What are Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Come and join us.

Hi,

garlic Still happy to look at the re-tagging... but still can't access it? Let me know.

Really sorry to hear about your situation Hunty... I hope that something goes your way soon. Sending best wishes (though I realise that's not much help.)
I agree sharing your story might be a good way to go.

Durham Welfare Rights worker attended the Mental Health Countywide Forum today. They have lost seven workers because the County Council is having to make such deep cuts. We all had a froth about the Welfare Reform changes Sad Angry

Meglet · 06/02/2012 22:01

I'll sign the petition and was going to write to the Queen anyway. Got used to hammering out letters to the HOC + HOL, may as well go right to the top this time.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that.....

yunmmy pm me your email address and I should be able to do it.

yummymummyreally · 08/02/2012 07:41

Tewihara...
I can't seem to work out how to do that. Do some options disappear when you access via mobile web? Can I do it via your profile usually?

TeWihara · 08/02/2012 10:11

erm, no I think maybe you can't do it via the mobile MN - I can see a list of all the author's email address' and usernames, so if you can give me a clue as to which one is you I should be able to guess?

TeWihara · 08/02/2012 17:39

Hunty BBC is looking for a family affected by the benefit cap through MN - they said it's radio only and can be anonymous - a possibility?

CardyMow · 08/02/2012 21:12

I'll sleep on it...

KnottyLocks · 09/02/2012 08:08

hello all Smile

I've just tweeted using the #frothers hashtag. Cuts are closing Naomi House: a brilliant charity that supports young mums with drug issues. It helps them to get clean and supports their parenting. The article about it is linked in the tweet.

Sorry can't stick around - work calls. I'll pop in later and catch up properly.

KnottyLocks · 09/02/2012 08:14

Naomi House article in Guardian

KnottyLocks · 09/02/2012 09:32

I can get a quick post done this eve re Naomi House unless anyone else fancies getting one done any earlier.

I'll check back in at lunch time.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/02/2012 12:01

(Work meeting finished early and I am 'working' from home Grin Blush)

Was coming on to moan about the arse what is bully boy Wilshaw, but will leave that for now.

These shitty cuts yet again affecting the most vulnerable, abandon early intervention and support, total crap. Not right and won't save money either, and all the while we hear about plans for the jubilee and the olympics. Priorities are wrong. Going to look at the thread. It's just so bleak innit?

Re writing a blog bit - all I know about this is what I've just read.

KnottyLocks · 09/02/2012 16:12

Me too, Pistey.

Unfortuantely, I think this could well be the start of a long line of charities that will have to consider the support they offer due to funding cuts. Although Naomi House hasn't been funded massively by money direct from the government, it has relied on money from other sources which has dried up.

The reality is that when so many people now have to consider the increasing costs of providing for their own families, and businesses have to plow money that they once could have used to sponsor or donate to charities like this one back into supporting their own, charities will feel the backlash.

And at a time when they are needed more than ever.

KnottyLocks · 09/02/2012 16:13

Sorry, should have checked that before posting. Loads of typing errors.

TeWihara · 10/02/2012 21:39

nhs reform comes to house of lords next week so we need a post on that soonish.

KnottyLocks · 10/02/2012 22:23

Evening.
Not got the post up yet as was waiting for more info. The deeper I looked into the effect of cuts on charities and the current climate, the more depressing the picture became. It appears that many, many more charities will be affected- especially smaller ones, who provide vital services for those who fall through the Welfare net.
With the Welfare cuts, more people will need these services: services that will soon cease to exist.

Bloody bleak.

ChickenLickn · 10/02/2012 23:51

GOOD NEWS AT LAST

Sainsburys and Waterstones have pulled out of workfare - the scheme where the government was forcing jobseekers to work 30 hr/week unpaid for 6months in profit making companies or lose JSA.

Good places to shop:
COOP
Waitrose
Waterstones
Sainsburys

Bad:
Boots,
Tesco,
Asda,
Primark,
Argos,
TK Maxx,
Poundland
Arcadia group of stores run by billionaire Sir Philip Green, which includes Top Shop and Burton.

Please avoid shopping in the bad shops as much as possible, this is basically slavery and is illegal under human rights law (and currently being challenged in the courts).

Meglet · 11/02/2012 18:08

This new working tax credit threshold, where people have to increase their hours to 24 (from a previous minimum of 16) is going to cause chaos for many people isn't it? I'm assuming I'm exempt as I'm a LP, if not we're totally screwed.

How are they going to get their employers to increase their hours Confused, hours aren't available just because you fancy working a bit more.

This is just a way of getting people to work more hours without extra pay isn't it. If people are desperate to keep their jobs and not lose £100's of tax credits they'll end up increasing their hours but for less hourly pay. The employers will be in a win/win situation and the employees will be shafted, as usual.

Angry
CardyMow · 11/02/2012 21:47

It is for Lone parents - the 24 hours. They are going to be totally magnanamous and give you either 13 or 26 weeks to either increase your hours with your CURRENT employer, or find a NEW job that meets the 24 hr threshold. At the same time as every OTHER Lone Parent is trying to find those extra 8 hours a week TOO...

Sorry, needed a bit of a break from frothing. Since my periods have come back, my epilepsy has returned with a vengeance. Had a HUGE seizure yesterday IN the middle of Tescos. (I know, workfare, but Sainsbury's is an hour and a half away by bus,and we don't HAVE a co-op...).

I hit my head on a metal trolley, also bruised the palm of my hand and my elbow. I had a bit of concussion, so was told to rest yesterday and today.

Now I've got to fight persuade my bankrupt PCT to 'allow' me to go and see an out-of-PCT-area Neurologist, as we don't even HAVE one in my PCT. So it'll mean a 60+ mile journey, IF they allow me. Which they haven't for the last 2 years. I'll have to take it to tribunal, probably. .

garlicfrother · 11/02/2012 23:55

Bloody hell, Hunty. I'm sorry you're having such a shitty time.

All these 'reforms' are going to create a hell of a lot of work for tribunals, aren't they? Until someone realises and cuts that budget too
