Anyone else planning to set an early alarm to watch the results come in?

We didn’t bother in 2019, but there should be more than a few Portillo moments worth getting up at 3:30 for this year. Several friends are doing the same, and I appear to be in a WhatsApp group called 3:30 am Massacre of the Innocents, which I presume is ironic.

Will we be watching Rory and Alistair on Channel 4? Or BBC coverage?

Anyone else planning an early wake up, and to get through Friday fuelled by coffee and hope for a brighter future?

Oh yes!
Drinking my socialist champagne 🥂🥂🥂🌹🌹🌹

I have got party supplies and will set up the living room tomorrow night with nibbles and drinks, and duvets/sleeping bags available. Well crack open the drinks when the exit polls open at 10pm. I have two teenagers with school the next day but I have said they are allowed to stay up for as much of the night as they want. I expect we’ll watch for an hour or so and then I’ll turn the volume down low so the kids can get a bit of sleep, but I’ll wake them up when the results start coming in thick and fast. I expect I’ll get a bit of sleep between 11pm and 2am as that’s the boring bit, but then be glued to the telly for another couple of hours, and maybe get another hours’ sleep before getting up for school at 6am.

i have politics in my DNA - was envelope stuffing for the SDP before I started school and I love an election!

MaGueule · 03/07/2024 19:08

GHSP Me too! I remember stuffing envelopes the SDP/liberal alliance in the 80s.

I’m half French, so it’s been quite a political rollercoaster over these couple of weeks. My family is barely talking about the UK election, given what’s going on over the Channel.

I've never stayed up for an election night, and I have Friday off, so I plan to do it tomorrow.

Will this be the thread for those of us staying up?

SilverSimca · 03/07/2024 19:12

I was delivering Liberal SDP Alliance leaflets in the 80s as well! (With my mum - I was born in 1975 so would have been quite young).
I am actually at a gig tomorrow night, booked before the election was announced, so will impose the exit poll but thinking of just staying up after the gig

lavenderlou · 03/07/2024 19:14

Planning to go to bed straight after the exit poll then be up between about 2.30 and 5 to see some of the results. Have bought snacks in preparation!

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 03/07/2024 20:02

Party with my mum and off on Friday. We have gin, red wine and prosecco. Curry at 8pm. Prosecco to be popped at 10pm 😁

mynewusername2023 · 03/07/2024 20:04

I'll probably fall asleep with the TV on. I have to be up at 5.30am for work so will probably get up a bit sooner to see the final results coming in.

Stripesandchecks543 · 03/07/2024 20:04

Alastair & Rory for me!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/07/2024 20:04

I used to stay up and I really want to but don't think I have enough energy anymore think I am past it. Taking the iPad to bed though

Metempsychosis · 03/07/2024 20:06

I've got a nightmare day at work on Friday with loads of Zoom meetings so can't afford to stay up late or listen to coverage on the radio while I work. I'm gutted.

DBD1975 · 03/07/2024 20:06

Me too, can't wait I have my outfit, snacks and drinks planned already! We will also be up all night watching the Tories getting anhilated and enjoying every delicious minute of it!

Spirallingdownwards · 03/07/2024 20:06

No because there aren't any shocks to be had this time.

Going to bed after the exit poll and getting up about 3
Cant wait to see the return of a labour government

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 03/07/2024 20:25

Did anyone hear Chris Mason on the 6oclock news? May have welled up a little!! 🤣🤣

MorrisZapp · 03/07/2024 20:26

I'm unconvinced by the 'bed straight after exit poll' brigade. The exit poll is the starting gun on the actual coverage, and if it's in any way different to previous polling, they'll be swingometering the fuck out of it. I suspect this will be the moment people shuffling towards the bedroom find themselves oddly drawn back to the sofa. Not to mention witnessing Nicola Sturgeon as a pundit in real time. As Pavarotti said... None shall sleep!

I always stay up. I have some cold soft drinks and some crisps as a treat and I watch the whole thing from 10pm. DH doesn't always but he is tomorrow. We want a huge Labour majority.

StripedPiggy · 03/07/2024 20:38

I’m doing an all-nighter. I will finish work around 4-30, then straight to bed for a few hours kip before waking up for the exit poll. Then it’s time to pop the 🍾 (hopefully), get the 🍿 out & watch the fun as the Tory party gets obliterated.

LlynTegid · 03/07/2024 20:39

I think the sunshine coming through my windows will be enough to wake me up.

TheGriffle · 03/07/2024 20:40

I’ve volunteered to work the count in my town so won’t be home until gone 3am I don’t think so will have a little look before I try and get some sleep.

MotherOfCatBoy · 03/07/2024 20:41

We’ve got popcorn and bubbly at the ready though I’m still not prepared to pop the cork til I know we have a Labour government- not sure if that means I’ll be drinking at 9am instead of 9pm?
In 1997 I could have pulled an all nighter, now if I do that my body will punish me severely so I think I’ll crawl to bed about midnight and see what happens in the morning.

Im still nervous tbh - polls mean nothing, Brexit taught us that.

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 03/07/2024 20:47

HandymcCandy · 03/07/2024 20:33

What happened?

He did a little speech at the end of his broadcast.

Was very poetic!

MaGueule · 03/07/2024 20:48

I hadn’t thought of early morning snack requirements. I’m at a meeting at 9.30am with a large buffet of fresh fruit and pastries. But a 3.30 start might necessitate a 6am bacon sandwich.

While I’ve decided my vote, I’m still a BBC/C4 undecided but will enjoy Nick and Amol on the drive to work (although Michel is my favourite.)

Just found out BIL (who works in Political PR across Europe) has already been signed up for a Tory leadership campaign. He’s hoping they keep their seat - I’m not so sure 😆
