Irish Border and Brexit

So I'm new to discussing Brexit, or even thinking about the monumental mistake that it is for those outside London. Sorry peeps, I've always believed Brexit or no Brexit, London will be fine (famous last wordsBlush).

Anyway last week I was left with one question. How can we have Brexit, with the a soft Irish Border?

Surely the whole point of Brexit is to stop the easy access to the country (alright, alright, I'm sure many voted for sovereignty and sovereignty alone oh and the several hundred million to the NHS (chinny reckonHmm)).

But seriously how does it work. If you voted for Brexit, did you consider that? And if you didn't how do we work to get that sorted? Because, it doesn't seem to me, that Brexit can mean what was voted for by many if, Europe has what will, inevitably, be easy access.

And as I write this I imagined that GB is like the human body and the EU is like a disease that spreads, once infected, it's not simply a case of cutting it out, and no surgeon is talented enough to deal with it.

Everyone I know discussed Brexit to death before the vote and not one single person mentioned Ireland. I am a staunch remainer as are most of my friends, that said I can't get a soul to engage on the topic now. It really is the elephant in the room esp with leavers that I know.

Sadly a lot of leave voters forgot that NI even exists, hence the mess we have now. I think a lot of people in the UK are/were unaware of what actually went on during the Troubles, what life is like in NI today and how utterly unacceptable a hard border would be. Totally uninformed voting.

There is a huge amount of discussion on this and other Brexit related matters over on the Brexit section of Mumsnet. Come & join us. Sometimes it gets a little heated but there is a great deal of information and opinion posted.

This is a good thread to start with: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_/3311061-What-is-the-solution-to-the-Irish-border
