Just a thread if anyone wants to check in. I voted online for YC.

Well all the bruh ha ha is over and JC is elected as that is democracy and Labour has got the leader it chose

Come 2020 and the electorate decide that they do not wish JC to be the next PM, what is Plan B?

Elections are won / lost on who Jo Public thinks can manage the economy better and make them better off.

Labour thought the May 2015 election was in the bag, as did the Pollsters - Hmmmm, what happened?

Jo Public, with is stubby pencil and a bit of paper decided otherwise

I hope JC gives the current incumbents a run for their money and they don't have an easy ride

I am of the generation that remembers the 3 day week, dead not being buried, rubbish piling up in the streets etc - Winter of Discontent - Google is your friend :)

Whatever government is in power, things have to be paid for, simple as that and I remember a certain Government going cap in hand to the IMF for a loan

Still, honeymoon period for JC at the moment, hard questions will be asked and he has to show that he can be trusted with the economy

Simple as that, no matter what anyone else says

Will now a/w incoming :)

UnGoogleable · 12/09/2015 12:16

The thing is, yes people have memories of how the Labour party got it wrong in the past. The Conservatives have got many things wrong in the past as well.

Do we really think that just because they're Leftist Labour, they're going to go and repeat exactly what they did before? Are they not credited with being able to learn?

Labour thought the May 2015 election was in the bag, but at the end of the day, I think many people vote for personalities not policies. I couldn't bring myself to vote for Milliband. He might be a nice guy (actually believe he's come across well since his defeat), but I didnt want him as PM.

Like it or not, Corbyn is popular. This is the most interest I've ever seen in the media on a party leadership campaign. He is interesting, people are noticing him. That will go a long way.

EngTech · 12/09/2015 12:23

Agreed - The present bunch got things wrong as well so not all one sided

Proof of the pudding will be in 2020 come the election and what Joe Public thinks

Personalities - Agree with that but again Jo Public is very fickle about how they perceive their Prime Minister

We live in interesting times as the Chines say

claig · 12/09/2015 12:23

'This is the most interest I've ever seen in the media on a party leadership campaign.'

Yes, this is why Corbyn will win the General Election. I haven't voted Labour for years and years and I am anti most of their politically correct spinners, but I am excited by Corbyn and there must be many non-Labour voters who feel the same.

There would not be such interest in a Tory leadership election because all of the people know that the Tories work for the City and their billionaire mates and not for the people. The people knew that the Blairites were exactly the same. But everybody in the country knows that Corbyn is for the people and that is why there is this excitement, because Corbyn gives people hope, as SiencynArsecandle said, that someone will fight for us and be on our side for a change.

As people who don't listen to the news and aren't interested in politics begin to hear what Corbyn stands for, then millions more will support Labour. The Tories are in big trouble. The good thing is that they will now also be forced left and have to put the brakes on some of their austerity or they will be wiped out.

I think that's the thing - all the people saying JC is unelectable as PM are kind of missing the point of the purpose of the opposition. It's not all about aiming for the GE, it's about what you do in between as well.

I cannot wait to see JC pit his intellect, sincerity and values directly against the braying knobheads in the cabinet. Can you imagine!?

EngTech · 12/09/2015 12:31

Claig

Politics will indeed get interesting from now on - The incumbent bunch, no doubt, have been preparing for this and will go on the attack

2020 is a long way off, a lot can happen between now and then and Jo Public has a very short memory

If you are convinced that JC will win come 2020 but a big bet on it as you will get great odds from the bookies :)

claig · 12/09/2015 12:31

'I cannot wait to see JC pit his intellect, sincerity and values directly against the braying knobheads in the cabinet. Can you imagine!?'

Absolutely. It is going to be very uncomfortable for Cameron. Corbyn will ask questions that put him on the spot. Corbyn is not a mate of the Tories, he is a real socialist, he will really challenge them.

claig · 12/09/2015 12:35

'If you are convinced that JC will win come 2020 but a big bet on it as you will get great odds from the bookies'

Good point. I am sure Labour will now win it. I am not sure Corbyn will still be leader by that time. He may want to hand over to Watson, I am not sure. I hope he doesn't hand over because he is a remarkable person of hoinesty, decency and integrity such as we have not seen for years. No one else in Labour comes near to how naturally decent he is and that will win over the naturally decent British people. All of the base attacks of the Tories against a decent man like Corbyn will just increase his popularity with the decent British public.

UnGoogleable · 12/09/2015 12:45

It saddens me to think of the dirt that they're inevitably busily trying to dig up on him and his family though - he mentioned that in his speech. Urging the press to leave his family alone - but they almost certainly won't.

I think all the dirty tricks in the book are about to be wheeled out

claig · 12/09/2015 12:46

Emily Thornberry coming across well. Hope she makes a comeback and works for Corbyn.

Redkite2015 · 12/09/2015 12:48

Amazing support that JC got in all sections of the party: members, affiliates and supporters.

Labour MPs should realise this support and get behind their leader. Leaders gave to make unpopular decisions and can't always go by concensus. Leaders need to lead and not always follow popular opinion.

Unions should learn not to strike in essential services, like health and transport. JC might need to stay away from fat earning McCluskey types. They are confrontational and would only add humiliation to Labour and JC.

claig · 12/09/2015 12:50

'I think all the dirty tricks in the book are about to be wheeled out'

Yes, they will say he is a security risk, dangerous etc But I don't think the people will fall for any of it.

They won't be able to play their usual racist card on him as they do with Farage, so they won't be groups of people with placards shouting him down as a racist, which is usually their best trick.

Badders123 · 12/09/2015 12:53

I'm so happy to have a leader that I can look up to. A man of principle and morals.
He will make Cameron look like exactly what he is....an elitist, unprincipled idiot.

claig · 12/09/2015 12:54

Rachel Reeves says she won't serve in the Shadow Cabinet. She was about the only Labour politician I actually liked. Shame.

PermetsTu · 12/09/2015 12:54

I am thrilled. Not interested in the unelectable rhetoric tbh. I voted for an opposition leader. His electability rests on his actions from now, not on projected credulous nonsense.

Jez. We. DID.

UnGoogleable · 12/09/2015 12:57

'I think all the dirty tricks in the book are about to be wheeled out'

And as I wrote that, I just remembered who has recently been reappointed as CEO of News International...... they're lining up their front line.

gingercat12 · 12/09/2015 13:27

Congrats, JC and TW!

We treated our local McDonalds to the Youtube broadcast of the results - shouting 'just tell us who won!!!'.

Michael Fallon, Defence Secretary just now on TV "This result now presents a serious risk to our National Security, and the security of your families" outlining labour policies on defence

Erm, that would imply that you expect Labour to be in charge of the country one day Mr Fallon. Nice own goal.

claig · 12/09/2015 13:50

'Nice own goal' Grin

They will repeat this message for 5 years, just like they were all on message about "the longterm economic plan". But I think they underestimate the people.

Good news, Chuka Umunna says he won't serve in the Shadow Cabinet. We won't see his slick patter for a long time on our TV screens. This just gets better and better.

claig · 12/09/2015 13:51

And Tristram won't serve in the Shadow Cabinet. Great, hopefully the BBC won't keep inviting him on Questiontime either. This just gets better and better!

UnGoogleable · 12/09/2015 14:06

Yes, I wanted to like him, but as soon as the slick, rehearsed spin comes out his mouth it turns me right off.

It really is something as simple as the way the express themselves to me. I'm pretty superficial with my politicians!

JC is like a squeeze of lemon in Labour's water to cleanse the pallet after gorging on greasy cheese and for years.

I have enough popcorn, drinks and a comfy chair and look forward to the inevitable rhetoric about "We are better than them, trust us" arguments till 2020

Still boils down to who do the electorate trust when they have to make that choice.

Governments fall because they make big mistakes, loose public trust and Jo Public feels worse off - A week is a long time in politics, 2020 is a long way off but we shall see what comes

Politicians of all colours will promise the earth to get elected and then realise they can't "afford" what they have promised.

Labour needs to identify why it got "nuked" in Scotland and why it lostthe 2015 election.

That is what JC has to sort out and address - Waste of time shouting from the rooftops that they are better than the incumbents.

Come up with a credible, costed options - Then let the electorate vote on who they trust

Question - How will JC sort out Scotland?

KeyserSophie · 12/09/2015 14:12

Checks list for female leaders........ oh .......... Labour risk being 2-0 down to the Eton toffs. tsk. If ever you were going to rig a ballot now would have been a good time.

claig · 12/09/2015 14:48

Tory MP Priti Patel on Sky says that Labour pose a "serious risk" to our country's defences and our economy. They will all be on message about "serious risk" now for the next 5 years. Their best Oxbridge teenage think tank whizzkids have obviously come up with this wheeze, but they will oveuse it and become like the Tory who cried wolf. I don't think the people will fall for it when they hear what Corbyn is offering.
