What are Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Come and join us.

Oh that's fine Stewie - I'll have a quick play with the formatting and I might quickly change the post orders so the summary one stays the most recent.

sunshineandbooks · 25/01/2012 11:25

Thanks TeWihara.

I wish I could get an accurate idea of what the real mood of the country is about this. Most of the press is right-wing, so you'd be forgiven for thinking that everyone is behind the govt on this, though fortunately most of the people I meet in RL are very anti cuts. I can't decide which is a more true reflection.

I read a variety of papers online but the DM today is particularly shocking. Talk about inciting hatred! I wish there was enough there to mount a legal challenge.

Articles about how 8 in 10 disability claimants are fit for work (with a not-so-subtle inference that they are all therefore lying spongers). Completely bypassing the fact that when people appeal, they often win. My aunt is an example of that. 9 months she was left without benefits despite being autistic and incapable of living independently. Yet she was assessed as 'fit to work'.

Articles about 'fed-up, hard-working tax payers' (yeah well I'm a fed-up, hard-working tax payer too, but I'm fed up with the govt, not the claimants) and what 'you'd have to earn to get £26,000' etc. Grrrr.

Articles about how the Lords are loons (ok that's open to debate Wink) because they dared challenge the cap. God forbid that it might be because they have compassion and realise that this will devastate people's lives for NO GOOD REASON.

Preaching to the converted really aren't I...

CardyMow · 25/01/2012 11:27

I'll write up a post with my story tonight. I can only pop in and out at the moment, as DS2 won't be at school for the forseeable future (roughly a month), and I am having to help him with the worksheets the school have sent home. So I will just pop in and out of MN when I have the time.

I am in awe of how HE'ers manage on a permanant basis, especially when they have younger dc!

That's another barrrier to me getting and keeping employment - what employer is going to be happy with me taking 4-5 weeks off at a time when DS2 can't attend school because he is immune-compromised due to his other meds? It happens at least once a year, sometimes more. Yet he isn't disabled enough to qualify for DLA. Hmm. And it doesn't cause me ANY barriers to getting and keeping employment, him being unable to attend school for over a month at a time...

garlicfrother · 25/01/2012 11:28

This is where the converted discuss preaching ... Rants are inevitable!

all done.

BTW - I agree that we should have a page which groups the posts together.

The tags are supposed to do this, but tbh I keep forgetting Blush and we don't always use the same tags. I'm not sure how well it works in a multi-author blog.

TeWihara · 25/01/2012 11:46

Today is the last day of HoL stuff so we can have a break and look at the site layout then... ready for the next round

CardyMow · 25/01/2012 11:52

TeWi - how do I watch the proceedings in the HoL? Would it be BBC on the net or something?

TeWihara · 25/01/2012 11:57

I posted about it on the blog Wink

You can watch live here at the HoL site there is a BBC link, but it often seems to be broken

More on the planned protest here UK Uncut are supporting it

CardyMow · 25/01/2012 12:08

I didn't see it on the blog. Not very observant though. Usually read the blog posts and then come back here and start frothing...

TeWihara · 25/01/2012 15:44

For today's debates from G live blog: "The key votes today are likely to take place around 5.30pm (the one on the social fund) and 6.45pm (the one on the Child Support Agency)."

CardyMow · 25/01/2012 15:45

ARGH! Right at blooming dinnertime!

OpinionatedMum · 25/01/2012 16:20

UKUncut action- Some elderly and disabled people are planning a "daring act of civil disobedience" and ukuncut supporters are asked to turn up at holborn station with a charged up oyster card to support them.

I am dying to know what they are up to-i hope it gets truth out there about what the govt are really up to. That's if the media give it fair coverage.A big if IMO.

OpinionatedMum · 25/01/2012 16:22

I am going to be beyond pissed of at 5:30- i just wish i could get to Holborn on saturday.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/01/2012 16:28

Really hope it is covered properly OM - it had been undercover for a while, but I believe it was being talked about in the Guardian today, so hopefully this will help get people there.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/01/2012 16:55

There was a nasty old fire not so far from us the other night, and on the local twitter they were talking about the problem of accommodation and exploitation by unscrupulous landlords. Essentially beds in sheds. Inappropriate accommodation being used that are total fire traps. That's shite isn't it? And one can only imagine that this sort of thing will happen more and more

There is a bit here from the London Fire Brigade about it.

TeWihara · 25/01/2012 17:01

One of the MN posters (MrsDeVere) has a bungalow gym in the neighbours garden which all the planning people know is blatantly a bed in shed situation, but it seems bizarely hard to do anything about it.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/01/2012 17:51

The social fund has gone

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/01/2012 17:58

the ultimate safety net then has gone from earlier today

KatieMiddleton · 25/01/2012 18:04

Fuckers Angry

TeWihara · 25/01/2012 18:04

Just coming here to say that.

I hate stupid arsing politics. whipping should be illegal Angry

RatherBeOnThePiste · 25/01/2012 18:10

Te - me too.

I hate this picking on those who need the most support. This really was the last line of defence for many families, it should never have been cut. It just shows how out of touch they are.Angry

TeaSleepFood · 25/01/2012 18:15

Ok, I know this is an important thread with lots of meaningful rants, but...
I really misread it and thought frothers was weird eventuallity brought on by too much fiscal. Oh the irony.Wink

sunshineandbooks · 25/01/2012 19:18

This is going to cause so much hardship. Sad

TeWihara · 25/01/2012 19:28

Well that's one thing - We won on CSA Grin

TeaSleepFood ha! I never noticed... erm... yes no frothing of that nature.
