HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 04/07/2024 23:27

I have not voted
Reform and live in a safe tory seat But I voted
Lib dem tactical vote

I said ages Ago on here the reform would do really well and was shouted down.

Same as brexit, no one will admit voting for reform but
They still do it in droves it seems.

I'm Willing to bet they
Might win an election in four years at this rate!!

Scary
Times

I agree. I'm very concerned that 4 independents have ousted Labour in muslim constituencys on a Gaza ticket. Without getting into the rights and wrongs of the Middle East conflict, I absolutely don't agree with religion based politics and believe it's a dangerous place for the UK to go.

The Gaza situation isn't about religion. Starmmar was too slow to respond to that one. My BIL who is white and middle aged ( classic gammon if you will) has bycotted Isreali goods for years. The Palastinain situation is complex and nuanced.

We have an ageing population and low birth rate. Increasing immigration is inevitable. All Brexit did was reduce immigration from closer European countries and increase immigration from countries further away. All it meant is more migrants from countries further away who are less likely to return to their home country once they become older. Elderly and sick people need people to take care of them and aren't working themselves. Nigel Farage and Reform don't offer any solutions to the problems of an ageing population. All they do is simply benefit from people's frustration at stagnant wages and high cost of living and fear of people of different cultures coming over.

PollyPeachum · 05/07/2024 11:43

@Neurodiversitydoctor And it was announced that Istreal confiscated another 5 square miles of West Bank land yesterday.

CaveMum · 05/07/2024 11:43

Nige won’t cope well with life at Westminster. He may go in all guns blazing, but give it a few months and he’ll get bored with the day-to-day routine and will start turning up less and less.

Garlicnaan · 05/07/2024 11:48

They had a mock election at my sons school (secondary) yesterday. Having read all the policies and background for each party, Reform won by a landslide.

That's terrifying. In my DC's school they did the same and Greens won.

This thread is showing exactly why people have voted Reform - there's a nasty implication of stupid, working class, northern idiots. Don't worry, the sensible southerners will show them how they should have voted.

I think the implication is more that Reform are a bunch of racists to be fair. Also, Clacton isn't in the north, so bang goes your theory.

Given the Labour majority, he might be right to carry out his politics outside Parliament where he may have a bigger impact.

This doesn’t surprise me at all.

Why should anyone who wants smaller government, much lower taxes, action on uncontrolled mass immigration rather than more empty words, a crackdown on ‘wokery’ etc etc vote Tory when they have delivered the opposite?

This. Tories never delivered what many of their voters wanted. Can only serve up empty promises for so long …

caringcarer · 05/07/2024 11:56

PortiasBiscuit · 05/07/2024 06:40

No but voting for the Reform Party does mean you are racist!

No it doesn't. It's got nothing to do with race and more to do with numbers.

Bullpuckey · 05/07/2024 11:58

it isn’t actually. Japan and China do better than the UK and do not accept immigrants. They are further along the demographic ‘disaster’ but it’s fine actually,

All Brexit did was reduce immigration from closer European countries and increase immigration from countries further away

That was probably the first time immigration was put to a direct vote: you can’t fault people for taking the only option ever offered to them. If immigration was ever put to a referendum, you know how the result would go … that’s why they don’t do this

WoodforTrees · 05/07/2024 11:59

Don't be too sure that those school mock elections voters were only lured by Farage's 'anti-woke' stance. Whilst it's true that this next generation IS definitely less inclined to follow the TWAW brigade, they are also - like it or not - voting with immigration in mind.

Farage speaks in TikTok sized sound bites that work for that generation

"This is a small country and unfortunately, we just can't sustain the amount of immigration"

"Of course the NHS is breaking, there are too many people trying to access it"

"We cannot afford to build homes quickly enough to support British people because there is too much demand"

"We should be proud of our values and immigrants don't want to integrate so they are now being eroded which is a terrible shame"

All sounds 'logical' to a fourteen year old

They don't read manifestos, they watch 20 quick videos on social media and make their minds up. He knows what he is doing.

Yeah, you're probably right and it's just a coincidence that the 4 independent MPs have been voted in in constituencys where there is a large Muslim vote 🙄

Islam is a massive world religion I think what you mean to say is that there are large Bangladeshi , Pakistani and Palestinian communities in those constituencies. Not so sure about Islington North.....I would suggest that if you have relatives in Gaza you might be more invested in the major party's stance on this. Just like I am more likely to vote on the health agenda- there is nothing surprising or wrong with that.

BaileysforBreakfast · 05/07/2024 12:13

I wonder if it's dawned on Nigel that as an MP he'll have to declare all financial interests?

Wow! What a sacrifice to boycott Israeli goods! How has he managed to survive?

Neurodiversitydoctor · 05/07/2024 12:16

Also surely more independent MPs is a good thing ?

What do you mean by that ? I am just saying the Palestine issue is long standing and complex and not an inclusively " Muslim" issue. Whatever the fuck that means anyway.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 05/07/2024 12:21

and those voters in Bradford and Leicester have a point , just like those not voting labour because of their stance of women's rights.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 05/07/2024 12:24

My mother wouldn't buy South African fruit in the 80's. I won't buy out of season vegetables grown under glass in Kenya while there are Keynans without enough to eat. Most educated peoples' consumer habits are to some extent informed by their ethics.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 05/07/2024 12:27

Sorry exclusivly Muslim.

Kovus · 05/07/2024 12:41

Tracker1234 · 05/07/2024 09:50

Kovos - how would they distribute wealth?

CGT on your main house would result in NO ONE moving. Or worse house prices would increase to take this account but again wouldnt benefit people trying to get on the housing ladder.

Higher VAT on luxury goods.
Restrict relief on pension contribution (80% tax relief is too high).
Taper tax breaks for wealthy (no ISA allowance, VCT, etc).
increase CGT rates.
Tax undistributed corporate profits at source (was the case until 1989).
New council tax (possibly a co-efficient of income for homes > £2.5m).

There are many ways. Whether or not they create net economic gains is the big question!

Sloejelly · 05/07/2024 12:43

Of course religion is a huge factor in Israel/Gaza/West Bank and very particularly Jerusalem. You cannot separate the conflict from religion.

Tracker1234 · 05/07/2024 12:45

I guess the question is who is the wealthy? A lot of people think its people that earn more than them regardless of what they earn in the first place! Starmer stated that a working person was someone who couldnt write a cheque if an unexpected bill came in? That is a very low bar although of course there are people who have no savings and are on NMW. Is that who is classing as Working Person?

I am absolutely not talking about my Italian neighbour as an example of multi- cultralism he has an anti- intergration stance himself.

I was speaking about my Educational and professional experience and that of my children. My secondary school was absolutely not a middle class enclave. Plenty of single parent families, huge number of children of 1st generation immigrants. I refute this is a exclusively middle class standpoint. It might be a metropolitan, urban perspective but it is not middle class.

Just watching the coverage, Rishi had a mention of multiculturalism in his farewell speech and just look at the rainbow of faces greeting Kier as he enters Downing Street. Today saying farewell to a Hindi prime minister and welcoming a working class lad with a Jewish wife I am proud of our multiculturalism. For me it is what makes this nation great.
