A parallel thread to the other one that is running.

So far early voting is running at a record high. Looks like they are favouring Clinton at present. High Latino turnout. Overall the polls have tightened though and I think that many are in their margin of error.

I'm in New Zealand so we will start getting results mid-late afternoon here, at least we don't have to pull all nighters like you Brits and my work will be pretty generous in letting us check results throughout the day.

I'm no fan of either, aside from anyone is better than Trump. I do want Hilary to win because at least she has experience in running a country and economists here are warning that our NZ economy could go into meltdown if Trump gets in as we rely so much on Free Trade. And I can imagine the pound will surge as well. It would be a complete nightmare on all world markets :(

Breadandwine · 07/11/2016 02:18

Hi Thunder - nice to hear things from a NZ perspective.

We're all holding our breath over here (don't know anyone who supports Trump). You'll have to give us the reaction from there to the results as they come in.

There's nothing more to say about Trump, but I've heard several sources say that Hillary is disliked when she's running for office, but begin to warm to her once she's in and people can see what she's about.

I put it all down to mysogyny! Sad

I hate going to bed - I'd rather stay up and trawl all the politics sites, but it's time to call it a day.

Not long now!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/11/2016 08:49

The trade thing must be a worry Hear - protectionism is not going to be helpful for so many countries.

The reports that Trump has had his twitter account taken from him say it all really. What kind of potential president can't handle twitter?

If you want to get a view on what the active democrats...many on the ground and really up to date polls are you could look at Democratic Underground
They seem pretty positive atm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/11/2016 08:57

And while we are on the subject of twitter FBI is investigating its own twitter account

Absolutely shitting myself over the trade and your right, it wont be only the small countries like NZ affected if Trump gets in but it will have massive flow on affects for China as there could be a trade war between the US and China, which affects us hugely. And the cost of borrowing is set to rise for us. Oh fuck I can't read this anymore.

bread It's after 12am here and I am still awake...I don't know anyone who supports Trump here either (well not in my circles anyway!). Yes I will be on MN to see how the UK reacts...

Your right about mysogny, which is the reason why I think it will take years (if ever) for the US to get a female president because it's still so rife over there.

My own DD who's 17 has said to me tonight how scared she is about how the world is turning out :( Because quite frankly, we could be on the verge on World War III with either Trump or Clinton.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/11/2016 18:51

According to the bbc Trumps team are trying to ease global concern. How??? By turning round tomorrow and saying 'hahaha fooled you, hes not really standing for election??'

Breadandwine · 07/11/2016 18:58

I vary between deep pessimism and cautious optimism! Confused

of Jon Stewart talking about why no-one should vote for Trump is absolutely hilarious.

But the thought of a Trump presidency - just on the evidence from this 5 minutes - is also extremely frightening! Shock

I would not be surprised if he either already has a list - or he'll order the FBI to compile one from day 1.

TheGingerBreadWoman · 07/11/2016 19:16

Just dropping in to ask where wold be the best place to watch the results (Uk/Ireland). I'm in the 'anyone but trump' camp but this has certainly been a fascinating election....if not for the actual politics!!

eternalopt · 07/11/2016 19:45

I am absolutely terrified about what could happen if trump sneaks over the line just because of this fbi story. Prior to that, Clinton was getting her nose well out in front in the polls. I really don't want to live in a world where the most powerful person in it is Donald trump ShockConfused

Breadandwine · 07/11/2016 20:21

Hi GingerBread, I'll be watching it from my armchair from about 10pm+, using my iPhone/laptop/TV and radio, keeping an eye on BBC TV, Sky news, R5live and, online - Twitter/these threads/any source I can find.

I've heard that Florida (I think) will be announcing between 1 and 3am. If Hillary takes Florida, we can all go to bed - not that I will!

If anyone finds a good source/story/link or whatever, and posts it on here, we can all scurry round the net soaking it all in!

You can tell I'm in my cautiously optimistic mood, ATM! Grin

lljkk · 07/11/2016 20:25

Radio 5 for me, although I'd prefer to sleep thru most of it.
NBC & CNN are good.

Bertucci · 07/11/2016 20:27

I am going to stay up.

Last time I went to sleep, confident of an election result, I woke up to Brexit!

TheGingerBreadWoman · 07/11/2016 20:34

Thanks for that.

Forgive my ignorance but is Florida the state that needs winning? Or is it that it's usually indicative of the final outcome?

Bertucci · 07/11/2016 20:43

If Hillary wins Florida, she can afford to lose a couple of the others.

The demographic makeup of Florida will hopefully be in her favour.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/11/2016 20:48

there are only a few states that are up for the toss, the rest are pretty much foregone conclusions. Out of the toss ups I think Florida is the biggest?

I've got my plan. I'm charging up my ipad and phone. Ipad for watching in bed, phone for checking in here. Then hot water bottle, snuggle blanket and I'll doze through the night til I can't take it anymore.

Goodness knows how I'll be at work, I have some meetings I need to be really alert for.

OP posts:
HearTheThunderRoar · 07/11/2016 22:28

I think Colorado and Ohio are also big swing states as well.

This frightening, we only have just over a day left with Obama as President.

Roussette · 08/11/2016 09:01

Hi all !

I was awake in the night for a couple of hours last night (arghhh toothache dammit) and watched live the last rallies of both HC and DT. I have to say HC came across well, obviously aided by the Obamas. DT was negative and snipey and "crooked Hilary" the whole time, there was no looking forward. So to my completely amateur opinion, he is panicing.

A headline this morning -
"Hillary Clinton ends campaign on a high with Obamas, Springsteen and Bon Jovi while Donald Trump finally gets star support in form of Tom Brady"
Yeah... OK... no idea who Tom is but still...

flowersandsunshine · 08/11/2016 09:14

For anyone interested, this gives a timeline of when to expect results coming through. Surprisingly early actually.
