I think some people like to say they hate "wokeness" without thinking what it means.

I consider the homophobia of the "woke" left to be a negative. They consider my alleged transphobia to be a negative. However we could both generally agree on disability access. So who is woke there?

PurpleWisteria1 · 05/12/2022 17:40

Woke to me is someone who has very little real world knowledge / immature/ close minded whilst believing they are very open minded, idealistic without any basis in reality, someone who picks up on the latest supposedly open minded trends and believes them because it’s ‘cool’.
So the opposite would be someone who is learned, wise, grounded in real world reality, experienced with many different types of people and environments, someone who has been round the block many times and has solid foundations on which opinions are formed.

WallaceinAnderland · 05/12/2022 18:23

Woke means that someone who was racist, bigoted, etc. has 'woken up' to injustices and now sees them.

The opposite would be someone who was never racist, bigoted, etc. in the first place.

If your not woke you're Owned

CharlotteSometimes1 · 21/01/2023 19:44

At first glance Woke is about being aware of injustice and all about inclusivity, unfortunately people have taken that too far becoming very black and white about what is and isn’t acceptable. Often without debate, and with repercussions like being cancelled for example. What’s happened now is that often woke is in fact itself intolerant and unjust.

Kingofturves · 24/02/2023 22:23

I don't think that logically follows.
Woke is a state of being awake, alert, perceptive of your surroundings and of what is situationally going on around you.
It is consciousness.
How you interpret your consciousness depends on your reasoning/logical bias as well as personal beliefs whether irrational or rational.
Woke is simply being made away of something.
Probably important for any occasion from driving, getting out of bed, voting, making decisions, etc.
The sleepy tired person must awaken and take note of their surroundings.

Woke definition as per the urban dictionary:

”When this term became popularised, initially the meaning of this term was when an individual become more aware of the social injustice. Or basically, any current affairs related like biased, discrimination, or double-standards.

However, as time passed by, people started using this term recklessly, assigning this term to themselves or someone they know to boost their confidence and reassure them that they have the moral high grounds and are fighting for the better world. And sometimes even using it as a way to protect themselves from other people's opinion, by considering the 'outsider' as non-woke. While people that are in line with their belief as woke. Meaning that those 'outsiders' have been brainwash by the society and couldn't see the truth. Thus, filtering everything that the 'outsider' gives regardless whether it is rationale or not.

And as of now, the original meaning is slowly fading and instead, is used more often to term someone as hypocritical and think they are the 'enlightened' despite the fact that they are extremely close-minded and are unable to accept other people's criticism or different perspective. Especially considering the existence of echo chamber(media) that helped them to find other like-minded individuals, thus, further solidifying their 'progressive' opinion.”

Which based on the current and evolved definition of woke would mean the opposite is ‘open-minded’ - a full circle from what woke started out as.

Woke now has changed from meaning a good, enlightened and tolerant person to an annoying bigot who thinks they are always right and tries to force his/her/it’s views on everyone else.

Circumferences · 19/10/2022 21:30

Woke= bigotry, absolute intolerance of views different to your own, authoritarian, cancel culture, bullying, being unable to form a coherent argument without resorting to insults, a green light for misogynistic and racial abuse towards people who have different opinions, etc.

The opposite to that is normal people. People who are free to think for themselves. The woke hate that.

I would once have been proud to be woke, now I'd be ashamed because circumferences is right. It has come to mean virtue signalling replacing action, intolerance, bigotry, bullying and mysogyny. The modern "woke" are nearer to fascists than those they complain about.

Those who claim to be "woke" are now those who are deliberately blinding themselves to the real problems. So I think the opposite of woke is now realist or attentive. I recommend reading https://www.waterstones.com/book/woke-racism/john-mcwhorter/9781800751446 to understand why opposing meaningless virtue signalling is not racism.

So what you are saying, MAGA is woke?!?

Busybutbored · 02/07/2023 05:09

I think the word has changed. I now think when people say woke they are the same people who say "political correctness gone mad". Often in a mocking tone, generally racist, homophobic, bigots etc. To me now anyone who says something is woke, I would be very wary of!

Busybutbored · 02/07/2023 05:10

I think people now try and use it as an insult, but all they're really doing is exposing their own bigotry

Blimey, so Braverman and the Tories are woke? They are pushing on with Rwanda plans.

karinad104 · 14/07/2023 19:29

@Circumferences the opposite of woke is oblivious to racial and human injustices, i.e. having your head stuck in the sand. You can define the word as you please, but .... there is only one accepted definition for Woke-ism. You're not only dazed with your head in the sand, you aren't literate either.

dubsie · 21/07/2023 10:49

Woke is used to try and divert peoples attention away from our current situation to less relavant issues. Why are we focused on woke when people can't get a dentist or they are struggling to find housing.

Anything this government is unhappy with it aims to pin the blame on a minority or label someone with an opinion that differs from theirs woke.

Once again populism at play and we've seen it across the pond and now it's here

Someone that’s ‘woke’ has their eyes open to inequality and injustices.
Someone who’s ‘not woke’ has their eyes shut to this. Usually because they have some sort of privilege that they don’t want to admit to or discuss. Usually these people will use ‘woke’ as an insult, not realising how ridiculous they sound.

Do you realise how ridiculous you sound by saying that to people who believe in critical thinking and common sense? Current 'woke' trends want everyone to agree in 'gender identity ideology'.

I am sorry but I will never believe that there are more than 2 sexes and it is Orwellian to expect everyone to go along with 'gender woo' just because it is one of the current 'woke' themes.

Yes 'woke' is an inability to see any shades of grey. The interests of LGB people are not the same as the TQ+ people but 'woke' insists that they be force-teamed.

EKeenleyside · 21/07/2023 19:03

I think the antonym might be a one syllable word such as dozed or stupe.
I disagree that the meaning has drifted to the negative. I still think of Politically Correct as a positive, despite the crabbing of bigots who feel they are being cancelled when they are criticized. Opinions such as “You’re not allowed to say XYZ anymore… “ are reflections of inner conscience rather than of police brutality. They simply don’t like being called bigots.
Co-opting an opponent’s terminology does not make the word theirs.
