Could anyone recommend reading material for a crash course in politics please?
I have an awareness based on watching the news, listening to the radio and social media. I feel that this is lacking and patchy.
I would like a solid understanding of our political systems, parties and their policies.

Have a look at simplepolitics.co.uk

If you want more in depth understanding you could get an alevel politics text book for background then keep up to date with the news.

Your local college may have an evening class or something to go to
(easier than doing alone)
our system is based on a one man/woman vote in a Parliamentary
two house Democracy. Lords are not directly voted for but can veto any new Law made by Commons except taxation/ financial.
There is also a BBC Channel where you watch live debates.
Some of the House of Lords debates are really interesting as there
are some very life/professionally experienced people in there.
With House of C you never know to some extent whether they really
believe in their policies or are just vote catching
