Please support this petition to change the law re 17 year olds in custody

Can I just raise this issue - I don't want to say too much as I will probably out myself and the focus should be about Joe and his family, suffice to say he was a bright, articulate boy who is sadly missed by his friends and family. Nick and Jane have had lots of publicity in trying to get the law changed so that 17 year olds are treated as children in custody.

Done, I am in Cheshire, my Auntie lives in Cheadle and my cousin works in a primary school in the area, we talked about this a lot, I will email them the link to pass round.

I signed the petition and will pass it on for signature. I'm surprised more have not signed. Is the petition on Facebook? That normally gets a good response.
I can't imagine what the family are going through. I have a young son and
it makes you think, I did not know that 17 year old could be held overnight in custody without his parents knowledge. It is outrageous. Has anyone written to David Cameron about this? I know of people who are constituents of his, perhaps they could write and pass on the reply.

Quite probably, certainly his mum and dad gave lots on interviews when they launched the campaign.

yes we need to reuce suicides among people in custody

Joe had been kept overnight in the police cells, hadn't wanted his mum and dad to know as he was embarrased, went home and thought about it for 2 days before concluding - as someone without the benefit of age might do - that he would never have the lfe that he had envisaged for himself before he took his own life on the Saturday night.

It's not just the driving, it could be any child who has been stopped by the police - rightly or not - that can be held and yes they will be asked 'Do you want us to phone ayone?' but some will always say no as they are ashamed or embarrassed.
I would want to know if my child, who still lived at home with me had been arrested.

I do realise that - they would always be my child however old..... but I think that the real issue is that they are held in custody as an adult but once charged they would be charged as a child.

I've signed. My son was arrested aged 15 as a cricket ball went through someones window and that person called the police.

he had his dna taken, all possessions, shoelaces, put in a cell.

the police came round and i went to the station. The Police looked after him - he got hot chocolate i seem to remember. But we are a relatively quiet town. in a big town or city, i don't think the police would have the time, and the personable aspect of the police could be lost almost certainly.

DS was very shocked and mortified that i was there. If this was him at 17 - he absolutley wouldn't have phoned me.
