Society: why has it gone and how do we get it back?

According to Wikipedia: "A society, or a human society, is a group of people related to each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or virtual territory, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations".

I don?t believe it exists anymore and this cannot be a good thing.

When did it go wrong?
How do we get is back?
Does it exist in parts of the UK?

But, maybe you are right UrIndoors. Maybe there are no conspiracies, maybe no one colludes to fix rates.

claig · 14/07/2012 02:09

''

I see, that is the community you are a member of.

Tortington · 14/07/2012 02:10

libor is a self interest community

UrIndoors · 14/07/2012 02:10

No. NK is most certainly not bonkers. But politically she is much further to the left than you purport to be. It comes as no surprise to socialists that the rich are trying to fuck the poor

What's bizarre is that on some diluvian level you seem to recognise this too - and yet you're still proud to vote Tory. If you can't see that dichotomy, I'm not sure it's worth my while trying to explain the paradox any further.

claig · 14/07/2012 02:11

'libor is a self interest community '

One person or one bank was it?

claig · 14/07/2012 02:12

'It comes as no surprise to socialists that the rich are trying to fuck the poor'

OK, so are they conspiring together to do this or is it all just chance?

claig · 14/07/2012 02:14

'and yet you're still proud to vote Tory. If you can't see that dichotomy, I'm not sure it's worth my while trying to explain the paradox any further.'

I see, you're too clever for me UrInddors, first I'm a wind-up, then I'm bonkers for agreeing with Naomi Klein and now it's not worthwhile debating with me because I am too thick to see the light.

the federation of united star ships

or the mason?

UrIndoors · 14/07/2012 02:16

No need to get defensive Claig

claig · 14/07/2012 02:18

I am not getting defensive, but you are starting to get patronizing.

So you think the rich want to screw the poor. Do you think they conspire to do this, do you think it is ideological or do you think it just occurs?

Tortington · 14/07/2012 02:18

there is a definite apparatchik working to keep rich people rich.

back to the question
rich people delude themselves with romantasised fantasies of communitites
#themasonsstolecommunity

claig · 14/07/2012 02:24

'rich people delude themselves with romantasised fantasies of communitites'

No it is completely opposite. The powerful sell the message that there is no community, there is no society, in order to atomise society and stop people uniting in communities.

There are communities and the powerful understand that they get stronger the greater the crisis, which is when teh powerful increase teh message that there is no community.

UrIndoors · 14/07/2012 02:26

"rich people delude themselves with romantasised fantasies of communitites" - yep, it's feudal innit?

I am not trying to patronise you Claig, but I have been reading your comments on MN for a long time, and I maintain that I think your discourse is very conflicted. Moar logic, less conzpiraceeisz please.

UrIndoors · 14/07/2012 02:29

"The powerful sell the message that there is no community, there is no society, in order to atomise society and stop people uniting in communities... There are communities and the powerful understand that they get stronger the greater the crisis, which is when teh powerful increase teh message that there is no community."

How does this fit in with 'The Big Society'?

claig · 14/07/2012 02:30

Maybe you don't understand it then. I agree with Naomi Klein. Maybe you have misundersttod her too. But, I don't think the Tories are the elite or that teh Tories are screwing the poor. I don't know if Naomi Klein thinks that. If so, then I think she is wrong. But I doubt that she believes that. I think she is cleverer than that.

UrIndoors · 14/07/2012 02:32

Who exactly do you think holds political power then? "The Elite"? Who are they?

claig · 14/07/2012 02:35

The Big Society is bullshit. It is about volunteering to clear up beaches for free. It is the type of thing talked about by Niall Ferguson in the Reith Lectures 2012, where he implies that teh problem is that we are not doing our bit. It is a diversion from looking at the real issues, the real scandals and swindles that need to be solved and for which inquiries need to be held, and a coralling into working for free on side issues. It is not the solution to the real problems facing a community and diverts attention from teh real problems.

UrIndoors · 14/07/2012 02:35

And if you don't believe that the Tories are screwing the poor, please tell me what the Tories are doing to make poor people's lives better and improve their prospects.

UrIndoors · 14/07/2012 02:36

Big Society = flagship Tory policy

So why are you still voting for them if you think this policy is bullshit?

claig · 14/07/2012 02:36

'Who are they?'

I don't know. But I think it is probably people with billions and billions of dollars, because money is power.

claig · 14/07/2012 02:38

'So why are you still voting for them if you think this policy is bullshit?'

Because I think for myself, I don't blindly believe everything they say or think they are getting everything right, but I believe they are better than New Labour.
