Trumps Tweets

What did Trump mean by "North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S. It won't happen!"?
Was he deriding North Korea's manufacturing capability - which has been somewhat unreliable, but may not remain so, or was he saying that North Korea would be stopped?

It's very hard to tell what he ever means with such short statements. He's had an 'interesting' Christmas with his tweets. He promised that if he got elected he would hardly ever use social media. Funny sort of restraint he's showing.

Yes, because it shows how great he was in the Apprentice. The best. Nobody can ever compare favourably to him.

Donald J. Trump ‏@realDonaldTrump 10 Dec 2016
I have NOTHING to do with The Apprentice except for fact that I conceived it with Mark B & have a big stake in it. Will devote ZERO TIME!

Well ... apart from the time he's going to spend tweeting about Arnie:

Wow, the ratings are in and Arnold Schwarzenegger got "swamped" (or destroyed) by comparison to the ratings machine, DJT. So much for...

Donald J. Trump ‏@realDonaldTrump 4h4 hours ago
being a movie star-and that was season 1 compared to season 14. Now compare him to my season 1. But who cares, he supported Kasich & Hillary

You would have thought he might have better things to do today ... like meeting with the intelligence agencies, but no, he's sounding off about The Apprentice and Vogue Hmm

Lweji · 06/01/2017 16:48

But who cares, he supported Kasich & Hillary

It still hurts. Particularly because Arnie is a Republican.

what were the ratings for season 13, BTW?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/01/2017 16:55

I think its the old 'look over there' ploy.
Sorry, even the media arent falling for that one this time.

And being dropped by NBC as host of The Apprentice hurt too:

In 2015, when Trump was fourteen years into the run of The Apprentice, NBC announced that it was removing him as host of the program “due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants.” (In reply, Trump blasted the network, saying it was “so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem.”)

Lweji · 06/01/2017 17:02

I hadn't realised he had been sacked.
I thought it was due to his candidacy and then election.

Do you think Lord Sugar could help a bit? :)

InformalRoman · 06/01/2017 17:05

Season 14 (last Trump season) peaked at 6.98 million viewers according to Wiki. Arnie got 4.93 million viewers for his opening show (Trump season 14 opening show got 6.31).

Lweji · 06/01/2017 17:07

That's why he compared it to Season 1. Because lately the ratings weren't that great anyway.

I am asking the chairs of the House and Senate committees to investigate top secret intelligence shared with NBC prior to me seeing it.

I imagine the response will be that the CIA were hoping that by putting the report in the news that he'd pay attention to it.
Maybe they should have tweeted it to him

Kaija · 06/01/2017 17:43

Interesting tweets by Emily Bell on how the way to understand Trump is to look at him as a media organisation:

  1. Without wishing to draw more attention to Trump tweets, I do think that the only framing for him that works is as a media organization
  1. He is ratings-driven in all respects, (as someone who is actually a tv star would be ). He a/b tests all policies/statements/cabinet
  1. Bannon is important as a head of strategy because actually what Trump needs is not actual political strategy but an editor-in-chief
  1. Trump has also swallowed to digital media playbook -'authenticity', engagement, merging online presence w/offline events, personal brand
  1. We've been talking for a decade, glibly, about how 'all organizations are media organizations ' . Well, here it is.
  1. As @jayrosen_nyu talked about 'a different kind of candidate' we have a different kind of President - not a politician but a media outlet
  1. Perhaps TV reviewers should be assigned the White House beat. @emilynussbaum stand by
  1. The Medium is the Office. This is the age we have entered
  1. And finally - smart of him to get Peter Thiel onside early..because he is the default regulator of media these days

Yes, true. As an employee of a research institution even I've had media training and we have people who deal with media relationships.
A few years ago all we cared about were scientific journals. Now even scientific projects have websites and twitter accounts. Shock

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/01/2017 20:19

that's interesting Kaija, there's more to it of course, but he really is a character created out of media in essence.

The Anna Wintour tweet is also bizarre.
I'm sure it has to do with his fashion magazine obsession, but still...

This Twitter thing does feel like birdwatching.
I'd love it if the BBC Grin created a show with David Attenborough's comments about those tweets.

Lweji · 06/01/2017 22:25

Ups, maybe not. He seems to have said that it wouldn't be a bad idea to shoot Trump.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2017 20:21

my reply didn't post, but no idea what I wrote!

A string of tweets today about working with Russia.

It is impressive at how he is assiduously ignoring the contents of the report. I do wonder at what he needs to do to end up being impeached.

OP posts:
Kaija · 07/01/2017 23:17

It isn't getting any better:

thehill.com/policy/national-security/313123-intel-experts-worry-trump-will-go-rogue

Lweji · 07/01/2017 23:27

It's a dangerous path, because the CIA's conclusion that Trump was helped to power by a foreign government will never, and I suspect it could never, be accepted by that winner.
He'd basically have to recognise that he is an unworthy winner, possibly a faudulent winner (even if can be assumed he didn't actually ask for it).
It's a no win situation. If the CIA don't transmit their conclusions, it leaves the door open for further messing about. If they persist on accusing Russia, and claiming they influenced the elections, they'll alienate their own future boss.
Not sure what's the way out.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2017 10:58

Thanks for the links Kaija, I suspect he would prefer to analyse the data himself rather than have the intelligence agencies do it, I think he may find it difficult to trust people he hasn't personally appointed to do the job for him.

He is in a no win situation. Especially with his personality. I keep thinking back to Nixon.

Oh yes, so agree kitten

“We can already see we have a president-elect who has difficulty with facts that are at odds with the narrative that he wants to tell or diminish his achievements. there is also plenty of precedent for a president who wants to cherry-pick information to advance his own policies. "

That's Trump to a T isn't it....

Lweji · 09/01/2017 14:07

Most people tend to read his tweets with Trump's "voice".

But Luke Skywalker has now started doing a Joker version (for whatever reason).
It sounds really scary.

And now Meryl Streep is overrated :)

He retweeted something about Russia's hacking not having interfered with the election.
He does have a point. All the hacked emails ended up not harming Hillary that much. It was the FBI who nailed it.

Can anyone remember? It was my impression that the RNC had been hacked too, but nothing released.

And again a sore winner, still calling Hillary names. Just pathetic.

Roussette · 09/01/2017 14:35

Love a tweet I've just read...

"If all famous people can constantly criticise Trump for the next four years, he'll be too busy ranting on Twitter to kill us all"

Trump's a pillock. Calling Meryl overrated... doesn't he realise she's already won three Oscars... she's wonderful and he's dim.
