What are Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Sorry to hear you are having a crap time Hunty. Compassion is something that seems to be disappearing fast in this country. i really fkin despair.

carernotasaint · 12/02/2012 00:04

Just thought id mention that single parents asking about the new tax credit rules on MSE are being told by posters on there that they DONT have to increase their hours from 16.
There are a lot of right wing nasties on mse though and i find that site extremely mysogynistic and always take stuff on there with a very big pinch of salt.

CardyMow · 12/02/2012 00:09

Oh, they WILL have to increase their hours. They will get around 13 weeks from April 2013 to do so. If I WERE in that situation right now - I'd get in early and increase my hours NOW, while there still might be some chance of the hours being available. Because by the time April 2013 rolls around - they'll have all been taken!

D'ya wanna hear MY take on it? The Lone Parents that CAN'T get the extra 8 hours in their CURRENT job, AND can't find a new job that fits in with their childcare, will have no choice but to give up their current employment - as they won't get TC's - and will then become Workfare fodder...

Cynical, moi?

tallwivglasses · 12/02/2012 00:13

Is there anyone out there who could do a sort of 'frothers' round-up? I don't have time to trawl through but there's some really good stuff on here - you're amazing.

There was an excellent Radio 4 prog tonight about the monarchy. I can't link it because I'm not savvy. I wish you could type in 'lefty mnetters' and find the good threads...still lovely to stumble upon Grin

Rambling.

Will stop now.

carernotasaint · 12/02/2012 00:46

Hunty its probably what they planned all along I dont think you are being cynical at all. I think you are bang on the money.

CardyMow · 12/02/2012 03:34

Someone out there disliked some of my comments tonight. I was 'bumped' off MN, have only just been able to get back on here.

I couldn't access MN, facebook, Twitter, Guardian CiF, Boycott Workfare, ANY newspaper site, any TV site, not even Cbeebies. Even my email wasn't working...in my HuntyCat name or my RL name.

Yet I could get onto cake decorating websites, and fucking Tescos and boots, and Clarks shoe shop, and babytv websites, and my DD's school website.

I was being CENSORED. Angry

CardyMow · 12/02/2012 03:35

(I am still awake because Ex-P is here trying to help me stop BF'ing DS3 as I need to stop co-sleeping as my seizures are back).

DS3 has JUST fallen asleep. I am going to bed in a minute.

CardyMow · 12/02/2012 03:38

Though I DID have a bit of fun with whoever was doing the job of censoring me - I was typing in things like dragon butter, and freedom of speech, and then questions about how come MN was off-limits, yet cake decorating wasn't...

Meglet · 12/02/2012 14:20

I won't increase my hours. I'm already crumbling under what I do now Sad. I was doing so well at work I was able to cut my hours down to 18 so I could do school drop off and pick up. The dc's behaviour is so bad I'm not going to add to our stress levels.

If I increase my hours and add another day in it'll cost the government even more in childcare tax credits because I'll have to sick DD in nursery for that day. They don't do joined up thinking do they Confused.

hunty I know they're bloody watching us. .

ChickenLickn · 12/02/2012 16:02

Hunty I have had "connection problems" too.

carernotasaint · 12/02/2012 16:41

Did you notice how the middle classers on the other thread didnt like being told that they should work for their Child Benefit? They like playing different rules for different folks dont they!

ChickenLickn · 12/02/2012 17:11

There won't be a middle class if this continues. I am not joking, this is a direct attack on the middle classes. The hint is in the tuition fees hike.

It is "divide and rile" politics.

ChickenLickn · 12/02/2012 17:14

"Rile" is really quite accurate!

ChickenLickn · 12/02/2012 18:40

The hint is also in the NHS "reforms". Health costs have decimated the middle classes in America. One illness/disability in the family can bankrupt them and then they are standing in line at the charity food bank.

ThePinkPussycat · 12/02/2012 18:41

Can someone tell me the thread? cba too busy to hunt [ahem]

CardyMow · 12/02/2012 19:46

In a way, I'm glad it's not just me - tbh I thought I was being a bit paranoid at first, until I realised that only certain sites were blocked to me...

ChickenLickn · 12/02/2012 19:57

Carernotasaint - that was good, it made it real to people who felt that workfare didn't apply to them. But there are many middle class, graduate children who are getting caught up in the workfare scheme and being forced to work without a wage. Harder to achieve a good standard of living if you are not being paid.

MmeLindor. · 12/02/2012 23:42

Sorry I am not about, just too busy with the move.

ThePinkPussycat · 12/02/2012 23:43

Found the thread - I was watching it already it turned out - and just had a froth on it.

yummymummyreally · 13/02/2012 12:39

Afternoon TeWiHara et al! I've been on the frothers site this morning trying to tidy up the tags and create a bit of a site summary page to direct people to the main 'subjects' that are being discussed on there.

I still have a couple of tag tidy ups to do, but it's 90% there. Can someone please take a look? The new page I've added lists the main subjects. (I trawled through all the posts on their and categorised them, adding new tags where required).

I've left existing tags on posts, because they will help with anyone using the search box, which I've added to the right.

But for new posts, can we ensure to add one of the 'main subject' tags to each, so they get picked up by this page. It should happen automatically as long as the 'tags are right. When you write a post, and start to write a tag, if it auto-completes and gives you an option to click, it means it's a tag in existence already - which is better to use, so please click that. It doesn't stop you adding all manor of other tags though (up to 20 maximum)!

I'm still not happy with how the page 'looks' but I am reasonably happy with what it's doing (does that make sense!?) I'd be happy if it were in thumbnail form with pictures and captions to click instead of just text? Anyone got a free picture source? I use Kozzi, and it isn't that great.

I've incorporated the all posts page into this new page, so there aren't too many pages across the top, as it makes them hide under the little menu on the top right. BUT, If someone knows how to adjust this so we can perhaps keep the 'all posts' list on a separate page, then it would probably work better as the list grows!

yummymummyreally · 13/02/2012 12:56

goodness... my brain must be fried if I can't even type 'there' instead of 'their! sorry!

ChickenLickn · 13/02/2012 21:26

This is where we are heading. warning - distressing

minimathsmouse · 14/02/2012 01:34

Yes we are headed in that direction too. We have been for quite some time.
High unemployment and an unregulated black economy of migrant slave labour. See any parallels? America has been exploiting migrant labour on slave wages for many years especially in agriculture. Food stamps are issued because the companies don?t even pay a subsistence wage. Here we have a similar situation developing with the introduction of tax credits and open boarders.
Before you jump on me thinking I?m a ?right? looney, I am simply saying big companies have exploited low waged labour to create greater profit and then relied on the government to provide the people with the very means to consume the efforts of their own labour. Now governments are running huge deficits they can?t subsidise this lie. So unemployment is spiralling, the double whammy for us Brits is the fact that we have a right wing party hell bent on the destruction of the welfare state, making thousands of state workers unemployed , dismantling the NHS and every other marker of a decent humane society. The effects so far have been to push us towards another ressession and still they look to America as some great example, so much so that Dave and Co want to create am American style health and welfare state here.
F*ing mess! America should be shown up to be what it is, the opposite of a modern human society.
