WTF are Frothers? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Fighting for the "basic line of British decency" against fiscal brutality.

What are Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Come and join us.

Ok, as you were.

CardyMow · 25/01/2012 19:31

So we don't have to pay to use the CSA? But if our cooker breaks, we are fucked if our maintenance is going to cover the repair.

Does anyone know if maintenance received will be deducted from the benefits cap? I can't find anywhere on t'internet that has a definitive answer.

TeWihara · 25/01/2012 19:33

this is fab also "Why is clegg so quiet on #wrb it's like polishing ur prefect badge in the bog while big fight breaks out in the corridor" from twitter

TeWihara · 25/01/2012 19:34

No Hunty I don't. You could try contacting Gingerbread and asking.

However, I expect like PIP it'll be one of those things they haven't decided on yet.

HTF you can vote on whether you agree with something whose details haven't been decided is beyond me but there you go.

KatieMiddleton · 25/01/2012 19:50

I've put the kettle on over on the sanctuary thread. And there is virtual gin. I am about to partake of RL wine

KatieMiddleton · 25/01/2012 19:52

Btw Gingerbread use Workfare. As do lots of other charities I think a lot of Sad

JSA claimants who the jobcentre have told must do it rather than volunteers?
Seriously?! Sad

Hi. I really like the idea of navigation through the posts by subject - as Te said, the tags should do it but they're a bit all over the place really.

But I'm drawing back from Frothing. My life is crumbling to bits and this intense anxiety isn't helping. I'm no Sue Marsh, sadly, neither do I have anyone to help me.

I keep obsessing over it all - justifiably, but I'm not "needed" while you lot are around Grin I had an idea for a sort of Tetris-style game, where you could move bits of budget around to see what happened ... then realised I was attempting to do socio-economic modelling on a blog post! This must stop Blush

If somebody else could identify the posts relevant to each subject, I can turn the subjects into a menu - basically doing what tags are supposed to do. The most rational approach, in fact, would be to re-tag all the posts with their subjects (uniformly). Then Blogger will do the work.

Can I just say I think toomanycuts.blogspot.com is getting better and better? It deserves maximum exposure!

I'm off to vacuum a few squares of carpet (still getting to grips with this energy-rationing malarkey ... spoons and all that), watch a bit of brain candy and have an early night. Sorry, Frothers :(

Keep my luxury picket open!!

Garlic
Sorry that you are feeling bad. What do you mean "not needed"? Without you there would be no blog. You are brilliant. I thought I was not bad at the techy stuff but I am hopeless compared to you.

Arse to the Social Fund.

Excuse me for butting in, dear frothers... but if any of you are available on 3rd Feb, in London, there is a 'benefits camp' going on... basically for anyone who wants to fix.hack/change/improve the benefits system. I wasn't sure whether to post it here, or on the donkey jacket thread... but I'm sure you'll know what to do! (reg under nc here, sorry, not a frother actually, but I'm sure some of you would be able to contribute)

Haberdashery · 25/01/2012 20:58

I had an idea for a sort of Tetris-style game, where you could move bits of budget around to see what happened

There was a brilliant interactive thing on the Guardian website like that a while back.

Very sorry to hear your life is being difficult, garlic. Hope it bucks its ideas up.

OpinionatedMum · 25/01/2012 20:58

Garlic Don't slip away come back when you are feeling better.

CardyMow · 25/01/2012 22:23

How do you hide a thread? For the first time in 7 years on MN, I HAVE to hide a thread for my own sanity.

MmeLindor. · 25/01/2012 22:35

Sorry you are upset, Hunty. I think these past few days have been hard for many of the Frothers. Too many threads and too many idiots.

Think you can find the hide thread button when you are in Threads I'm On

PattiMayor · 25/01/2012 22:41

If you go to active convos, you can click hide under any thread you don't like the look of. I've hidden about 10 today. I'm not coping very well with it all either and I'm so sorry that your eloquence and honesty is making you feel under attack :(

Scarletbanner · 25/01/2012 22:53

You wonder how on earth The Tories can be ahead in the polls, when the economy is on the edge of another recession and their economic policies are making it worse. How can people not realise??

Then you read some of these threads and it makes sense. And makes you want to despair. Sad and fight. Angry

sunshineandbooks · 25/01/2012 22:53

Sorry you're feeling attacked Hunty. There are some pretty vile views floating around at the mo and you and Peachy seem to have borne the brunt of them. Sad

CardyMow · 25/01/2012 22:57

I expect it of Alouisee, we have come across each other many times before, I just hadn't seen her about for a while though. She hasn't been THAT personal before though! Hope Peachy is OK. I have hidden that thread now, and am trying desperately to stay in chat on 'light' threads for a bit, away from the others I have in active convo's. I may yet hide those too...

OpinionatedMum · 25/01/2012 23:13

I just flicked through that thread, I didn't see what got said, but later on someone mentioned abortion. Did she tell you you should have aborted? Shock

KnottyLocks · 25/01/2012 23:15

Hunty & Garlic, have a lovely big hug. I haven't seen all the shite of today as have been pretty busy with work.

I'll try to catch up asap.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 26/01/2012 06:55

I'm sorry you had a hard time on here yesterday Garlic and Hunty, and by the sounds of to Peachy too, and that things are bad, hug from me too. There is never a call for personal attacks. Too much shit has been spouted on too many threads recently, some really nasty bashing and spite. MN does not feel so good at the moment. Hiding threads is possibly the way forward as there is no point trying to engage with a brick wall.

I didn't know that Gingerbread used Workfare? Bloody hell, Tesco and Argos. you can see why they get stuck in and take advantage, but am really shocked by Gingerbread. Seems totally inappropriate of them doesn't it?

So dark this morning, am struggling to believe it can be time to get up!
Sadly it is. Off to the shower, catch up later.

yummymummyreally · 26/01/2012 07:37

garlic. That's ok garlic...I knew that's probably what you meant, ...and giving of assets to Monaco!! I wish!!

I am sooo...behind, only on page 3of 13, so I may have to skim read...and definitely won't be venturing off to the other thread as it sounds scary and depressing.

One of the things I love about frothers is the research that goes into it. There is much more of an open attitude, and a sense the facts are checked before the spouting commences....

Still here in the background.... Grumbling quietly and trying to educate my peers..

TeWihara · 26/01/2012 10:48

Just to let you know I'm also going to have a little breather, anyone who didn't see on the donkey jacket thread I found out yesterday a friend of mine is in a coma.

Which is horrific, but adding to that knowing so much about thw wrb and how utterly fucked they will be if his wife can't manage to pay the mortgage on their own...

it's just too much right now.

If I have time I will do the post about the protest + the welfare conference tonight, otherwise that's it from me for a while.
