What does MN think? Is this the beginning of the end for the Tories?

Lost 50% of councils they contested.

I don't think anyone is going to be surprised.

Onedayatatime22 · 03/05/2024 08:21

We can only hope 🙏🏼

BIWI · 03/05/2024 08:21

The beginning?!

Growlybear83 · 03/05/2024 08:29

I think the results that are in so far are pretty much in line with what was predicted. Your post makes it sound as though the conservatives didn't contest every seat yesterday - I doubt there is any seat in any of the councils where an election was taking place that didn't have a Tory candidate.

Flyhigher · 03/05/2024 08:50

My bad.

It’s about time! Looking forward to Sunak squirming later !
The fact that BJ had forgotten his ID ,the rule his government enforced to make it harder for plebs to vote sums up the general incompetence of the Tory party…final straw !

Lovingeveryrainbow · 03/05/2024 09:09

Fingers crossed it is. I don’t want Labour to be complacent though, there’s a lot to do before the GE. Leads often shrink closer to the time

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/05/2024 09:12

Really hoping that there’s a serious move to oust Sunak now and he calls a GE.

Sillyjane · 03/05/2024 09:14

It was always going to be bad, the electorate would always give them a bloody nose. But labour hasn’t faired as well as starmer is pretending. Which is interesting. The general election is a different animal.

i would expect them to take sunak out now;

Ah but Sunak has a plan!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 03/05/2024 10:26

Don't get me wrong - I have never voted Tory and think they are toast at the next GE, but... aren't these bog-standard local elections results when a party has been in power for a long time?

minsmum · 03/05/2024 10:33

I am surprised that Labour are not picking up more of the seats that the tories have lost. The BBC is showing 39 independents so far, that must be a worry for Keir Starmer

Local elections always pick up seats for independents because there are often local issues that these independents can stand for (or against).
This feature does not necessarily transfer to national elections.
Also LibDems are picking up seats, highlighting the fact that LibDems are more prominent in local councils than national elections, and also the need for tactical voting at the general election.

minsmum · 03/05/2024 10:42

@shiftingsandsoftime yes you are right of course but the numbers seen quite high to me

idiotfacelicker · 03/05/2024 12:54

As well as the local issues point, many independents will be ex killers that abandoned the Tories, which is why they're taking the Tory vote.

idiotfacelicker · 03/05/2024 12:55

Good gracious. Ex Kippers!!! That should have said.

Shetlands · 03/05/2024 13:53

Nothing I enjoy more on a Friday morning than seeing the Tories being wiped out in elections. Bring on the General Election! 🌹

Ah but Sunak has a plan!

Is it a cunning one? 😉

Runor · 03/05/2024 16:50

A plan so cunning, you could stick a tail on it and call it….. Geoffrey (or something like that)

The conservatives are toast, but what doesn’t seem to be being so widely reported is that Labours showing isn’t all that great either. Splitting the lost Tory seats according to pre-election ratios would see Labour have 177 gains (so far), v actual of 115. The strongest performers are…..the independents, getting 79 extra seats v the expected number of 23 (at time of writing) and the Greens

So unsurprisingly the real story is that voters are pissed off with the Tories, but aren’t that impressed by the other main parties either. Starmer might be enjoying Sunak’s discomfort, but behind the scenes, they know this isn’t a ringing endorsement

Runor · 03/05/2024 16:54

By the same analysis, LibDems are actually down - 44 v expected 57

Newgirls · 03/05/2024 16:59

Tories are almost outnumbered by Lib Dems and Greens. It’s a resounding no confidence vote against Tories. Add in that loads of Tory MPs have said they won’t stand this year for reelection so voters won’t know the candidates or have any loyalties to them. The mayor of Tees seems to be very popular within his community but there will now be fewer of these long standing tories standing.

Agree with your second point. Boris forced most of that type of Tory out, destroying the party to serve his own interests. How very on brand.

Not convinced about a ‘resounding NCV’ though. The governing party tends to get hammered at local elections after it’s been in power a while. I’m sure the Tories will lose the GE, but not because of these results.

Dollenganger333 · 04/05/2024 09:52

In my ward, I've never seen such a long queue of people lining up to vote as I did this time. People definitely want change where I live.

Newgirls · 04/05/2024 18:01

Lib Dems got more councillors than the tories. Ouch.
