WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Eleventh day panic. Can anyone suggest a post we could wrangle into eleven somethings?

MmeLindor. · 05/01/2012 19:40

SGM is going to do one, Garlic. Should be up soon, she was shark wrestling this afternoon.

About the Tory councillor who told single mum to wake up to "real life" after she asked him for advice about her rent rising from £950 to £1100.

This from a councillor living in a £540 church HA flat.

It was a yachtie person on the £100k thread. She/he called me fat, lazy and dumb.

I laughed in her face, tbh. She was ridiculous.

IslaDoit · 05/01/2012 20:41

Great blog post!

Gosh there are some ignorant people about the boards these days. Sorry you got one today MmeL.

yummymummyreally · 06/01/2012 07:44

great post for day 11... have commented.

Finding this thread tricky to keep up to date with! It gets full so quick. Is there any clever way I can get the computer to remember which of the 14 pages of posts I last reached!?

Loving the frothing. Am currently pulling together some reference links for piece on NHS funding. Should be able to finish it by tomorrow night if I hit it straight after the kids have gone to bed.

Right, off to throw clothes on for school run!

Fucking Gove Angry

I've just got this from the Richmond schools campaign (I've posted about this before - council supporting Catholic secondary school in a borough that is two full secondary schools short of places. The Catholic school will prioritise Catholics over resident children Angry).

Below is cut and pasted straight from the email
-------

Gove decision & consultation: We've just heard that "The Secretary of State for Education has granted permission to allow the Diocese of Westminster to propose the establishment of a voluntary aided Catholic Secondary School in Richmond upoon Thames". According to a Council press release: www.richmondinclusiveschools.org.uk/files/view/press-cuttings/Council_press_release_following_Gove_decision_-_6_Jan_2012.pdf , they plan to launch their promised consultation "later this month". The Diocese are also legally required to conduct their own consultation. Michael Gove has therefore chosen to ignore Vince Cable's request for a school with a "good proportion" of places set aside on a non-religious basis, as well as the factual errors in the Church's application.

But there's still a long way to go before the final decision on whether there will be a Voluntary Aided Catholic school at Clifden Road. And there's a lot we can do to influence it. The evidence is that most people are on our side. And the Council is politically more vulnerable than it was: following their recent decision on the Twickenham Station development, they are being accused of ignoring local wishes in just the same way as they accused their predecessors, and there's a Council by-election coming up in Twickenham Riverside Ward (which includes Clifden Road). So it will be crucial that opposition to their plans for an exclusive Catholic school is clearly and forcefully put during the consultation period. We'll need your help in making that happen.

Timing of Linked Schools decision: The Council are already running a consultation on whether to drop their "Linked Schools Policy" (closes 13th Jan). This has implications for the secondary school options for children from borough primaries, so we think they should wait until they have made a decision on Linked Schools before they expect people to respond to a consultation on the use of the Clifden Road site. Currently there's no indication that they will do so. If you haven't yet made an input, it's worth making that point - here's the link:
www.richmond.gov.uk/home/council_government_and_democracy/council/council_consultations/consultation_details.htm?id=C00870

New Briefing on Secondary School Plans: Towards the end of 2011, the Council gave details of their plan for secondary school places in the borough. They claim it will ensure more than adequate availability of places at good quality secondary schools to meet the need. Among other things, they're using it to justify using the Clifden Road site for the Catholic school. We think that the Council is taking a huge risk by basing their secondary school plans on some highly questionable assumptions, and have issued a Briefing to help people understand the issues:
www.richmondinclusiveschools.org.uk/files/view/risc-briefing-on-richmond-s-secondary-school-plans/RISC_BRIEFING_ON_RICHMOND'S_SECONDARY_SCHOOL_PLANS_-_28_Dec_2012.pdf

Free Schools: Two Free School proposals are competing for the Council's site in Oldfield Road in Hampton:
Maharishi School - a school with 2 forms of entry at primary and 3 at secondary level. They say they are not a faith school and will not apply any belief-based selection. Currently they're talking about a mix of distance-based selection and selection by ballot. But we are seeking their responses to some more detailed questions, for example, what happens if a pupil decides no longer to practice Transcendental Meditation. We are also not clear on RISC's other areas of interest: staff selection and promotion that does not take into account a person's beliefs, and a fair and balanced curriculum on religion and belief. But they do meet the primary RISC criterion of inclusive admissions.
Concerns expressed by some supporters about other aspects of the school and the beliefs associated with the TM movement are outside the scope of RISC. If you have a view on this, email Helen at [email protected].
St.Mary's Church of England Primary - a small, 1 form of entry primary school. It's encouraging to see that, although this would be a faith school, it would have no faith-based selection. It's tempting to think that RISC's pressure for all new schools in the borough to have inclusive admissions has been heard. And it certainly demonstrates that there is no incompatability between faith schools and inclusive admissions.

RBOTP has a blog post in drafts for today. And mighty fine it is too.

Boris is only saying this stuff because there's the mayoral elections next year. But let that not be a barrier to taking advantage of it any way Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/01/2012 16:03

Fucking Gove Angry Sad That right royally fucks me off. Don't agree with church schools anyway (no offence to anyone) but when an area is so desperately short on spaces compared to need, it's even worse.

I question BoJo's motives too, but am happy with his opposition. Feels wrong to agree with a Tory!

Yes it's ready, do I just press publish?

IslaDoit · 06/01/2012 16:08

"we are seeking their responses to some more detailed questions, for example, what happens if a pupil decides no longer to practice Transcendental Meditation" I think this very sensible question highlights for me one of the major issues with vanity projects free schools.

IslaDoit · 06/01/2012 16:12

Yup just hit publish RBOTP.

garlicfrother · 06/01/2012 16:26

My twitter account has been suspended.

I assume it was my very cross tweet about Brian Coleman.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/01/2012 16:32

I've published it but it doesn't look right at all - the formatting? It also says 1st January as the date which is when I think I put it in drafts? Can any admin person kindly have a little sorty? Thanks
