WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Bread and water, Julia.

Maybe a jelly baby once a week. But just one.

Good grief. Just how thick would one have to be to be jealous of carers and disabled children?? I know this stuff is pervasive but I'm still shocked to read comments like that.

Some people must have no empathy if they cannot put themselves even a tiny bit in the shoes of someone else and would begrudge a few things that make a difference especially when the top 1% or whatever it is have more wealth than all the rest of us put together why do we tolerate picking on those who are at a greater disadvantage? It's shameful.

Glitter you are quite amazing. Pay no heed to the haterz. We're socially conditioned to find anything other than models in the public eye strange and deficient. Normal is no longer considered normal sadly. I'm sure in the flesh you're much better looking. I take a really bad photo but I'm fine filmed or live and I'm v average looking.

Just heard Maria Miller v Sue Marsh on WatO R4
Go Sue!

HedleyLamarr · 17/01/2012 14:10

I heard it too Julia, just about everything that came out of Miller's gob was either lies or misinformation. Got my fingers crossed for the HOL debate and vote.

KnottyLocks · 17/01/2012 14:33

I'm getting a wee bit fed up of this idea that we should let the gov get on with it without interference. That's it's none of our business if we are not directly affected by policy changes. Absolute bloody bollocks.

How on earth can you let dubious and, frankly, criminal activities go unchallenged when there is the option to protest? What is the point of having a democracy and free speech?

I obviously have had too much coffee and too little sleep today Grin

Glitterz, you and your family look gorgeous x

OM's Housing post: toomanycuts.blogspot.com/2012/01/hidden-housing-crisis-impending.html
:)

garlicfrother · 17/01/2012 15:47

I know, Knotty. I suspect Britain's become so used to having a reasonably open, reasonably fair government, it's forgotten how to complain!

OpinionatedMum · 17/01/2012 15:55

thanks garlicfrother.Smile

Am catching up as far back as Fregley?s attempt to shit stir. Angry

The cuts the coalition are attempting to make are shocking and inhumane, and whilst they may not affect us personally, why on earth would that mean we don?t care? Although sadly I do accept that there is a culture of Can?t be Arsed About Others in society and the selfish Me-First, Me-Only way of looking at the world. But that isn?t right. Someone said, garlic maybe, that it reminds us why we froth. Well I agree with that!

Glitterz - fab article, you are all round fabulous x

Knots - just got to your bit, I concur! Absolute bloody bollocks. We should be thinking about others, it is exactly our business and we should make it so.

Right, off to read OM?s housing post

madhairday · 17/01/2012 16:52

Just read this article on why Maria Miller's DLA-PiP claims are misleading

It's terrifying, particularly the part which refers to how the new PiP rules are actually even harsher than first thought.

eg 'For example, claimants who cannot walk more than 50 metres, but who do not use a wheelchair, will no longer be entitled to the enhanced (higher) rate of the mobility component, on those grounds alone. '

So those of us disabled enough to not be able to walk far (or some days at all) but not wheelchair users will lose mobility HR, therefore lose blue badge, mobility cars etc

Have I read this wrong? I'm too frothing to see it properly. It's going even further than I thought - yet this alongside wheelchair users losing the HR because they can 'get along ok on the flat?' Hmm

What is this all coming to?

Great article Glitter.

Hunty good to see you but Shock at your experience :(

Nilgiri · 17/01/2012 17:17

Maria Miller on the BBC today: "But disabilities minister Maria Miller said campaigners were wrong to suggest that DLA was being cut by 20%". BBC story

Maria Miller in the Commons, 18 Oct 2010: "One factor being considered in developing options for the new assessment is the need for reform of disability living allowance to deliver savings of 20% of working age expenditure." Hansard, column 452W

TeWihara · 17/01/2012 17:17

ammendments of the day!

Number 50zr: this requires the PIP assessor to collect evidence from the claimants' GP or other health care professional as part of the decision-making process; and

Number 50e: this requires ministers to set up an independent review of the PIP implementation, to set up a trial period before PIP starts, and ensure that "disabled persons organisations" are involved in the changes.

yummymummyreally · 17/01/2012 17:46

Hello all. Just caught up ..

Hunty... I am shocked by the treatment you received. I am incredibly lucky that I have little experience of disability; but that absolutely doesn't mean that I don't care how our society treats it's most vulnerable. I seem to remember there's a famous quote about what you can tell about a society by looking at this. I am appalled that you are in such a situation that you are fearful of complaining, and it makes me want to go charging out and shouting " what's happening to the world? "

I thought we lived in a place that protected it's vulnerable, that helped those in need. It appear that isn't always the case. Please post your story as a blog as garlic suggests. It's written so clearly.

Oh, and I am right in saying that the woman was basically saying you weren't allowed any company at all in your house as that might put your lone parent status in question? That is crazy! Are you not allowed friends?

Sorry... Off on one. So angry. Now I feel guilty for working too.

Mmlindor. An article about the loans stuff would be great. That really is an awful area of "taking advantage of the needy".

Stats update for toomanycuts.blogspot.com:

all time

7,195 Unique Visitors - all time (since 30th Nov 2011)
39,329 Pageviews - all time, in 11,901 Visits.

The average visitor looked at 3.30 Pages/Visit, spending 03:31 minutes on our site.

We have a 60/40 split between new/returning visitors, which is good as it means new people are reading us while a strong core are coming back.

past month

In the last month, which includes the holidays, we had 5,767 Unique Visitors.
They viewed 33,006 pages in 9,041 Visits.

Those figures include the amazing Tweet Frenzy Saturday, 17th December, which brought us 1,397 visits.

current

On ordinary days, we're getting about 75 Unique Visitors a day, viewing an average 1.83 Pages/Visit and spending 02:49 minutes with us.

Our bounce rate - people leaving as soon as they arrived - has gone up to 69.62%. That's a disappointment, but is probably inevitable with a high level of new visitors.

Our daily visitor count has halved since we first started. I'm not sure why that is, though it's very clear that social networking makes a huge difference.

content

The most visited pages of all time are:
Home Page - 26.55%
Workfare - 5.71%
[[http://toomanycuts.blogspot.com/p/what-are-frothers.html What are Frothers - 5.57%
Disabled Child - 2.68%

The top three have been the same throughout the blog's life, with one other post being top in different weeks. This week the other top post has been the House Of Lords.

I'm not sure how essential it is to try and raise traffic? We might just be in a January slump, or maybe we've reached a natural limit - it's too early to tell.

I do want to say that friends & relations whom I've forced invited to look at Too Many Cuts have all been impressed by the quality of our content! So well done, everybody :)
