WTF are Frothers? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Fighting for the "basic line of British decency" against fiscal brutality.

What are Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Come and join us.

Social fund axed, money goes to local control, but no ring fencing, so the money is lost. How desperate will that be?.

Val - there is no point arguing with brick walls. There was a whole lot of bashing going on yesterday. Just appalling. Some for the shit stirring pleasure of it, but some people will never choose to listen or see things from any other perspective than their own narrow view, they will never read up or become better informed. Maybe they are afraid to, I have no idea. But you were right and they were wrong HTH Grin

lubeybooby · 24/01/2012 10:42

Hunty oh thank GOD for that.

I don't understand how ANYONE can read your posts and not see whats going on/agree it's shite/become a frother!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/01/2012 10:44

Hunty - that really is good, marvellous Smile

Hullygully · 24/01/2012 10:46

The "I don't quite understand why spongers get £26k a year to spend on fags" threads are started by work experiencers at Tory CO. I wager all my wong.

CardyMow · 24/01/2012 10:47

The social fund abolishment is going to ABSOLUTELY screw people like me. I am currently paying back a social fund loan at £7.50 a week. What did I take out the loan for? A 50" TV? A forrin holiday? NO! I took it out so that I could afford to get my COOKER REPAIRED. The oven thermostat went. And I am quite lucky - I have a cooker that was brand new just 5 years ago, that was bought when I was working FT, so hasn't had that much go wrong with it other than that . MOST people I know on benefits buy second-hand white goods that only last 12 months or so. If their fridge / washing machine / cooker break down, and they can't get a social loan, it will be people like Provident (44% interest on £100, and the rate rises with every £100 borrowed), Wonga.com (4268% interest last time I checked), and old-fashioned, break your legs if you don't pay, loan sharks that will fill the gap.

Because the NEED will still be there. The Tories seem unable to grasp that basic principle. That just because they SAY that that isn't a NEED, doesn't make it any LESS of one. Just like because they say that epilepsy, or MH issues AREN'T a disability, that it doesn't make the person suffering from epilepsy or MH issues ANY LESS DISABLED.

NEEDS don't disappear forthe convenience of others. They're a bit pesky like that!

ninjasquirrel · 24/01/2012 10:47

"Cut by 39%; the remaining £178m will be dispersed to local authorities but not ringfenced. Many councils admit they will spend it on other things."
There is also a risk that once some councils don't provide it, neighbouring ones won't want to be too generous because they won't want to attract applicants.

Bramshott · 24/01/2012 11:07

Actually lubey the OP of the thread you posted on today (the "even my 12 year old is wondering why these benefit scroungers are getting so much money" thread) did come back to post "after a good think, I think what DC is trying to do is make people like us turn against people like benefits claiments, as people like us cant understand how it seems possible to get in benefits what we go out to earn" - the penny drops!

WTF re Social Fund?? How has that gone unreported?

TeWihara · 24/01/2012 11:11

Right blog posts:

I volunteer to whip one up tonight about what happened yesterday with the cap.

Who wants to do social fund and who wants to do CSA changes? We have a great one already but a new post that links back to it might be good, just keeping the issue around.

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 11:28

hello all. I've been a bit quiet due to RL and finding it all just a bit much atm.

I have started a sanctuary thread for the frothed out and the frustrated. It is supposed to be a bit of a love in rather than practical organising stuff. Do pop in if you are feeling drained or frustrated. I think we needed an antidote to the copious benefit bashing threads that have sprung up in the last few days www.mumsnet.com/Talk/politics/1390645-The-Down-with-this-sort-of-thing-picket-There-is-a-burger-van-and-you-can-wear-your-donkey-jacket-and-fingerless-gloves

I think I have a blog post in me about who gets the benefits of benefits but I'm a bit pushed for time.

KnottyLocks · 24/01/2012 11:33

Wotcha Kate, lovely to see you Smile

I'll pop on over in a min.

Meanwhile, Paggy has started a thread here asking MNHQ to lump all the benefit bashing thread together.

KatieMiddleton · 24/01/2012 11:41

thanks Knotty Smile

lubeybooby · 24/01/2012 11:43

Bramshott Hurrah! I am heartened and amazed to hear of people actually listening. Might be only a few but thank god some people are capable of taking the gravity of the situation on board, seeing past the media etc.

Now, to convert the rest of them!

TeWi I volunteer to do a scrapping of the social fund blog post.

I need a new twitter identity first though so will be later tonight/early tomorrow before I can get a move on with it

OMG at the Social Fund.

We need Stella Creasy on this - she is campaigning for legislation against legal loan sharks.

ninjasquirrel · 24/01/2012 12:12

Bit new to this thread, so apologies if it's been done already, but the Guardian welfare reform blog is good for the latest developments.

garlicfrother · 24/01/2012 12:21

I'm about to start a new Social Fund thread - is this correct?

The Social Fund is about to be axed. This is government money, which is available to local authorities for small loans & grants to people in need. Money will still be given to the councils, but not 'ring-fenced' meaning the councils won't have to use it as intended. They might use it to switch the street-lamps back on, for example.

Hunty
Am writing a quick blog for my blog about the Social fund. May I quote your section there, where you write about your experiences?

garlicfrother · 24/01/2012 12:29

OK, it's not quite right. Am abandoning the idea until I've seen MmeL's post!

KnottyLocks · 24/01/2012 12:49

Social Fund article here

CardyMow · 24/01/2012 12:51

Yep, no problem, Mme.

MmeLindor. · 24/01/2012 12:55

I luff Hully. Lots and lots and lots for the bestest ever thread ever.

garlicfrother · 24/01/2012 13:01

OK, I checked some facts and posted www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1390782-I-used-the-Social-Fund-for

Hully is a bloody legend, agreed. And, a little known fact, she dances like a demon.

I want to hug Hunty for using RANDOM capitals and loads of block print so it is MUCH easier to find her POSTS when I am searching through an OLD THREAD.

Am stealing a bit from the other thread as well, don't want to make you identifiable but basic circumstances. Will PM you the post and you can tell me to delete bits if you want.
