Well I know she's had a rough couple of weeks but I didn't see that coming.

Nor me but definitely cause for celebration!

Icedlatteplease · 15/02/2023 10:01

As soon as Alex Salmond said her handling of trans issues was damaging the Nationalist cause you knew she was in trouble.

Still surprised she went

BadHabitsGoodFun · 15/02/2023 10:01

😳

BadHabitsGoodFun · 15/02/2023 10:02

Wonder who will replace her!

FuckabethFuckor · 15/02/2023 10:02

Interesting. I'm broadly pro-SNP on most positions but I recognise that they have a succession problem, and have had for a while. It'll be interesting to see if party support drops when a new leader is elected/installed.

Nimbostratus100 · 15/02/2023 10:02

great news!

MarkWithaC · 15/02/2023 10:04

How interesting. How prescient of JK Rowling (and yes, I do think this is largely if not entirely about Isla-gate).
It's true, there is a succession problem and I wonder if they'll find someone who'll have the following Sturgeon has (had).

ShockShockShock Well that backfired most spectacularly didn't it! Thought she would be the saviour of Scottish independence by pitting Westminster against Holyrood, then, bam, Isla...

Farmageddon · 15/02/2023 10:05

Wow, I thought she would hang on for dear life.

MelaniesFlowers · 15/02/2023 10:07

Fantastic news 😃

Hadtochangeforthisone · 15/02/2023 10:09

I actually like her from a bystander point of view. (I live in SE England so she has no direct effect on my life nor can I vote her in or out - although with 4 sets of GP from Scotland, I am always interested in Scottish politics) . However until the recent fuckwittery on the trans front I liked her strong no nonsense direct approach and have a large amount of sympathy for the independence argument.

Someone with better knowledge of Scottish politics ... what is the real reason she's going because like all politicians I expect she will say some guff about spending more time with her family.

Wow! Fantastic news. I've been longing to see the back of her for a good couple of decades. That's made my day!

maddy68 · 15/02/2023 10:10

I hope someone decent can succeed her. The independence movement needs to be strong

Farmageddon · 15/02/2023 10:13

From the sounds of it, there is some dodgy financial dealings that will come out, as per a recent police investigation - so really she is jumping before she is pushed.

I think the trans row has really knocked the stuffing out of her tbh. I think she saw that piece of legislation as her legacy (if independence didn't happen). There was a Panelbase poll at the weekend too that said 42% of Scots wanted her to stand down, which I suspect was a bit like kicking her when she was already down. AFAIK she was already considering when to step down anyway. Being the leader year after year must be pretty exhausting.
