Any farmers that voted for Brexit - what do you think now?
Again - genuinely interested.

I suspect in the next election farmers will have massive great 'Reform' signs on their land.

Labour have a fair few rural MPs, they might lose those

EasternStandard · 30/11/2024 16:02

I think it would be fair to say that a high percentage of farmers (and other business owners) are rather pissed off with the labour government.

There are hopeful signs however. Let's see what tomorrow brings!

@notanothernamechange24 what are the hopeful signs?

It is quite remarkable that the farmers love Reform, seemingly forgetting what Farage promised them with Brexit. They're happy to blame everyone else for that but not the guy who made them vote for it and ran away...

What farmers love Reform?

Not sure if you mean
"What? Farmers love Reform?" or
"Which farmers love Reform?"
I was responding to @Kendodd as I also noticed a large amount in comments sections and in various Fail papers saying it was the only viable party for farmers at the last election.
As a side note I notice Mr Phil Spencer's farmer parents left £18 mil to be split in their Will without IHT. Poor bunch these farmers.

I'm not sure that it's quite true to say sod all to do with Brexit. There is no direct causal factor, however Brexit did cause the economy to tank, in conjunction with the Trussterfuck, which means less revenue for the government, and so tax rises mean more revenue for the government. It is a tenuous link I grant you.

Also, Brexit did cause a very unstable government with no continuity in the cabinet and so a revolving door of ministers and no implemented plans.

Not that I think the Labour Party will solve it all, but at least they are nailing their colours to the mast and will be judged as such.

It is alla complete fuster cluck really.

Edited

I was anti Brexit and think it was a big mistake. I fixed my mortgage for a signifigant time after Brexit as I knew it would negatively effect the economy. However I don’t think it’s fair to claim the current situation on Brexit alone as the policy of austerity, Covid, Ukraine war and Truss budget all have had their parts to play in where we arw now.

I’m not a farmer.

privatenonamegiven · 30/11/2024 18:42

@Lifeglowup agree it certainty isn't all down to Brexit. However, anyone who tries to discuss the current situation without recognition of Brexit (much of the media do this, and many of members of parliament) is being unreasonable. The situation we are in has been made much much worse by Brexit and denying that is foolish.

Grantanow · 30/11/2024 19:23

Just because they're farmers doesn't mean they are competent to vote in referendums!

Agreed. That's why I didn't claim that the current situation is due to Brexshit alone.

I just said that it was a contributory factor and can't be excluded.

I don’t think farmers have faith in any particular party at the moment. Yes all farmers have £18 million to pass on 🙄

EasternStandard · 30/11/2024 19:48

It does seem that farmers are having tougher times in a fair few countries

With protests etc in response

I wonder if there's common factors, there likely are but I haven't thought it through

TizerorFizz · 30/11/2024 23:03

The problems are rising costs and limited income from sales. We import cheap food and don’t want to pay for home produced food. So prices for produce are squeezed. The returns on the value of the farms isn’t great. The value was no IHT.
