Why don't people condemn the U.S. like they condemn Russia

Genuine question.

So many of U.S. invasions have been entirely strategic. Look at Afghanistan for example. Many of their invasions caused a huge amount of death and devastation and was largely about securing resources or a strategic region.

Russia is invading Ukraine because they don't have the assurances it won't join NATO & doesnt want the possibility of sharing its border with a NATO backed country in close proximity (e.g. USA could build a base there) and Russia is generally concerned about its diminishing influence there.

Why are people so willing to condemn Russia (rightly) in a way that the U.S should have been condemned continuously, or is there a key difference I'm missing!

Russia is not invading Ukraine because of NATO

Russia invaded parts of Ukraine previously with ‘little green men’, Ukraine has been applying for NATO support since it was invaded

Russia is invading Ukraine because it lost a puppet leader in Ukraine and wants to be its own nation - not bowing down to Putin as if the USSR still existed

The US were condemned for wars over oil

I do and have vehemently

The U.K. is no better either. The mark we have left of the world is a fucking disgrace.

People do. Whether you chose to notice it or not is down to you.
I recall vast protests before Iraq. Huge furore around Afghanistan...

Onionpatch · 27/02/2022 09:26

Have you read 'why are we the good guys'

The media doesn't...

The public doesn't call for sanctions, or athletes to be banned from participation or "non political" sporting organisations to make political statements against U.S., or freezing worldwide assets of U.S. billionaires... and the list goes on.

The U.S. doesn't deny a country's existence and plan to incorporate its territory.

And NATO was just an excuse for Putin. He's been dreaming of reconstituting the empire for a long time.

The US has got involved in wars it couldn’t win and caused a lot of damage. But what Russia is doing is of another order all together. It has invaded a country to completely appropriate it.

For the US to do some equal to Russia, it would have to March into Mexico or Canada, declaring it not a real country with the intention of incorporating it into the US. And do so by indiscriminately shelling population centres.

I am so sick of this whattaboutery. Lots of people protested against the Iraq war 2.0 and we didn’t get arrested for it.

OppsUpsSide · 05/03/2022 00:19

That’s a bit like asking why some countries are in support of/don’t condemn Russia isn’t it? I’m sure it’s not all that hard to work out…

Totally agree, so tired of it. I am sure had Mumsnet existed 80 odd years ago there would have been people saying "but Suedetenland, but ethnic Germans"

Do you agree with what Putin has done, OP? Because all the faults and failings of the US/EU/UK/NATO do not justify it.
