A parliamentary committee has decided to act as judge, jury and executioner vis a vis Russell Brand.
First of all, deciding he is guilty of serious criminal allegations without due legal process, or any process whatsoever.
Secondly, deciding to use their influence. as legislators, to seek to strip him of his livelihood.
What has happened to basic legal and constitutional principles, including:-
Separation of powers
Rule of Law
Due process
Presumption of innocence?
Even in the chaos after WWII and the Nazi atrocities committed during that period, steps were taken to ensure due process against alleged war criminals and the alleged perpetrators of crimes against humanity. It was part of the recovery and reconciliation process, and the re-establishing of civilised values, to accord even the vilest of alleged criminals due process.
What has happened to today's influence makers?
One can condemn the alleged crimes committed by Brand (assuming proved);
One can detest the persona and lifestyle which he portrays/has portrayed through various media channels;
One can have speak out against sexual misconduct of all types and support all victims of such behaviour.
However, these things are not inconsistent with the fundamental constitutional and legal principles.
