WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

If you #frother it, anybody who sees the blog will see it.

You click on other tweeters and 'follow' them. It's that simple. If you tell us who you are, we can all follow us and you can follow us back Grin

From there, it networks - I retweet you, my followers see it, some will them follow you and so it goes. It is a very clever machine, if annoying.

Right. Sorry for my absence yesterday. I was in hospital with DS2 on Nebs, as the PCT in my area has NO budget for home nebs for children. Hmm. His asthma is awful, I've already had to find £300 for a HEPA air filter for his bedroom, £30 every 6 months for new filters for it, AND the extra £10 a week electric it costs to run the thing. (It HAS kept him out of hospital for 2 years, until last night). But his asthma isn't a disability, and doesn't cost me any extra money to deal with...

And to top it off, the paed respiritory Consultant advised me last night to PERSONALLY BUY a nebuliser for him. At a cost of £300. Because my DS2 needs one, and the PCT don't fund them for children. Angry . FFS! DS2's dad has agreed to pay half the costs IF I can raise half myself. Which I can't right now. I'm going to apply to the family fund too, to see if THEY can help.

The reason for the Court order is that my DS1's father has quite a lot of access, including a school-night overnight every week, AND he picks him up from school every other Friday. Because my Ex-H's step-son attends the (current) same primary AND his 2yo son attends the on-site pre-school, I am NOT allowed to change my DS1's school. What this means in practice is that I cannot move further away from the school if I cannot access it by public transport. I HAVE to use public transport because I can't drive due to my epilepsy.

I was told last time that I tried to get the PSO changed that it would NOT be changed unless I was willing to do ALL the transportation of my DS1 to his contact with his dad, WITHIN A TIME LIMIT THAT IS ONLY POSSIBLE BY CAR, because I would be classed as in breach of my court order otherwise.

You also have to realise that my Ex-H (and his new partner) are VERY controlling, and would NOT relinquish a single SECOND of the current contact without a fight. And my Ex-H's family would pay for a really good solicitor for him, while I wouldn't have a penny in Legal Aid to fight it now.

I personally think that the PSO order on me is against the DDA - as I can't drive due to my disability - but the chance of anyone taking that on pro-bono? HAhahaha.

I know I am not doing that much actual Frothing right now - but it's difficult when life keeps throwing you curve balls, and you're just trying to get through each day as it comes. I guess that's the reason WHY a lot of these changes are getting pushed through - because some of us are just too damn busy surviving to have the time to fight ! I have a few (sort of, with DS2 at home, on maximum inhalers ^and pred) hours during the day today where I really really WILL try my best to get the UC blog post written up. I am going to change it slightly, to make it seem as if we are talking about real-life people, even though it will be a fictitional family, I think this way will make it seem more 'real' to the people reading the calculations than just a bunch of figures.

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 09:51

Oh, bugger Hunty. Poor you. Hope that your DS is feeling better today.

That is a truly shite thing that your ex is doing. What an utter arse of a wanker. (sorry, bit sweary today, but think this deserves it).

I would post in legal on MN and see if you can get some advice.

Don't worry about a blog post.

I know you did not post here to blag money, but I would be happy to send you a small donation towards the nebuliser.

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 10:16

It's fine. I'm going to try the Family Fund. I know they have helped people in my area gets nebulisers before.

Blog post figures are all on my laptop, just got to put them together into something more coherent. DS2 is going to watch a dvd he has been waiting to see, DS3 will be out with his dad, and I CBA to do housework tbh...

ValarMorghulis · 19/01/2012 10:17

ok. So i joined. My name is ValarMorghulis original huh?

I did the twitter teach thingy and clicked follow to a few of the people it suggested.

I typed in #frothers and followed a couple of the people who had put that in their status too.

is that right? or do i have to do something else?

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 10:18

Been there, nothing can be done about the PSO. If anything, PSO's like this are becoming MORE common, not less. Mine has just been in force for quite a while (6 years now).

ValarMorghulis · 19/01/2012 10:19

i lied, im ValarMorghulis2

i hadn't realised they put a 2 on the end

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 10:21

If you, say, follow HuntyCat (another original one here Grin ) , then you can follow people that I am following IYSWIM.

I am also technologically inept. I have had a LOT of people talk me through how to do blog posts etc on here. I can do it now. Hope I haven't forgotten when I go to post this one though.

ValarMorghulis · 19/01/2012 11:02

Right, I think i have you Hunty.

mmelindor said my name in her update. I felt all famous!

now, if we follow someone do we need them to accept us? like on facebook? Because in the teacher bit when i joined it asked me to follow a load of random celebs. If i @ and their name can i talk to them?

Was thinking we could try and message a few celebs who have links to disabilities. One of the people i was encouraged to follow was Wayne Rooney...odd choice i know, but i am sure Coleens sister is disabled?

CardyMow · 19/01/2012 11:13

Right. DS2 ensconsed before the TV god, and DS3 out with Daddy to visit the hag Nanny. ( serious ex-MIL issues!)

I shall open up word and do something with the UC blog post. Wish me luck!

ValarMoghulis - I'll get to Twitter later, I promise!

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 11:53

Valar
they don't need to accept your follow, but they can block you if they don't like you, or if you antagonise them.

I am not a fan of tweeting slebs and asking for support, as I don't think it is effective and you could well be banned for spamming people.

More effective is following others who campaign on similar issues.

The best result I have had was when I took that comment about Tesco's profits and workfare and tweeted it. It got RTed a LOT.

If you can think of a snappy one-liner and link to blog with the #frothers hashtag, it could get passed on.

OP posts:
OpinionatedMum · 19/01/2012 11:55

You can follow who you like if their account is open. If you see a closed account with a key it looks like you send a request for them to accept/reject.

ValarMorghulis · 19/01/2012 12:02

right. I think i get it.

James Cordon (i know i know) tweeted something about everything starting from today. I replied by saying "i agree. lets maket today the day we stand up to the governments lies [link to petition] #frothers"

will that be classed as spam then? Im not very good with snappy one liners. I waffle. Been trying to think of something succinct and witty.

i am failing

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 12:06

Val
I think that might be construed as spam, if the person reports it. It hinges on a few things really. What you wrote, if you send the same text to loads of slebs, I think links are another flag.

here are the Twitter rules on spam

Communicate with other users, not with slebs who get so many @ messages that I doubt that they even look at their mentions column.

Don't worry, you are not useless, it is just confusing at first.

ValarMorghulis · 19/01/2012 12:09

oops.

Oh well. At least if they throw me off now i haven't lost much Grin

TeWihara · 19/01/2012 15:00

this is fairly off-topic, but can I ask about csa/maintenance/blah blah

I have a friend whose ex is an abusive dickhead difficult, since they broke up he's not paid her more than £20pw maintenance... he said this is because if he paid more it would just be taken off her benefits (I suspect this isn't true?) now she has moved in with a new much nicer partner he has suddenly decided he can't afford to give her anything. Hmm
Since he's a full time student, if she tried to persue him via the CSA would they just agree that he doesn't have to pay? Or would they look at assets etc? He is very wealthy and could live comfortably without ever getting a job...

KnottyLocks · 19/01/2012 15:10

Has anyone seen the Bill that Nadine Norries is tabling tomorrow? Unbloodybelieveable.

She wants Sex Education in schools to consist of teaching teenage girls to abstain, basically until marriage. That's it. ONLY the girls.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2012 15:27

I have only heard some stuff about that Knots - abstinence education for girls and that is essentially it. So girls are the only ones to have any responsibility? Boys have nothing to do with this then? Loon. How bloody mad. This has been around before, hasn't there already been a vote on it once? Do you have a linky?

TeWihara · 19/01/2012 15:31

I thought it had already been rejected?

I guess she must have amended the bill if she's submitting it again, but makes me wonder why she thinks it will get voted through this time.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2012 15:32

How can she think the boys should be excluded from this? Madness innit?

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 15:39

Te
You need shirley in CSA but as far as I know, maintenance is disregarded when working out benefits. She should through CSA now though, before the changes come into place

Knotty
That is quite simply nuts. Daft woman.
