think she wrote it.

She came second in the leadership contest when Starmer was voted in. I think it speaks volumes for her that she didn’t flounce when she lost.
