WTF are Frothers? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Fighting for the "basic line of British decency" against fiscal brutality.

What are Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Come and join us.

Oh, Te, I'm so sorry for your friend and that this is affecting you too.

Thank goodness some of Mumsnet's finest are still here! Frothing can continue with vigour! Anyone who needs a blog login, please PM MmeL, me or one of the other writers.

Yummy, thanks for what you said above - it's what makes me so proud of Frothers. The bare facts are so eloquent, they don't need dressing up (something our media prefer to ignore.)

Garlic - just wanted to add my encouragement too - you do a great job.

I have no spoons today but am frothing wildly with all these articles all over the place and what George Carey said to the bishops and this article which shows how the new PiP rules will mean thousands will lose motability and blue badges etc etc :( Aaaagh. There is so much ignorance out there on all those threads. Glad we have this safe place to come to.

Te - I am so sorry :(

MmeLindor. · 26/01/2012 13:33

MNBloggers asked me to do an update on the CSA thing so I think they will promote it a bit. If you see it on Twitter, do give it a nudge.

Will add some Frother links.

Got to go and clean the house cause we have visitors due but will try and get back on later.

Te
Thinking of you and your friend. ((hugs))

TeWihara · 26/01/2012 13:53

Mme - had a sneaky read of your thread (because apparently I am crap at having a break!) I think you made a typo should it be "it was estimated maintenance payments of that £6 million a year went unpaid. Half a million pounds would be very well invested in that case." Currently is says billion.

madhair - those examples are awful. How can having LOST a leg mean you're not dusabled enough for a mobility car ffs.

MmeLindor. · 26/01/2012 14:08

Thanks, Te. Don't know what happened there, but have found the blog I meant to link to and it is £3bn.

TeWihara · 26/01/2012 14:21

That definately makes more sense!

yummymummyreally · 26/01/2012 17:11

Just seen the disembowelling thread for benefit bashing. Initially amused at The idea...nice and fair for those of similar views to be able to grumble together and liked the tongue in cheek element.. Then somewhat scared by level of obvious venom in some posts that weren't being sarcastic... Oh dear... Still in process of backtracking and catching up on this thread, but this page isn't making me hopeful. Sending big hugs out to all those in need. Blush

toomanycuts.blogspot.com/2012/01/civil-disobedience-anyone.html

I've added the physical actions, give it a read, there's some really interesting stuff going in the next few days AND this bill goes back to House of Commons on February 1st - so apparently we can't have a rest even if we want to...

garlicfrother · 26/01/2012 23:33

I'm going to catch up ... tomorrow Grin

Benefits & Work has published a PIP self-test (free access) here.

OP posts:
HarrietJones · 27/01/2012 07:46

FGS at the PIP test. I've worked with loads of people with SLD who would only get 6 points. Someone I'm supporting at the moment would get 3 but gets DLA

ThePinkPussycat · 27/01/2012 13:06

Hi all, I might have been RudolphthePinknosedReindeer when I last posted. Been snowed under with divorce stuff, also posting a lot in Relationships and in Mental Health. Also doing mh service user involvement work - particularly with our regional network, North East together.

So haven't even been lurking here, however I am back, prompted by reading Benefits and Work survey on likely effect of PIP(am a member and get e-letter). They put a warning up not to read the comments from participants on how they think they will be affected unless you are in a good state, and they were right. I was in a good state (and it doesn't affect me) but it is grim reading.

At the end of the report is this charming paragraph, which seems to blame the carers!

David Rogers, chair of the Local Government Association's Community Wellbeing Board, said: "As this report highlights, the sad reality is that many carers don't recognise themselves as such and fail to seek the support to which they are rightly entitled, and which is widely available through their local authority."

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/01/2012 16:52

Loved this link from another thread - from before the election.

Wankers!

TeWihara · 27/01/2012 17:03

It's really Hmm isn't it TPP? I see a lot of flyers for carers of people with dementia here, but that's it.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/01/2012 17:21

All these people missing out on support they really need and yet all the focus seems to go on bashing Sad

KatieMiddleton · 27/01/2012 19:17

hahahahahaha! That video is awesome.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 27/01/2012 20:13

Katie - I love that video - right made me chortle!
Grin

Now I took my post off because when I re read it it didn't sound at all as I meant it Blush Gin time I think.....

KnottyLocks · 27/01/2012 21:13

Evening, lovelies Smile

All rather busy at base camp so haven't been around much. Sorry . Still frothing though!

CardyMow · 28/01/2012 02:34

Give a benefits cap supporter enough rope, and they'll hang themselves...

I'm about to post a quote from MrsHeffley here (sorry). But I just want to giggle at the fact that she has, inadvertantly proved HERSELF to be wrong for supporting the benefits cap...

'Sorry £35K is way too low to stop CB.For many people on that bracket it's the difference between heating and not.I'm no expert but I would have thought £60 K would be better.Far more likely to not be a serious impact on all families and they wouldn't need to pay to means test it.'. A quote from MrsHeffley on pg4.

Sooooooo...she is saying that stopping CB for someone on a pre-tax income of £35k is too low. Which is the equivalent of them stopping CB for someone getting the maximum, £26k in Universal Credit without CB, due to their rent...

madhairday · 28/01/2012 12:50

ffs at that PiP test. If that is how it is going to be done there is no room whatsoever for fluctuating conditions. How do you fill it in if one week you can do all those things and the next none of them? It's so scary. I will lose dla for sure under those criteria. It's appalling :(

Haven't felt much up to frothing in past few days due to being unwell but with you all in spirit.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/01/2012 13:08

So Oxford Circus is completely blocked by disability rights campaigners, lots on Twitter - has it been covered by the news? Nothing on the BBC website yet Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/01/2012 13:16

There is an article about the demonstration tucked away in politics now on the BBC website, not v prominent at the mo, hopefully there is more coverage elsewhere?

TheHumancatapult · 28/01/2012 13:21

i have just posted this in chat and poltics bit light hearted but serious to

hats right im going to be cured and get right out my wheelchair and be the same as everyone else

yes with a stroke of a pen .Someone is going to cure what even science can not cure , dam lazy drs why did they not think of thatwink

Under the propsed PIP rules wheelchair users will no longer be entitled to help as apparentley now we have a wheelchair, we no longer have any moblity problems

This is despite the fact the nhs wheelchairs are not up to the job
I was informed by WCS that there concern is not how you cna mange outdoors they only need to make sure you can wheel around indoors

To catch a train we have to give 24 hrs notice and we can only catch the train at the time we have booked it for ( erm freedom of choice not ) .
So if we miss the train for what ever reasson then we could be stuck as they do not have to put us on it
oh and no arriving last minute we are expected to be there 30 mins before hand
Trains often have 1 maybe 2 wheelchair spaces on them .so if another one is in there or bikes or luggage or a pram chances are your be dumped inbetween 2 carriages

And dont forget all trains stations are not accessibile .ANd we shall advoid mentioning London underground

?Buses

Well that all depends are they accessible everywhere answer is no
Do they have a ramp becuase low floor not always good no
if they have a ramp will it always work or will the driver be willing to get out the seat to lower it no spot the theame herewink
will we try to board the bus and find out can not becuase a buggy in there YES

Cars

Now when your legs dont work this tend to cause problems with driving ,( check next time what people do with those pesky leg thinsg in a car )

So often moblity side goes for an adapted car with hand controls so we can advoid the above issues

Oh and we all know that the world or even the uk is exactly flat and smooth footpaths and proper dropped Kerbs no

Answer is the only flat smooth surfaces is inside shopping centres but you got to ge there first see above .

home manvouers

Now you want to try omething sit on a computer chair ask someone to tie your legs together and without moving them at all or putting them down get onto your couch .oh and dont bum shuffle or wiggle as thats cheating I can see you wink

then try repeating it back from the couch , This is the time when you pray your neighbour can not peep through your window and think you got into bondagegrin If they blush next time you see them consider they ahve seen you

if you mastered that one , now on the chair again grab hoover with both hands and hoover , well the 1 m reach in front of you becuase it is kinda tricky to move when you need both hands to do that , but you cant becuase your holding the hoover ( throwing it does not count )

phew after that you need a coffee or something pick kettle up in hand uhoh only one hand to get around mange it fill water balance carefully back to tap

yay empty cup well thats easy , fill cup with boiling water argh one hand thing again , try moving carefully

spill hotwater downself argh great not only does your neighbour think your indulging in bondage in the afternoon .Now you going look like you wet yourself

Bugger it grab bottle of wine stay stilll open aid bottle and have a drink and be greatful that you do not need to do every day

Now thats light hearted look and not even covered what it is really like but still think the new proposall to PIP are fare the cuts to DLA

cityhobgoblin · 28/01/2012 13:33

Very effective post , HumanCatapult - and as you say that's thea light-hearted side of thindsSad.

IMO the BBC noit covering today's demo adequately isvery much par for the course - they recently actively "spun" a demo I was on to make it appear as if the threat of violence came from the anti-fascist counter-demo , not from the well-known racist organisation ...Many similar instances , just using an example in which I saw for myself from which quarters violence was being threatened . If the BBC can misrepresent serious violence , do we not think them capable of doing the same with the cuts debate , demos etc
