Dead kids in the US - future of the NHS?

Saltoftheearthmum · 28/11/2019 19:20

I was in tears earlier today. I saw an article about how so many diabetic kids in the US have died in the last month because their families couldn't afford insulin. It's inhumane that the richest country on earth allows kids and poor people to suffer without proper healthcare coverage.

We now know that Tories plan on giving US pharma access to the NHS if they win this election: are these stories from the US our future? How evil must our government be to risk lives like this? To barter the lives of our kids?!

This is what awaits us if we vote the Tories in again or am I wrong??

We really don't know that at all. It may be true but we've not seen any proof of it yet, I'm a lib dems voted btw.

Tolleshunt · 28/11/2019 19:25

I really really hope you are wrong.

It’s awful, those poor kids and their families. Dying for the ‘crime’ of being poor. And in one of the richest nations on earth.

Purplewithred · 28/11/2019 19:32

I may be being thick but what do you think is going to happen? I find the US healthcare system abhorrent too, but what exactly is going to suddenly dismantle the NHS and put us in a position where healthcare has to be privately funded?

HelloCheeky · 28/11/2019 19:35

Of course it will happen if the Tories get in and Brexit happens. Of course it will! How else will it be funded if rich people don't pay higher taxes and the number of staff from the EU plummets leading to staff shortages and upward pressure on salaries.

I always felt proud to be British. Now I am in despair.

By the way. Did you know that 13 states in the US have no minimum age for marriage? UNICEF regards marriage under 18 as child marriage and a violation of human rights. The USA and Sudan are the only countries in the world not to have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. And we want to leave the EU and cuddle up with the US?

RaymondStopThat · 28/11/2019 19:37

I'm confused. Why would we be buying insulin from America?

doadeer · 28/11/2019 19:41

It's very scary. I've heard families are stockpiling insulin now in the UK

Lordamighty · 28/11/2019 19:42

FFS how many more of these scare stories are you people going to troll out?

Saltoftheearthmum · 28/11/2019 19:44

Love him or hate him but thank God for Jeremy Corbyn. The man cares about our public services, working people and mum's like us. The Tories will sell our NHS given the chance and I wouldn't trust the Lib Dems Cake to look after my cat, let alone the NHS, after what they did in government with the Conservatives. I'll never forget the 130,000 dead as a result of austerity.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 28/11/2019 19:50

Thank God for Jeremy Corbyn

He will save us all

And long live all the Momentum bots!

Saltoftheearthmum · 28/11/2019 19:55

People are allowed different views to you, you know that right?

OP posts:
peoplearepeople · 28/11/2019 19:57

I hear you op. My child is a type 1 diabetic and has been since they were a baby. Life seems to be a constant worry for us at the moment with Brexit and now this.
Sadly I don't think many people actually care, or understand just how serious a disease type 1 diabetes is. They equate it with an old aunt or someone they once knew who was type 2 and had to have sugar free jam or some rubbish. (nothing against type 2's, I know it's also misunderstood) There is so much ignorance about the condition.
I could rant for ages, but really am so tired of it all.

doadeer · 28/11/2019 19:58

Momentum bots? There are certainly a lot of Boris bots. Every thread I read on here is criticising Corbyn. If only such attention was given to the actual manifestos!

Scotinthenorth · 28/11/2019 19:59

Scaremongering yet again. Sick to the back teeth of labour banging on about the NHS. It’s all they’ve got. It will never go fully private and Labour knows this but they need to keep on saying it because they have nothing else and all you Labour voters lap it right up. It’s baffling.

Tolleshunt · 28/11/2019 20:04
  • It will never go fully private What do you base that on? You sound pretty confident.
RaymondStopThat · 28/11/2019 20:05

It's very scary. I've heard families are stockpiling insulin now in the UK

Have you really Hmm Presumably they are buying it from illegal sources because the NHS prescription system wouldn't allow you to stockpile it. You get enough for your requirements.

Lessthanzero · 28/11/2019 20:05

I have a disabled child and I am terrified.

We already struggle to get the support, treatment and aids that he needs. How much worse is it going to get.

All the Conservative voters better hope they never need social care or NHS treatment. You only find out how underfunded they are when you need them. And anyone can end up needing them. Bad luck can come to anyone, no one is invincible. But don't worry as long as your house price keeps going up it'll all be OK. The gov will take your house if you need old age care, but let's not think about that.

stucknoue · 28/11/2019 20:06

What people don't realise is that people die and are bankrupted in the us because of the healthcare system, but more commonly people don't get access to the decent modern drugs. If us pharma companies are allowed to increase prices those of us are are reliant on expensive drugs will find we cannot access them, they are already rationed despite strong negotiating

RaymondStopThat · 28/11/2019 20:10

Interesting bots are being mentioned. There were some leaked WhatsApps the day before yesterday about how Labour were planning to flood the internet to deflect attention from Corbyn and the terrible interview with Andrew O'Neil. I'm no Tory, this is the worst choice of leaders ever, but it really isn't as simple as the NHS will thrive under Labour, and it's being flogged to orange Donald under the Tories.

Saltoftheearthmum · 28/11/2019 20:14

Exactly. Health isn't a business or at least it shouldn't be. Why are we risking it all by empowering millionaires to run services they don't even use?

I remember my DS being born and the wonderful experience we had from nurse and doctors in the NHS. Imagine if there was differing levels of service based on how much money you have. How many mums and babies would be at risk? That's what the Tories want...

Labour has to win this

OP posts:
Saltoftheearthmum · 28/11/2019 20:15

So true :(

OP posts:
Saucery · 28/11/2019 20:19

Differing levels of maternity services? Like in Morecambe Bay and Shropshire and Telford?

What a ridiculous goady thread with a repulsive title.

MrsFogi · 28/11/2019 20:19

My goodness OP newly joined and only posting about politics and pro-labour! If I was cynical I would start to think that the politicians were taking mners for idiots and thinking that somehow we would decide how to vote based on a few threads on mn Hmm. Perhaps the parties should take a look at how many women are going to vote "none of the above" and think about why they are so pissed off a few examples of threads and a pretty picture from my European Election ballot.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/11/2019 20:19

I don't think anyone thinks its simple. They can see what 10 years of austerity have done to the NHS. They can see these elaborate schemes - in my area at least - to prepare the NHS to be divided up. They can listen to the consultants, midwives, doctors etc, begging people not to vote Cons. They know there are not enough staff - they know that Brexit has and will make things far, far worse. They know we rely on much time-sensitive medicine from the EU. And medical supplies from the EU. They understand what a vote for Cons means.
