Does anyone know anything about the People's Assembly?

That's it really, have read their website stuff, looks interesting, there's a meeting near here soon that I was thinking of going to.

(Actually, I guess what I really mean is, is it all run by the SWP, or is it a genuine coalition, involving the unions etc?)

Whoever designed their website came right out of 1999 IMO.

I'm sure that any group which has the Communist party and Socialist Resistance listed among its organisers is destined for great things.

I did go along to the meeting, and was actually much more impressed than I expected. The speaker was very much about making it not 'party political' and simply bringing together a coalition against the one specific issue of austerity. (Obviously some people may not agree with this point, so it wouldn't be their thing!)

It definitely wasn't just the 'usual suspects' locally who were organising the meeting.

I went to the big conference back in June, SWP were there but we're very much resigned to crappy stalls outside. The people's assembly is simply a coalition of left leaning groups against austerity, key speakers were Rania Khan, Owen Jones, Len Mcluskey, Tony Benn etc. It's not at all party political but a forum for discussing and planning direct action (such as the campaign to save Lewisham Hospital). There was a bit of infighting (which will always be the left's downfall) but in the whole I feel it's worth being involved.

That was my thought, whitefeathers. Its a bit tricky hitting the right note in Wales as the Welsh Govt aren't actually too bad (IMO) and we do have some genuine left alternatives to vote for with Plaid esp under new leader & Welsh labour.

But the bottom line is that the cash is decided at Westminster, so we do need to make our voice heard there, despite the fact that we are so far away & remote that they are never going to be that interested in us! (Our particular bit of wales, that is, not suggesting Cardiff/Swansea etc remote though you'd think so from what you see on UK national media)
