Still angry, I hope the protests on the 3rd of March all over the country really keep this campaign lit, it makes me furious to think people seem to assume it has been sorted.

I will boycott every company that uses schemes like this until they are ended completely.

The Salvation Army has defended their right to continue using workfare. Its on the Boycott Workfare site. The SALLY ARMY FFS they are supposed to help people in poverty not fucking cause it.

MrsDeeBee · 22/02/2012 23:40

I think the clue is in the word, voluntary, Eau.

As in not 'required' or 'forced' or 'co-erced'.

carernotasaint · 22/02/2012 23:42

I will NOT give to these charities again in any way shape or form until they pull out of workfare completely.

ThingyDoDa · 22/02/2012 23:43

Please, please, please stop calling it Workfare. DWP has no programme called Workfare - it is the name for the US programme. As far as they are concerned Workfare does not exist and no employer will recognise any scheme by that name. By calling it Workfare you are giving them an escape route! And enabling them to waffle on and confuse people about the Work Experience programme - which is voluntary until after week 1 - and Mandatory Work Activity, none of which is voluntary.

EauDeLaPoisson · 22/02/2012 23:44

So people with no reason not to work who have been existing on benefits year upon year shouldn't be required to do anything for their money???

carernotasaint · 22/02/2012 23:51

What the fuck is right about CHARITIES or MASSIVE PROFIT MAKING COMPANIES issuing a sanction which then causes poverty. its called a CONFLICT OF INTEREST.

QuintessentialyHollow · 22/02/2012 23:53

I will not be doing my weekly shop with Tesco because of this.

I will do an Ocado shop instead.

Bye Bye Tesco. And FUCK YOU!

carernotasaint · 22/02/2012 23:55

poisson are you telling me its right for the sally army to sanction someone and possibly cause them to become homeless.
Owen Jones is bang on the very thing that these companies dont want to pay.
(meaning he is bang on the money) when he says "What the hell has this country come to when we have to discuss whether or not someone gets paid a wage for the job they do.

EauDeLaPoisson · 22/02/2012 23:56

Why does it cause poverty to make someone work for their benefits?? They are already getting money to support themselves. I'm not saying they should be forced to work 37.5 hours a week for crap all but doing some hours for charity or the environment I can't see the big deal really

Pickgo · 22/02/2012 23:58

Eau you do know JSA is £67 a week right? If anyone has been able to survive year upon year on that amount of money I think they need a medal personally.

But where are all these alleged people? ... apart from in the pages of the Daily Fail that is?

carernotasaint · 22/02/2012 23:59

And another thing Poisson. People are being referred to this Work Programme as soon as they sign on and its not just young people. its people in their 30s 40s 50s. (one 60 year old man was made to work for his benefits in a posh golf club for three months) so what about the taxes these people have already paid then hmmm??? And yet they havent abolished National Insurance.

EauDeLaPoisson · 23/02/2012 00:04

I know several people who do pickgo. No ambition no pride and contribute nada to society. They are prime candidates for giving a little back for once

carernotasaint · 23/02/2012 00:06

Because they could get sanctioned Poisson (my God youve certainly chosen the right user name.) they could get sanctioned for something as simple as being ill.

There are young girls on these schemes who are walking home after a NIGHT SHIFT because there are no buses and on JSA they cant afford taxis after doing a NIGHT SHIFT stacking shelves. And a lot of them were "on placement" over the Christmas period when the nights are longer and darker.

Eau, so you don't mind tax payers money being paid to the likes of tesco and all the others so they can exploit people in this way for jsa, which is also paid by tax payers.

All so these shops can have people stacking shelves.

And how will it help let's say a mechanic that's been made redundant, oh I am sure shelf stacking in the middle would look great to a prospective employer Hmm

They are EXPLOITING people in the most disgusting way, that's why I posted the link to the original thread, so you could have a good old read up on everything that had been said, it may help you understand it a bit more.

It is not voluntary either, do it or get sanctioned, so you can't even request to gain experience in a sector you may well be interested in.

EauDeLaPoisson · 23/02/2012 00:10

That's why I said non profit related organisations....

Bag0fsmeggyDicks · 23/02/2012 00:10

EauDeLaPoisson Do you not think that living off a pittance for that long is why they have no ambition? Would you feel confident and optimistic living hand to mouth like that?

WTF do you expect them to contribute to society? They pay VAT, so that is a contribution.

Tiredmumno1 · 23/02/2012 00:11

All so Hmm I meant also - damn autocorrect Blush

TapselteerieO · 23/02/2012 00:11

So a company, like Tesco/Asda/Boots making billions in profits is still paid by the taxpayer rather than pay its' own workers. This is on top of the continuing subsidies of housing benefit, family credit etc paid to fund their workers low wages.

If you are in a job, free labour undermines your position and benefits, opposing free work is right not just to defend the vulnerable, but also to defend your own job.

OP posts:
EauDeLaPoisson · 23/02/2012 00:14

I expect people to do their damnedest to improve their career skills so doing some charity work or volunteering not sat in Facebook saying 'sick of the school run' or commenting on Jeremy Kyle

carernotasaint · 23/02/2012 00:14

Poisson back in 2000 i did two work placements in a charity shop and my local council. After it was completed there was no job in existence and the providers Reed and Pelcombe wanted me to work in Campbells soup factory for my JSA. I found a job in a sex chatline office and took it and signed off.
poisson i assume you would have been quite happy for your DH/DP to call someone like me up for explicit chat because ........hey it keeps me off the dole doesnt it!!!!!!!

EauDeLaPoisson · 23/02/2012 00:16

My dh doesn't phone sex chat lines but ermm nice try....

Tiredmumno1 · 23/02/2012 00:16

Yup eau I am sure they all do that Hmm

EauDeLaPoisson · 23/02/2012 00:18

I didn't say all of them did- but making a few claimants work for their idle existence would be welcomed by me
