I think some people like to say they hate "wokeness" without thinking what it means.

Ignorant, close-minded, racist. Asleep to the injustices and issues affecting society.

I'm pretty happy to be called woke.

Tintackedsea · 20/10/2022 10:35

I think I am "woke" in the sense that I acknowledge and see systemic injustices and I reject bigotry. I would never describe myself as woke though in the same way I would never describe myself as politically correct. I think both these terms have connotations of uncritical thinking. They are suggestive of performative gestures rather than genuine action. Neither term began its usage like that of course and the use of these words has certainly been co-opted by the hardline right wing and used as a slur. Perhaps we should reclaim it as we should radical feminist.

Closed mindedness, bigotry, discriminating, racism…
Wokeness or woke doesn’t really mean anything. It’s just a sad way to try and belittle and invalidate people for trying to do the right thing. Its like a kid making fun of another kid for trying hard at school or someone taking the piss out of someone because they choose not to drink on a night out.
It’s a sad world we live in where promoting equality and having awareness and a sense of responsibility for the world around us is considered a negative and something to make fun of people for.
No doubt if the word had existed 50 years ago anyone who was into racial equality or basic gay and women’s rights would have been called woke too.
Why advertise your own bigotry and ignorance by making fun of people that are not? It doesn’t make sense to me.

Do people describe themselves as woke? I've only ever seen it used as an insult but it isn't something I think about so maybe I missed it.

The meaning of 'woke' has drifted. It originally meant something along the lines of becoming aware of social injustice and inequality. Which is not something to be critical of.
However, it's more recent use is critical and encapsulates a loose affiliation of beliefs and ideals that are around social injustice still, but tend to be promulgated by people who are not very willing to consider a bigger picture or other people's perspective. The 'woke' tends to be a bit groupthink.
This lack of common ground then polarises people over issues into very binary positions, thus 'woke' Vs 'bigots'. The truth, as ever, is somewhere between those two positions, depending on your perspective.

I agree with this.

DogandMog · 20/10/2022 11:20

"Based"

ie reality based / aligned.

Men can't be women
Mammals can't change sex
Putting males in female prison wings & hospital wards causes very foreseen problems
Children do best with a stable and secure home life to become psychologically healthy adults
Polluting seas with micro-plastics / toxic waste barrels is harmful to aquatic life and coastal communities

Based people apprehend downstream consequences of human activity, even if it's not "woke" to point it out.

Monoprix · 20/10/2022 11:22

Unwoke? Is there such a word?

BitOutOfPractice · 20/10/2022 11:26

Gammon?

crackofdoom · 20/10/2022 11:41

So I gather that eating tofu is "woke" nowadays?? (always slow on the mark here, as I'm not on Twitter for motives of sanity).

Do you hear that, populations of China and Japan? 😆

IceReckon · 20/10/2022 11:45

ancientgran · 20/10/2022 10:00

So does that mean racism is logical?

Racism isn't an accepted part of society, completely separate issue.
Woke is the kind of people going round chucking paint because they don't like legislation not being fast enough, blocking cars because they need everyone to see how woke they are about climate change, insisting women shouldn't have rights to not have intimate medical treatment done by men if they say they're a woman in their head etc.
It's illogical views, not normal moral awareness.

TambourineOfRepentance · 20/10/2022 11:46

At the moment, nothing, because "woke" has lost any meaning in general discourse.
Suella Braverman talking about "Guardian reading, tofu eating wokerati" is referring to something very different than the Sex and Gender boards on here are when they talk about (for example) the latest publication to print "birthing parent".

Harmreduction97 · 20/10/2022 11:49

In my opinion, the opposite of woke, is woke.
The people who are anti woke, display the exact same traits as those who are woke. If you were describe being woke as a personality.

From a political view point, woke tend to be left wing, care for others, humanitarians. The opposite, nazis

mmmflakycrust81 · 20/10/2022 11:54

Its madness that woke has become an insult.

At best, I would say the opposite is ignorant. More likely, I find people who call themselves anti woke tend to be bigots and the need to feel like they are Very Special and also a fan of conspiracy theories that us sheeple have no idea about.

See also: Brexit, anti vaccine, flat earthers etc

Woke are the anti government, anti vax, extremist vegan/gender stereotype believers etc who think they should be able to impose their views on others through force. It might have originally been started as "being aware of issues" but it's been the extremists for a long time since.

Opposite of woke....
Ignorant
Uneducated
Insensitive
Racist
Xenophobic

Justjoinedforthis · 09/11/2022 06:30

I’m starting a campaign for people to start saying ‘right on’ instead of woke. You can use it positively or negatively!

mach2 · 29/11/2022 19:16

"Woke" has drifted from its original meaning to something approximating "politically correct". I'm not keen on woke as an insult, or as a descriptor of the identitarian madness that seems to have gripped a part of the left

Kassiopeia · 05/12/2022 17:21

Pisspants says "I would say opposites are either closed minded or ignorant. It's a shame wokism has become part of the culture wars really as I don't know why anyone wouldnt want to be woke when those are the alternatives!"

The opposite of woke isn't closed-minded or ignorant, if you're talking about gender ideology the so-called 'woke ones' are the ones who deny science and biology, think humans can change sex and that men are women if they say they are.

I agree that 'wokism' has become part of the culture though - the part that intimidates and threatens women who won't agree, gets women sacked and cancelled yet they claim to be the reasonable ones - whilst refusing to debate any issues around gender ideology, ignorance and having closed minds is their signature.

I am highly suspicious of any group that demands complete compliance with their ideology, it's the behaviour of a cult.

I guess it's like the anti-fascists whose behaviours meet all definitions of "fascist"?

For me the answer depends on which "version" of woke you mean. Some use it to mean those who are on the "right side" of social issues; aware of racism/homophobia/feminism/disability/green issues etc, but then others use it as an insult to the vegan lentil weavers. Both have different opposites.

No.. they are your alternatives. Not the alternatives many people would agree with.

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 05/12/2022 17:34

And that's without considering that you can be "woke" (in general opinion) on one issue, while "bigoted"/"correct" (depending also on whether it's a descriptor or an insult...) on another.
