To wonder what made Liz Truss become a Tory

Considering her family were Liberal Democrat's and she was taken at a young age to Ban the Bomb marches etc . I wonder what changed her views . Apparently she is an admirer of Margaret Thatcher. Total polar opposite to how she was brought up .

@Ganymedemoon
She has appointed Hunt to do the turnaround! He’s already moved to calm markets.

I know, that's pretty much implied in my post. Turnaround, U turn. Political careerist etc

I think she still a Lib Dem, but working undercover to sabotage the Tory party.

Has crossed my mind!

IndiGlowie · 15/10/2022 14:54

She didn't get to where she is by being a people pleaser.

If she was Lib dem she wouldn’t have lowered taxes. That’s not their policy. Except going back on NI increases as they fall solely on working people and don’t increase with higher earnings. Labour just want everything paid for by higher taxation for some people but they tend to be the people who drive the economy and higher earning public workers. So they get pissed off and go abroad.

That idea popped into my mind too!!

Truss is a Libertarian at heart. They go across the traditional left-right divide.
At worst Libertarians celebrate selfishness. Look at stuff Scott Adams has said about why he supports Trump (Adams likes Trump's tax policies & how they protect wealth of people like Adams).

Kwartang is also a Libertarian.
Am I the only wondering what Kwartang is doing now? Had he actually moved in to #11 & is now hastily moving out ?

Rory Stewart tells a few stories what it was like being a junior minister under Truss as the senior departmental minister... he talks about the experience on a personal level, how she managed people. What I got from those anecdotes was that Truss is extraordinarily arrogant. So is Kwartang, quite arrogant. This is why they thought announcing their tax plans the way they did would be fine. They couldn't conceive of risk factors they didn't already know about, or that anyone pointing out hazards (like Sunak) was possibly right. They won't listen to people who aren't already in their mindset/fan club.

Some people don't value stability.

Abhannmor · 15/10/2022 18:21

Don't mean to derail but....does anyone else think she has some cognitive impairment. Or is on medication. Or both.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone. But she has looked so lost and confused in her last few appearance?

You could be forgiven for thinking that!

I suspect that it's actually some sort of weirdly delayed teenage rebellion that she never quite managed to grow out of. I suspect daddy issues.

Thick or evil, take your pick

Friend and me have discussed and compared her to a number of managers we've had the burden of bearing in 70 years+ (combined) in local government, frontline social care. Ambition is all, scruples are nil. The thing is, people like that are terribly overpromoted because they will sing from whatever hymn sheet benefits them, toady to whoever they need to and NEVER rock the boat. The people with real principles and ability don't get so much of a look in, because they are prepared to stand up and tell the truth.

Truss is an extreme political example and I very much want to see her undone. I did a straw poll among some of my aged Lefty friends (socialist, not New Labour) and we've all confessed to uttering the words "At least Thatcher..." recently, which is really incredible knowing the backgrounds. That is how bad it is.

Good point. I suspect she might not have been long ago, but as part of her transition she picked up think-tankery libertarianism and a dose of inflated self-belief.

Totally agree with this in fact I said exactly this to a friend yesterday. I grew up under Thatcher and I am a committed socialist, she was of course, the most hated politician by people like me, and still is. The thing is though that she had sincere beliefs, a whole ideology she was totally committed to. Truss just blows with the wind and tries to present herself as a strong unbending leader with a belief system too. But she’s simply a Machiavellian. Yes I miss many leaders of the past of all parties.

Croque · 15/10/2022 18:45

She is dreadful, just dreadful. I doubt she knows the answer to that herself. I doubt she is a deep enough thinker to have arrived at Toryism through some deep-seated conviction. It could literally be to do with who she was shagging at the time. I have never held a celebration relating to politics (and although I am not in a joyous mood like most) I will certainly be doing so when she goes.

I may even dress up as her for Halloween.

Her family were left wing not Lib Dem? She was a Lib Dem as a student.

my working theory is that she’s one of those people pleasers who goes with the crowd. Turned herself into a Tory because that’s what most of her peers were doing. Probably surrounded herself with a load of free market types and got caught up in that.

Hasn’t actually spent much time really exploring politics is my guess.

This.

As she was also a remainer conservative at one time too and is now completely in love with the ERG conservative politics.

Unforgettablefire · 15/10/2022 19:15

TizerorFizz · 14/10/2022 21:05

was she a Lib Dem member? I thought she was at one time. She actually protested against Mrs Thatchers policies. Now says Mrs T was her heroine!

She bends to the latest trends and ideas that give her a platform to get to the top. She’s good on student politics but hasn’t greater depth of thought! She obviously lies!

There's a video of her floating about in her younger days saying we should get rid of all the royal family.
She's a chameleon.

TizerorFizz · 16/10/2022 08:55

@Unforgettablefire
Yrs. I agree with you.

Her press conference was dreadful. I know an earlier poster said she looked dreadful but I think she’s scared. There comes a time when rhetoric isn’t enough. You have to do the job and she’s finding it tough. No surprise there but you have to be equipped to do it.

Ome big issue she has is that the Conservatives are not united. They have not been since Brexit raised its head in the 90s. Various leaders have found them disunited and split into factions. They now openly disagree with each other. The only thing that unites them is wanting power. But they cannot agree what that looks like.

Labour will struggle too. We have so many issues needing attention. Truss is right that we need growth in the economy but you cannot ruin people on the way there. Interest rates will go up again soon and no government will find that easy to manage.

Truss also made promises she couldn’t keep because they were not costed. Our financial situation is far worse than 2010. So where was the money coming from? The markets spooked because it was more borrowing. I agree with others that she’s arrogant and doesn’t listen. She might be forced to now but the Tory MPs won’t put up with her for long. They now have a taste for blood snd they chose Sunak. Expect to see changes to the election process to lessen the impact of members.
