Dead kids in the US - future of the NHS?

Saltoftheearthmum · 28/11/2019 19:20

I was in tears earlier today. I saw an article about how so many diabetic kids in the US have died in the last month because their families couldn't afford insulin. It's inhumane that the richest country on earth allows kids and poor people to suffer without proper healthcare coverage.

We now know that Tories plan on giving US pharma access to the NHS if they win this election: are these stories from the US our future? How evil must our government be to risk lives like this? To barter the lives of our kids?!

This is what awaits us if we vote the Tories in again or am I wrong??

People really like and are proud of what the conservatives are doing to the country though.
What can you do?

dontalltalkatonce · 28/11/2019 20:20

It's already happening here! Kids with cancer die all the time from not being able to get adequate treatment here and delays in diagnosis. Plenty of drugs are hard to get hold of already. It will get worse with another Tory government.

MsRomanoff · 28/11/2019 20:27

Why is everyone pretending that the NHS was great under labour?

Saltoftheearthmum · 28/11/2019 20:29

It's a shame that a mum can't join mumsnet and talk about politics without criticism and suspicion. It's sad.

Eh? This isn't an Agree with Me or You're Shit forum, no place is. I'm not a Tory voter, but you're fooling yourself if you think lives are not already been lost and risked under the NHS.

MsRomanoff · 28/11/2019 20:35

The country is in the shit. I dislike the Tories.

However, labour didnt want to get in. Because they knew this hair storm was coming
So Tony Blair passed the job to Gordon brown. They knew gordon brown was unelectable.

They didnt want to deal with the fallout of their fuck ups. They knew they could sit in the sidelines claiming 'we would have done this better'. When they were the ones that led us into shit and too cowardly to deal with the fallout.

Gordon brown was an horrendous Chancellor. Worse PM. His claims he didnt are the ressession coming? I could. I was in the US in the January. You could see what was happening and I am no economic expert. Me and exh came home and started making plans. Ensured financea were in order, mortgage would be ok.

And yet the bloody government disnr see it coming, apparantly. Normal people could, but they couldnt?

I don't believe for one minute things would be better under labour at the moment.

They are all a shower of shit.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/11/2019 20:38

people really do think boris is a good man and they trust boris to get us out of europe, get a brilliant trade deal with america and there will be all these new hospitals and no tax rises.

sqirrelfriends · 28/11/2019 20:41

This makes me really sad, insulin shouldn't be anywhere as expensive as it is but the companies have a monopoly on production and can basically charge what they like. It makes me feel sick thinking about what those parents have and are still going through.

People complain about the UK, but we are so lucky to live in a country that for the most part takes care of its people (there are exceptions of course). Unfortunately, I don't see it lasting and welfare has already slipped so much.

LapisJewel · 28/11/2019 20:43

The NHS, and society, would be immeasurably better under Labour rule, just look at the policies.

The is overwhelming evidence The Tories would let Big Pharma in, eg protection of the NHS is not legally binding in Johnson's deal (as it was in May's), 10 meetings with Big Pharma, and Labour getting a hold of hundreds of pages of unredacted documents that detail the talks between the tories and big pharma.

I work as a Doctor in the NHS- please vote Labour (or tactically, or just not for the Tories).

itsnotperfectbutwellgetthere · 28/11/2019 20:47

Don’t stress, OP.

The NHS isn’t going anywhere.

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 28/11/2019 20:52

Love him or hate him but thank God for Jeremy Corbyn. The man cares about our public services, working people and mum's like us

This is so cringe. At least try to be a little bit subtle with your propaganda.

Of course it will happen if the Tories get in and Brexit happens. Of course it will! How else will it be funded if rich people don't pay higher taxes and the number of staff from the EU plummets

You do realise people from the EU will still be allowed in this country after Brexit? We'll still be able to employ people from other countries!

electricwhisk · 28/11/2019 20:56

No politician from any UK political party has ever suggested replacing the NHS with a US health care model.

Stooshie8 · 28/11/2019 21:03

Labour supporter spreading more twaddle !!

RaymondStopThat · 28/11/2019 21:16

Love him or hate him but thank God for Jeremy Corbyn. The man cares about our public services, working people and mum's like us

Unless you are Jewish if course, or a woman who cares about keeping safe spaces for women. And who on earth are 'women like us'? We're all individuals with differing incomes, family circumstances and wish lists for any incoming government

Are you really so naive to think he (or any politician) cares about you?

Besidesthepoint · 28/11/2019 21:23

It's very scary. I've heard families are stockpiling insulin now in the UK

Have you really Presumably they are buying it from illegal sources because the NHS prescription system wouldn't allow you to stockpile it. You get enough for your requirements.

@RaymondStopThat

You clearly do not know what you are talking about. You cannot give an exact prescription for insulin because people eat different amounts of carbs every day so it's more of an estimate. Also, when you get sick you need more insulin. Type 1 is very different from type 2. It is possible to stockpile by eating less carbs or asking for an earlier prescription. They don't ask you to proove how many carbs you ate daily over the last two months or so.

sqirrelfriends · 28/11/2019 21:23

I fear for this country if Corbyn/Labour get into power. That man is a misogynistic, racist fool who happens to live in fairy land. His policies would bankrupt this country and would probably send us into another recession when everyone stops spending money as it's being taxed away.

Can't stand Boris either.

dontalltalkatonce · 28/11/2019 21:26

Well, I'm an atheist so I'm not going to be thanking any deity for the existence of Jeremy Corbyn! Get real, he's a politician. And it's 'mums' not 'mum's', that's possessive. Not voting Labour myself but also not a Tory voter.

RaymondStopThat · 28/11/2019 21:30

Of course it will happen if the Tories get in and Brexit happens. Of course it will! How else will it be funded if rich people don't pay higher taxes and the number of staff from the EU plummets

I'm afraid rich people paying more taxes won't pay enough to put the NHS right. We have an increasing population, increasing elderly population and an obesity epidemic (the effects of which are yet to be fully felt). Money should be being directed into Public Health (which isn't party of the NHS these days) to prevent illnesses and develop a healthy population for starters. That will help the NHS immensely in the longer term. And the reality is, we'll ALL have to pay more if we want to keep the NHS

Foodtheif · 28/11/2019 21:34

As a parent of a type 1 diabetic threads like this really scare me. 😢

RaymondStopThat · 28/11/2019 21:36

So you're saying people are lying or changing their diets to fool the NHS into giving them additional drugs? Really?

Well that'll really help the NHS drug budget won't it, when all that stockpiled insulin expires and has to be binned. Or there'll be shortages because people's fridges are full of insulin and those who actually need it at the time can't get any...

dontalltalkatonce · 28/11/2019 21:48

Well that'll really help the NHS drug budget won't it, when all that stockpiled insulin expires and has to be binned.

Or sell it to the highest bidder on the black market.

TheRightHonerable · 28/11/2019 22:02

IDK I think your OP is a bit overly dramatic but my sibling type 1 so trust me I see it from both sides.

No child should be left to die- obviously.

However, the level of entitlement in this country makes me sick. Two of my best friends are nurses and the abuse they get working in A&E from drunk ‘rough’ (their word not mine) idiots is appalling.

Whilst it’s not a class issue it is I’m afraid a result of the NHS being a free service. If people had to pay for treatment it would massively disadvantaged those who couldn’t afford it but it would no doubt reduce the exploitation and abuse the NHS currently suffers. People say ‘there are better ways to tackle it’ but implementing them is expensive with no available budget and none have worked so far.

I read a thread just tonight, an angry mother felt the gov were in the wrong as after paying car finance, sky and mobile bills they were going to be left with £14 for Christmas - she was a SAHM to 3 kids and DP only worked 24 hours as wanted to ‘maximise benefits’ 🙄 Maybe instead of worrying about what might potentially happen to the NHS at some point under the conservatives - we all worry about the very real social exploitation happening already and how this will escalate under labour / who seem to want to give everything to everyone without any solid plans of how to fund it all 👍🏻

‘Rich/ middle class people...grrrrr’ - That’s not a financial plan I’m afraid.

Besidesthepoint · 28/11/2019 22:11

So you're saying people are lying or changing their diets to fool the NHS into giving them additional drugs? Really?

@RaymondStopThat

No people are trying to have enough in their fridge so they don't have to be taken to hospital when they run out. Your way of thinking would costs lives and much more money. You can't predict the exact day when you run out. It's not like a daily pill that you take. You might need a shot of 15 for one dinner and a shot of 25 for the carb heavy dinner the next day. Maybe you should educate yourself a bit about this. A type 1 diabetic who runs out of insulin is in danger of a coma, death or damage to eyes and kidneys among other things. These are all problems that costs the NHS much more money than a little insulin and fucks up lives. Plus the insulin doesn't go bad so quickly so they just use it up but try to keep a little stash ahead of them at all times. Having a few week stash prevents such problems. Maybe you should look up the cost of insulin versus a kidney transplant.

RaymondStopThat · 28/11/2019 22:14

Having enough insulin to meet clinical needs is entirely different from stockpiling. And you know that.

I've been involved in many renal transplants so am fully aware of their cost.

Tolleshunt · 28/11/2019 22:25

It’s amazing how often it happens on MN, that the minute somebody is backed into a corner, they magically turn out to have a niche expertise at the coal face of the issue under debate.
