Labour's welfare policy

Seems to be oppose welfare reform, support welfare reform, abstain on welfare reform, and then moan on Twitter about it.

Andy Burnham, having bravely abstained on the real vote, has now genuinely said on Twitter:

@andyburnhammp: To clarify - I will be voting to oppose the Welfare Reform Bill tonight by voting for a Labour motion which I helped secure.

It's hilarious.

They don't have a policy. Or any policies.Their policy is to try and work out what voters want (as they see it) and call that a policy.

Most Labour Party types I know are mortified.

The only policy Labour seem to have right now is to run around like headless chickens. And they're doing that very well.

Well I'd vote for Corbyn myself. Not that I'm a member. At least he is honest, and straight.

Most people think that that a benefit system that pays out the equiv of £34k+ pre tax, but don't earn that themselves, is not just dishonest and unfair, but taxpayer day-light robbery.

Any fool of a politician can STILL want to keep spending money we haven't got when the county has a near £1,600,000,000,000 of national debt, and still want to keep borrowing.

I don't agree with your analysis. But I do think that many politicians of both persuasions were happy to pay out the bankers. It would be great if one had a different mindset, so here's hoping.

The issue that labour had with voting against the welfare bill is that cleverly the tories added things in there which labour believe very strongly in and would never vote against, ie the modern apprenticeships. The challenged the bill via amendant, so effectively they didnt abstain as such, they wanted the bill amended. Very tricky position for labour to be in, as if they had voted against they would have been slated for voting against some of their own polices
