Any farmers that voted for Brexit - what do you think now?
Again - genuinely interested.

Four months of tumbleweed.

I can't decide whether
a) no farmers voted to leave, or
b) they're too embarrassed to discuss it.

It's a real conundrum Grin

MiscellaneousSupportHuman · 16/11/2024 19:53

I thought farmers generally didn't support Brexit? NFU was "remain"

And I think right now farmers are considerably more concerned by changes to inheritance tax, which are sod all to do with brexit.

ObieJoyful · 16/11/2024 19:56

The farmers in this area were all for it.

I'm not sure that it's quite true to say sod all to do with Brexit. There is no direct causal factor, however Brexit did cause the economy to tank, in conjunction with the Trussterfuck, which means less revenue for the government, and so tax rises mean more revenue for the government. It is a tenuous link I grant you.

Also, Brexit did cause a very unstable government with no continuity in the cabinet and so a revolving door of ministers and no implemented plans.

Not that I think the Labour Party will solve it all, but at least they are nailing their colours to the mast and will be judged as such.

It is alla complete fuster cluck really.

Yeah, mine too. Massive great 'Vote Leave' signs in their feilds. Fishermen as well, they were all for it.

ssd · 16/11/2024 20:14

I've got no sympathy for anyone shafted by brexit who believed the lies and voted to leave.

Hell mend them

Wow...in every single farm?

There are quite a few farms. Those signs are big though aren't they. Hard to miss.

I wonder whether we’re in the same area.

Lots of farmers and fisherman voted leave.
The majority I think.

crumblingschools · 19/11/2024 14:03

Wasn’t it a promise of less red tape and different grants. Bit like all the other empty Brexit promises

Darklane · 19/11/2024 14:00

You think or you know? What's informed this view- do you know lots of farmers well?
I say this because all my family members (farmers) voted remain and plenty ofpeople from farming backgrounds i know did too. My understanding is that the split amongst the farming community was about 50/50 reflecting what happened in the wider population.

Its really galling as someone whose family was really concerned about brexit to hear this being repeated again and again. I just want to check that when people say this that they are actually informed on the issue, know some farmers personally as actual people and not just basing it on seeing a handful of signs in fields and what they have read in the media ☹️

Flyhigher · 20/11/2024 07:08

Overall farmers voted the same as the general population

In some areas much higher though.

That bar chart doesn't look accurate to me. Not disputing the numbers but the size of the bar. The size of farmers/public looks weighted differently so at first glance it makes the public vote look bigger than the farmers vote? I'm on my phone so might not be seeing the numbers clearly.

OneBlackHeart · 20/11/2024 10:30

My farming family had a row with my non farming father over it. The farming side were very remain and so were all the farmers they knew. I'm surprised by stats that say otherwise it was quite a strong opinion at the time

I think maybe it changed by area. I know that most of the farmers in our area voted leave because they were extremely vocal about it.

I’m in the NW, between Preston and Lancaster, in a rural area.

Yes that definitely looks weighted to be misleading to me. Top bar, West Midlands, 62% looks smaller than 59%.

ethelredonagoodday · 21/11/2024 22:02

My ILs are also north west, but far north, and very definitely voted leave, as did most of their neighbours. Interestingly, my MIL who originally wasn't from a farming background voted remain, but she was the only one. They were all very open about it.

So you know all the (many) famers in that area and how they voted?

or are you just making an unsubstantiated assumption because some of the fields you can see from the A6 had leave signs in them?

Scrowy · 21/11/2024 22:05

As a farmer who voted remain and would do again the whole 'all farmers voted for Brexit' trope is infuriating.

Yes it clearly is a distorted graphic.

Particularly if you look at the NW stat, 62:54. That’s a clear margin.

Use the zoom on your phone to place either of these bars underneath the mumsnet adress bar at the top of the screen. Note where they both reach.

It’s a distorted graphic for sure. Well spotted @Kendodd

No. I know a lot of the farmers in my area, and the ones I don’t know were also quite vocal on local pages.

There were perhaps some who were quiet about their vote.

It’s a community- I don’t live on the A6.

I’m sorry if I’ve offended you, especially if you live locally. I’m only commenting on what I’ve seen and heard. I would really like to hear of other perspectives.
