WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Hunty its lovely to see you back on here but i am FUCKING APPALLED at what has happened to you lately. Got bloody angry reading that post.
I agree with the poster who said they can picture you and your family because you are very articulate in the way you write.
Anyone else think they didnt watch the back of Huntys house on purpose cos they didnt want to be proved wrong?

Hiya Glitter, what you're saying is what I've been stressing to my kids and friends on Arsebook. That if we cut services to the disabled we are storing up trouble for the future. It seems that the younger generation get it whilst people my age just don't. XW disappointed me by parroting the shite thrown around by the media, even when presented with the evidence. She is usually bloody clever (dumped me Grin) but on this she won't see sense. I shall write on my own blog tomorrow about this.

garlicfrother · 17/01/2012 01:15

It's no Leonardo, Glitter, but you might prefer it a bit? I've rearranged your coat & hair, and made it about half an hour earlier (or later if that was a morning).

You're right, all these ill-conceived cuts are doing is to store up worse problems for later - not much later at all, in fact: the safety net is so thin people will be falling through as soon as the cuts bite.

Glitterknickaz · 17/01/2012 08:02

Thanks Garlic.... that's not bad! Grin

MmeLindor. · 17/01/2012 08:02

Glitter
it is a bad photo, that is all. The one that Garlic photoshopped looks much better. It seems to be a hobby of newspapers, to choose the most unflattering photo.

We have the landlord coming in 30 mins to check the house, so won't be around much this morning.

This has been brewing for a while

You have no idea just how much of a difference your support makes x

TeWihara · 17/01/2012 09:42

great article glitter,

MmeLindor. · 17/01/2012 10:16

Phew. Landlord just left. He went through house with a fine toothcomb.

Hope it all went well, Mme.
Well... interesting comments ranging from saying I'm fat (which I am but that picture is horrendous) and my husband is a hairy biker (he is sans bike actually) to advocating vasectomy for my husband, birth control, why didn't we take personal responsibility.....

Well.... if I'd had a crystal ball things would have been different. As it is autism is not diagnosable in pregnancy or at birth. Soooo.... that wouldn't work then.

Glitterknickaz · 17/01/2012 11:24

Plus we were in work right up until Caitlin was a year old.

TeWihara · 17/01/2012 11:44

I know it's impossible - but don't take it to heart. I have come to the conclusion 99% of people who bother to comment on articles don't read them first, it's just anothe rexcuse to be an anonymous arsehole!

MmeLindor. · 17/01/2012 11:46

Oh, don't read the comments, love. There exists a certain type of person who comments on news reports.

Don't forget that they are getting a snapshot of your life. They don't know you, they don't know all the circumstances.

OP posts:
TeWihara · 17/01/2012 11:53

There are some good ones too:

"Come on, Toynbee, stop making excuses for them ! They have committed the greatest sin in tory eyes -they haven't managed, a la the casino bankers, to steal enough money to make themselves rich ! It's their own fault. They should know thievery pays very well - as long as you're a toff banker.."

MmeLindor. · 17/01/2012 11:55

Yes, had a look. There are much more supportive comments, and several have refuted the "treats" comments.

I am baffled by the 'extended familes would solve this' row also... I dunno about you glitter, but my extended family are not qualified in a range of helpful areas, salt, physio, therapist... nope. Can't see engineers being all that handy if I had a disabled child (unless I needed a custom made wheelchair!)

Glitterknickaz · 17/01/2012 12:10

My dad died when I was 8.
My mum and step dad work so their ability to help is reduced.
Both my husband's parents are dead.
Our siblings moved away for work.

What extended family?

I wouldn't let a lot of my extended family care for a gold fish let alone a child.

MmeLindor. · 17/01/2012 12:17

Extended families - are they going to give up their jobs to care for a disabled child then? Or do we expect the grandparents to do that?

There are some areas of life where experts are needed.

OP posts:
MmeLindor. · 17/01/2012 12:18

That is interesting, SGM.

I have noticed something similar on AIBU threads.

If someone says, "get a grip" within the first 5 answers, you can tell the thread is going to go downhill fast.

OP posts:
OpinionatedMum · 17/01/2012 12:18

I have noticed this on mumsnet threads. Also, as soon as one person makes an outrageous statement other knobheads soon pile in with their shitty opinions.

MmeLindor. · 17/01/2012 12:28

Yes, OM. It can be turned though, if another poster steps in and posts in support of the OP.

Glitter actually, I think you all look like regular people who others will easily relate to and wonder how they'd cope in your situation. They wouldn't do that as easily if you looked like Bradgelina Smile Girl done great

Glitterknickaz · 17/01/2012 12:39

Cheers. Shouldn't give my kids treats though eh?
Let's consign them to a life on benefits instead.
