'I've seen no evidence of blackmailing' really isn't the same as 'There's been no blackmailing'.

This time last week he'd "seen no evidence" of parties. Now we known he'd been to them.
I don't trust a word that comes out of his mouth.

Perhaps there will be an ‘enquiry’ and we’ll all have to wait for the outcome. Boris won’t be able to comment in the meantime.

They saw no evidence of Russian interference at the election, then the investigation (quietly buried) pointed out, they hadn't actually looked.

Some people see no evidence all the time. When the evidence is provided, they dispute that it is evidence. It can be an abusive tactic.

This is an absolutely deliberate turn of phrase from the Prime Minister - who is a well known admirer of Lord Nelson amongst other historical figures.

He is well educated, cunning and knows exactly what he is doing by playing the buffoon. The image of somebody haplessly blundering from one disaster to the next is exactly the defence he will rely on should he ever get into real political or legal trouble.

'I've seen no evidence' is a reference (that Boris assumes we plebs wont recognise) to Horatio Nelson's quote of 'I see no ships' as he held the telescope to his blind eye and wilfully disobeyed his superior officers instructions.

That's true, but you have to remember: You can't prove a negative.

This from a man who doesn’t know he is attending a party unless someone tells him.
