Bi-lateral agreement with France over Calais border control

I saw on local tv news we have paid France £43m to allow us to keep(and presumably staff) the Calais border. This is a lot of money.
Not very happy about this

What do you want to happen instead?

SolaceOfYou · 01/02/2018 23:38

So France should let us keep our border on their soil for free..?

I thought we were leaving the EU and as such were going to be in control of our own borders. I thought the whole idea of Brexit was that the costs etc of Eu membership would be reduced . No mention was made in the Leave campaign that we would be paying millions to keep a border in Calais If we have to continue to make more bi-lateral agreements like this then where is the point of leaving the EU as it will end up costing the same as membership?

France are doing us a favour by keeping the border on their side, whether we pay for it or not.

The costs of maintaining it on our side would be much higher.

And OF COURSE Brexit means we're going to have to 'pay our own way'. You can't have it both ways.

We are getting a deal on this!

Without the Calais border illegal migrants could get on to trains and ships using forged id documents and would only be detained once they had arrived in UK and their forgeries were spotted by the border agency.

The cost of building and running additional detention centres, hearing asylum claims, deportation appeals etc would far exeed the sums we are paying to the French.

Once we have left the EU we will no longer be bound by the Dublin agreements which determine that an asylum seeker must have their case heard in the forst EU country they arrived in. So there will be no more automatic returns.

Actually if I were the French I would use the flow of asylum seekers to put pressure on the UK in exactly the way Erdogan has used it.

Guess we have to be happy that Macron is a decent man.

We already had control over our boarders.

If you have a problem with mass immigration of Pakistanis, would you rather that we waited till they came to the UK and then dealt with the issue on here, or stopped them before they got there?
