WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

I know tis only a poll, but Ken has taken the lead over Boris in the London Mayoral election

KatieMiddleton · 19/01/2012 15:40

Hello. I am around and have been reading but it takes me about 20 minutes to open this thread on my phone and it's hit and miss if a post goes through.

I'm sure I don't need to say that Nadine Dorries is a dangerous fanatic and has no place in parliament. Abortion Rights are a group that are all over any of her nonsense. You can follow them on Twitter @abortion_rights

When we get to the end of this thread can we have two threads please? One for frothers' activism (blogging, organising etc) and one that is a frothers' sanctuary. I think we've lost a few people because they feel they shouldn't be here if they're not doing something and a few are feeling a bit down with the frothing. One for business and one for fun if you like Grin

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2012 15:45

Norries linky

Utterly bonkers.

And, unsurprisingly, the bill ignores what the experts in Sex Ed have to say.

It was passed on the first reading Shock

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2012 15:47

There's an e-petition demanding that Norries be gone. Not bloody surprised.

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2012 15:48

She'll be advocating chastity belts next then.

molepom · 19/01/2012 16:01

Will I be right in thinking that they will impose a ban on 3 or more children to each family soon? Like China?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2012 16:03

Shock I cannot believe it passed the first time round. Well I can, when you see who she wheeled out to vote.

She and her socially conservative, Christian-dominated, anti-choice, All Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group have no place in our schools and need to leave our children well alone. Better than that, they can fuck off!

Surely this won't go any further?

TeWihara · 19/01/2012 16:07

There have been proposals to cut the amount of benefits you get for each child from the 3rd onwards, (eg, only 75% of amount for 3rd, 50% for 4th) but not heard of any of it being passed/written in.

JuliaScurr · 19/01/2012 16:52

Selective culling is sure to follow

ValarMorghulis · 19/01/2012 16:52

I know you are allowed to have an income of £20 per week before it affects your benefits. Not entirely sure about CSA/Maintenance though.

So long as those limits are for people who are on out of work benefits, and only apply to children conceived after their claim for benefits....well, i can see the reasoning.

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 17:01

Good idea, with two threads. Like the Frothers' Sanctuary.

Shall we put that one in OTBT?

OP posts:
TeWihara · 19/01/2012 17:01

I think the options I saw just said the rules applied for any child born more than 9mths after the law was made.

Which is pretty unfair IMO, if you were loaded and had 6 children, then due to, I dunno a massive housefire your partner dies and you loose your income capped contributions could make quite a big impact.

OTOH extra children cost less than the first one anyway so I would think it was fair to have a general reduction on those grounds.

KatieMiddleton · 19/01/2012 17:05

Frothers' Sanctuary must be findable to lure everyone back. It is for gentle frothing, bosom hoiking, fun, tea and sympathy.

Forthers' Activism in OTBT because that is a bit drier and we don't want knobbers pitching up trying to piss on our chips with their "the poor and disabled have had it good for too long" rubbish.

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2012 17:23

Good idea, Katie. We can always send a PM to direct them them to OTBT.

No idea why I keep calling that woman Norries instead of Dorries. I think it's my subliminal no no no no no shouting out.

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 17:43

Am halfway through the blog post, will finish it later, but have had a shiteola afternoon.

Spoke to the school office, and they have active cases of chickenpox at the school. As DS2 is on prednisolone and is immune-suppressed, and has to avoid contact with anyone with chickenpox for the next 3-4 weeks after his course of pred finishes on Sunday, he will be off school until half-term.

AND my 6 year-old dyson has just broken. I will now have to pay to get it repaired, as it is out of the 5-year guarantee. Bolleaux.

I have NOT had a great start to 2012...

ValarMorghulis · 19/01/2012 17:44

My knickers are twisted high enough that they meet the hoiked busom.

But what, pray tell, is OTBT?

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 17:50

Off The Beaten Track. It's a fairly hidden section of Mumsnet, that is un-googlable.

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 17:51

Is Googlable, or un-googlable, even a proper word??! I may have just made up my own word there, but YKWIM!

ValarMorghulis · 19/01/2012 17:54

oh.
Do you need to be a special vip member to know these things? Is there a code on the door? Will i need to be "vouched for"?

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 17:56

Nah, it's just that those of us who spend far too much time on MN know about it. Lives whole life through MN.

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 17:57

Must go dish up dinner now, will be back in a bit.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2012 17:59

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what OTBT is!
Blush

HedleyLamarr · 19/01/2012 18:21

@THemingford not only RTd me but he favorited it. 'Twas the one about Mark Steel's Indy article on ATOS. I am beyond chuffed. BlushGrin

Nilgiri · 19/01/2012 19:17

I might be missing something, but I don't get the point of going in OTBT?

There are plenty of threads kicking the shit out of people on benefits all over MN (tho less than in the real world). So visible supportive threads are actually a very good thing - and educational for those who wander in.

And the wonderful thing about the #frothers threads is that they're not just disabled people fighting on their own - which as Hunty's illustrated so well we often can't do.

And sorry, I'm still not posting much here - but I'm lurking and taking courage and carrying what's being said into other areas. You've no idea how much joy it brings to my little heart to see these threads in Active Convos, after so much other campaigning stuff has run out of steam.

garlicfrother · 19/01/2012 20:34

:) me too, Nilgiri.
