But fat cats in water companies will see their salaries continue to increase and

'Environment Secretary Hilary Benn claimed the scheme is essential to tackle the threat of summer droughts and winter flooding caused by climate change.
But Steve Webb, the Liberal Democrat environment spokesman, said: "This announcement is missing a commitment to get tough with water companies over the huge number of leaks in their pipes.
"We have all seen evidence of leaking water pipes in our streets. It is crazy to see water that has been expensively processed and purified simply spurting out of broken pipes and running away.
"The Government must put more pressure on these companies to tackle their leakage rates. Otherwise this strategy will be a total failure."

Betelguese Shock

"Recent months have also seen continued pressure from Merkel and Sarkozy on Greece to honour its arms deals amid ongoing negotiations over the current bailout deal"

Germany benefiting from Greeks securing more loans, the German armament industry will continue to be the benefactor. So Merkel is happy for Greeks to take their lives and abandon their children as long as she can still play gun runner. Great stuff.

Oh so now it is arms deals and greece being a buffer State. The greeks had there country saved for them 60 odd years ago and they have had plenty of tie to pay their own taxes. They didn't but didn't have a problem living the high life or improving efficiency in any area and now they are reaping the results.
it seems that your arguments are becoming more akin to marxism and have no social democratic views to them. You just speak of entitlement, entitlement ,entitlement.

WasabiTillyMinto · 12/05/2012 23:23

i think debating different politics systems and strategies are irrelevant for a country that cannot balance its books.

until it lives within its means, it is going to stay in a bad place.

minimathsmouse · 13/05/2012 00:01

"You just speak of entitlement, entitlement ,entitlement." I'm not the person to advocate for a big tax and redistributive government.

Germany and France have profited from this situation, no wonder they are keen to impose austerity, they want Greece to buy their guns. Reminds me of chile and Tanzanier.

NovackNGood · 13/05/2012 00:27

Pensiners in Greece are getting as much money as Hungarian pensioners.. Food prices etc. are almsot identical between the two nations. But of course the cost of haeting is much less in Greece and Air con is not a necessity for locals before anyone plays that card.

They have to tighten their belts. And with time they will get through. The protesters could be organising themselves into co-ops.

The could be protesting the 700 Billion euros of wealth the Greek Orthodox Church has which is DOUBLT the national debt. The church could pay it off tomorrow( or within 12 months realistically) and still pump the remainder in to growth and sustainable projects for the future. Banks and arms deals are nothing in comparison to this unused fortune.

The neo nazi groups are just small bunches of idiots in greece like the BNP etc.and will not gain any major foothold although in saying that socialist france has the largest nationalist grouping of any european country and of course the UK is still having to monitor the Greeks and Turk in Cyprus. Quite frankly there is a far greater chance of the US sleepwalking into a theocracy rather than than neo fascism in europe.

minimathsmouse · 13/05/2012 12:04

So Novak, socialism is crap, right wing political parties are too and all the time the democratic middle ground thinkers driving almost every nation on earth, have it right after all. And where are we? oh, we are in the do do. Grin

If you want to label poeple, you can start with me, so what am I? I have two legs, two eyes and a brain, could be human might be an ape. What are you?

Because as Betelguese points out, we can tell a persons humanity by how he/she treats others. Or rather we can tell how civilised a state is by how well it cares for it's weakest members. Right now the EU is looking more like Dantes Inferno than anything remotely civilised.

On the ground, my Greek friends tell me problem is economy is stuck - money is not moving. Consequently, restaurant owners for example tell people to pay what they can afford - to keep some flow of money going around. Parents with kids and ageing grandparents particularly scared when they do not get their salaries.

I think Greece will return to the drachma but when, when it suits Europe or the people of Greece?

Novak - you sound extreme! You can afford to be compassionate, we all can in the UK.

That's where all the public spending went. Tell them to tighten their belts.
